UA Mystery thread 4 - The Canonn

Some issues with "lets find the rare and/or test is at X"
1. We have hundreds of them - Anything is going to take some time
2. Carrying around that lot will attract a lot of interdictions, and it is too valuable to risk willy-nilly. IMHO, the "Where" tests can wait till we know "what"
3. For each "Test" we have to record, upload, download, analyse, report back
4. Seems only 1 person is currently able to analyse
5. We need AT LEAST 3 people coordinated on-line together
6. Each test is likely to take 30 mins or so with all the faffing around required, and all this time someone is juggling a live, viscous and illegal UA

A targeted binary search seems the most sensible (for the non programmers):
a. Split the load from Ship-A 50/50 with Ship-B, with our most likely targets in Ship-A (record what gets transferred)
b. Test Ship-A
c. If Still gives the signal, Go To a.
d. All cargo in Ship A is now marked as "pointless" - Maybe give it to Ship C to get it out of the way
d. Ship A and B swap names. Go To b.

With 128 Rares, should be done in 7 or so tests

I volunteer with my hauler for this. I just need a tad bit more money to fully spec it's cargo capacity

Just a thought for those testing rares that might speed the process up a little bit. Remove Soontill Relics from the cargo and see what happens. If still the same, then remove Ancient Artifacts. If still the same, then go the binary route.
Personally, I would have put Scientific Research (that I know they have), and SAP 8 (which I dont know about) above those 2, but whatever the testers think is most likely. Shortcutting a binary search is not a very good idea unless you are pretty damned confident that your shortcut is correct.

It's been a while since we talked about the Voyagers.

Here is a link to 19 sound clips from the golden record: https://m.soundcloud.com/nasa/sets/golden-record-sounds-of

One is Morse code :)

Anothe interesting fact about the Voyagers is that they have a guide star. A star that they always point to, if not othewise controlled from Earth.

Voyager 1 uses Alpha Centaury.

Voyager 2 uses Canopus.

Interesting, I didn't know about the guide stars. I tried searching for some info on what the guide stars are for and why those ones were chosen but had to give up and go write some code instead; deadlines are approaching. What I did find was a Haynes Manual for Voyager. :D I'll have to pick that up at some point.

*edit* grrrr quoting system not working for me

Join the mining CG in Kaushpoos (fast! It's ending!), mine 3 tons of Palladium, and take'em there. Easy millions. ;)
In my second account with a base Sidewinder, I made 20 Millions with very few hours of gameplay, just with those CGs.

I'm actually near Merope with an UA in my hold and 2 AFM almost fully loaded. Question is, is there any system where you would like me to test the UA behavior? Got a fully armed explorer so I could easily travel a few thousand LY before running out of self repair ammo.

I'm pretty confident the SAP-8 has nothing to do with the UA - it is the data crystal described in John Harper's And Here the Wheel. It is part of the Dark Wheel/CIEP/Raxxla story line(s) if anything. Forgot about the Scientific Research though - although without context not sure if I personally would place it above Soontill Relics. We know the Thargoids are looking for their supposed lost home world Soontill. If nothing else testing Relics would be another way of indicating that the UA has nothing to do with Thargoids. ;-)

I'm guessing it will be something rather mundane. It was beer that killed Listers mutated chicken vinadloo wasn't it?

Edit: Because of this I bet that 'Gerasian Gueuze Beer' is the magic potion :p

After TWO MONTHS of reading the WHOLE 4 threads I would like a cookie.....

NO! No cookies for you!

Have a biscuit, though... ;)

Cool! Rizal, have some biscuits after all that decoding :)

So now it needs to be done again and again and again with one less rare in the hold to find which rare makes the difference.

While weeping over that sisyphean task, let's consider what use this behaviour is.. How can this progress us in solving the mystery, how can we make it into a tool?
Or is it just a bug, something interrupting the intended behaviour so it reverts to pre 1.4 behaviour?

We could test it!
The collection can be split into 2 groups and then each group tested to see if there is difference. If one group is found to be causing the UA to behave differently then split the group and repeat the test until possibilities are narrowed down.

Yes, please, I was about to scream "divide and conquer"

I've been working on a project behind the scenes

I'd just like to point out that I hold YOU responsible for Bond Hub falling to pieces. Is it a coincidence that the problems started soon after our self-appointed (self-anointed) janitor took a leave of absence? I think not!

(On a side note, this ridiculous thread made me look up the etymology of the word "janitor" - quite interesting, actually, and with some mythological connections as well.)

I'm in merope right now just sitting and waiting for doing a test though I can do other tests if they don't require me to go far.

Ifi iyou want we can meet in Merope. If your ship is well equipped we could try to steal some scientific research from the medical transports.

Did anyone tried taking "Scientific Research" (found in Medical Convoy in SSS) to Christian Dock?
There are pretty darn rare. Need a wing to get one, and I only know of 1 saved for science.
Not sure if the Black Market is available to interact with the game (sell it)
