Yep I agree, as much as I love the originals it's time for something new. as long as the Blue danube is in there somewhere of course. ;)

Oh, so that's where it came from...

As someone who only played the original Elite on the BBC and BBC Master I just thought this was purely the theme for Chris Jarvis's Escape Velocity radio drama!

Actually I quite like the intro music that's currently on the alpha; starts with a human revolution vibe before dropping into something a bit like space marine - 2 good recent soundtracks imo :)
I like my music big and brassy for games, like the original bf1942 music.

Hoping we don't wind up with something too modern sounding, no dubstep please!
Oh dear, starting to sound like my dad:eek:

Either way, as long as the old classics like Baba Yaga are in, then I'll be happy enough

This should bring a tear to your eye:

I wouldnt mind this music introducing Elite: Dangerous.

Or what do you think?

It obviously brings (in my case) the memories and experiences of the past Frontier Games fairly sharply into focus, in a good way. :)

The rearrangement of the theme music by Jamie Treacher is an example of the quality that one would 'expect' for a modern day equivalent of the original theme, so if Frontier wanted to keep the title theme and bring it into the 'modern' Elite, then Jamie's creation is again, a good example of what people in general might expect. :)

The questions that I've just posed myself though are these...

Should the title music convey a link to previous games?...or would it be better to create 'new' title music to reflect the (intended) ambience of the forthcoming new game.?...*shrugs*...or a combination of old and new.
In any event, the question can be, and probably is, an important and even perhaps emotional one imho.

Jack :)

The current menu music in E: D really reminds me of the Fallout 3 main theme. :(

Not necessarily a bad thing as I really like that tune but still it is distracting sometimes.

Edit: After listening again the tunes aren't that similar it's more the scale and arrangement of the piece I think.:S

I know what you mean - I hear the slightest hints of the original Alien soundtrack and also bit of Bladerunner in there - a spacy noirish thing - but it's fleeting.

Anyway - I love what they've done with the sound so far and if it stays on this course I'll be very happy. New game, new music.

That's really good. Back in the day when me and my mates were minor C64 and Amiga demo writers i was into the coding and technical graphics stuff while my mates were more into the music side of things.

As they weren't backwards about being forwards they got in touch with most of the game composers and i had the pleasure of meeting some of the great names from the early days of UK based game industry composers at some of the London shows. Ben Daglish included, along with Tony Crowther (classic C64 game master), Jeron Tel, Rob Hubbard who we went to visit in his home studio in Newcastle and the legend that is Barry Leitch who came to stay for a while with us in our flat. Wild times. :):D

I would normally post Portsmouth Sinfonia in response to that, but I notice nobody has mentioned Jamie Treacher's excellent rearrangement of Frontier Elite II, so I'll post that instead and give you a break from this....doh!

Hey! Thanks ZeeWolf for the compliment and the link to my rearrangement!
Ooh, and Hamerstein too!
And Jumpin' Jack Flash!

Glad people are still liking my version of the old Elite 2 theme!

Thanks :)

I agree with Liqua, but I do really like this.

Sadly I don't.

It's a well written piece, but just reminds me of 8-bit music from an era gone by. There is no doubting that Jamie is talented by the way, it's just that times have changed and I no longer look back on those days.

Elite Dangerous deserves a modern twist - yes, a nod to the past but something new and exciting. I am pretty sure based upon the winning score from the Capital ship movie that it's going to be pretty special anyway.

I actually agree.
I think ED should be, and is, going in a new musical direction.
I'm afraid I don't really agree, however, that the original Elite 2 theme was well written!
For me at least it's main appeal is simply through nostalgia. I think musically it's rather bland. When I did my rearrangement I tried to give it some symphonic weight/complexity but probably wasn't entirely successful! I look at it as an interesting exercise, but from now on I reckon I'll stick to composing my own stuff!
But I'm glad some of you like it a bit! :)

I hope you don't mind that I arranged some Alpha footage to it. But I'm sure I won't be the last person to do this, especially when there is more game to put along with it.
