News Sneak Peek - Illegal racing in an installation

Awesome stuff. Didn't expect a sneak peek this week.

About the fourth time I watched it, I turned my gaze to the horizon. I notice that there is a lot of haze in the sky near the horizon. Also there is volumetric fog on all the lights, including the SRV lights, that we haven't seen on other worlds.
Given that there is no atmosphere, can you comment on what's causing this? I really hope that it isn't an artistic choice, given how much effort has been put into making these worlds scientifically accurate.

Other than it being very nice - the other thing that struck me is the lack of people or vehicles. You'd think there would be construction vehicles moving around or people in space suits...

It seems very lifeless.

You could say the same about the stations/outposts. I'd like to think in the future there'll be little detailed bits of activity added into both. Robots shuffling around, cargo carriers loading/unloading your ship. Repair crews fixing things around the pad etc.

I am impressed at the detail here though, I was a little worried they'd be very open and basic, but there's a lot of up-close detail and obstacles too.

I'd still like to see how driving (at speed) and shooting works, it's something we've not really seen. I'd still guess it's going to be fairly difficult. I suppose in just 5 or 6 sleeps we'll find out!

Edit - I also really like the surface colour. I assume different metal & mineral compositions will result in varied tints on the surface. It does add some well-needed colour to otherwise drab, dreary gray (but realistic!) environment. In fact, we could do with more colour being added to the buildings: scientific, reflective white science labs, engineering/safety yellow for machinery etc.

I just got a flash of a couple dozen cmdr's doing a mad max style race across some desert plains.
...cool stuff!

Looks like great fun. Base looks awesome. I still think planet surface (textures) could look better though. Also... Tire tracks?

This might explain it: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=197842

Here's another unedited video taken from Elite Dangerous: Horizons. Again, many things here are unfinished which I won't call out. This shows another slow zoom, but this time showing the effect of volatiles forming as a mist in a deep crater on a cold, rocky, uninhabited world:

Maybe. Could be outgassing, or could be volcanism (I know volcanism isn't supposed to be in 2.0). It looks like windborne dust, though. Maybe widespread outgassing could cause that, but...I don't know.

This is why I'd like some sampling sensors in the SRV. What is the sand made of, what is the outgassing comprised of? What are the components of the ice? That's the gameplay I want with the SRV. Going to strange places and figuring out what makes them tick...
Please?

IIRC they will be more like Outposts than the Coriolis or Orbis. So, more PG and more variety.

Still my guess is FD won't spice them up with input from the background sim as much as they could. Like state of war, poverty, famine, and colors and banners based on affiliation and local factions and local product billboards and such. Hopefully that is on the roadmap or wish-list somewhere.

Yes to the "nth" degree - How cool would it be to see damage in war torn areas etc. Please make this happen in the not so distance future. Also if first person comes in and we have NPC's wondering around in famine areas begging for food etc. I'm so stoked with how the development is going. I may attempt to cryo freeze myself to season 5!

Haha yeah!!!!!

I've been asking for racing and here it is! but please when you get killed program in game over yeah at the rebuy screen!!

Lat/long? Perhaps relative to your ship I don't know?

And gravity level, 3.0g? Not sure it would be split though, 3.0g / 3.0g?

Also if it is gravity is this why the thrusters are pointing down throughout the video, to counteract the high gravity?

I do wonder perhaps if we will get some atmospheric planets after all. In the initial announcement for season one they chose their words very carefully saying "airless" worlds, of course an atmosphere isn't necessarily air.

Airless worlds means worlds without a biosphere/ecosystem or weather system, which would need modelling. So yes, there will be dust, there will be gasses, there will be faint dusty atmospheres but nothing dense enough to support weather or life.

Now stop harshing our buzz and enjoy the pretty pictures.

Not harshing the buzz at all. If there is some leeway to the "airless worlds" limitation, I'm going to do backflips with joy.

Well I'm going to try to do backflips
Well, I'm going to try to do one backflip...and probably hurt myself.

I'm just going to go "squee!" but really, really loud!

Looks great! Only problem I see so far is those skimmers don't seem to pose any threat at all. Looks like you can just ignore them...

Well, not much is really dangerous in this game you know LOL... however great racing track.

Excellent driving guys.

Does anyone know if David knows Geoff Crammond?

I would really like to find the "Geoff Crammond Memorial Stunt Car track" on a low gravity moon somewhere around.
