News Sneak Peek - Europa from orbit

Looking really good!

Just one question if that's OK. Last night as I was flicking through Facebook, I saw a post advertising Elite, and there's a really really nice picture showing some geysers. Will these sorts of things be in the initial release?

The patch lighting seems to be a little buggy. Like when we were presented with the first demo vids of planets up close.

I really can't wait to land my ships though. It's gonna be EPIC!

Thank you for the sneak peek David. And once again, Thank you to the dev team for all you're hard work. Its definitely paying off, Its looking fantastic. I cannot wait.

Nice video Mr Braben, Thanks.
Exciting times ahead :)
I have next Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday off for Xmas shopping with the wife so hopefully I'll be able to grab a few extra hours beta testing ;)

The atmosphere in passenger ships will be epic

:p

Smuggling people onto planets. "We will not stop, just deccelerate slightly. Please get ready to jump. The red light means the cargo hold is opening. Good luck and don't forget to wire the payment, or I WILL be back".

No, but they have said that active volcanism is planned sometime during the next season.

Such a tease! Every seconds of the video I was "Come on David, fly closer to the surface! Do align a lot more the planet in front of the cockpit!" :)

Ok, terrain patches are quite visible sometimes, but I can totally live with it because the whole planetary expansion really looks awesome and seamless. Really looking forward to experience the whole orbital cruise/reentry/flying/landing/SRV driving procedure.

I'm more than ever ready to test the beta by restarting my character \o/

This reminds me of something:
Since Horizons was announced, I was thinking Frontier (or the OP) could recreate the "Earthrise" photo taken during the Apollo missions with a screen capture from an SRV.
It would be a lot of fun to compare them.
At the very least, I'm putting this on my to-do list for the Horizons beta.

Come to think of it: the earthscape is the Frontier logo. A clip of an SRV bombing around and looking up at the Earth could be a hell of a game launch teaser.

I'm planning to do the same thing. My signature is the best i could do sofar :)
No need for a SRV i think BTW, the Earthrise pic was taken from orbit

One day, a cloud city above a gas giant would be cool though (although unrealistic)...
Why unrealistic? There are plans for cloud cities above Venus already, gas giants wouldn't be much of a stretch (considering the differences in astronautics of E: D & today).

Please ensure your tray-tables are stowed and your seats are in the up-right position. Looking out to the left, you can see the crater caused by the previous flight-crew.

Looking good, lets burn that GPU shall we? should I add water cooling to it :p

Fair enough, wasn't sure if those would come under the volcanism category but it makes sense now I've had a couple of cups of coffee of course.

Actually, if the volcanism stuff is going to include all kinds of chasms spouting fountains of lava, water gushing up miles into the sky like in the picture, huge active volcanoes etc its going to be pretty spectacular in itself. So much stuff! :)

Which implies that you're still in supercruise in orbital cruise but closer and slower thanks to the "Planetary Approach Suite". This begs the question: "Can you be interdicted from Orbital Cruise?"

That sir is a very good question.

Is it a new feature that the HUD body indicators (the "parentheses" around planets/stations etc) are now dotted lines if the body is obscured? Nice feature if so, saves you ploughing into a planet/star while trying to reach something behind it.

I certainly hope they add this for all nav targets and not just POIs on planets.

I believe at this point the planet is already loaded! I guess he could just fly in if he wanted. The only thing that keeps loading are textures.
