UA Mystery thread 4 - The Canonn

The simple answer is that I missed it. The progression of story is primarily through things that we check via the server. I keep an eye on here as well to see what is being discussed as well, but that's not my primary source of information. I'm not going to comment on false avenues as that's for the player's to explore, but when I realised that you were following one that was because of a bug I let you know.

Michael

The problem with this Michael, as was pointed out by Derthek, is that we got an official "answer" about a bug which deliberately led us down the false lead rabbit hole. I don't mind going down it on my own, or with the connivance of other players, but when we are just strung along for no purpose by FD employees (or in the good old days, Kerrash or Drew) for their seeming amusement or deliberately to stretch out the story for no return, that is where I call [redacted]. Like we were with the reply from support for the "missing" Voyagers when it was submitted as a bug, and as we were with Zac's response here. Not cool, as Derthek says.

Oh please, spare me the false outrage. There is an ignore list if you don't like it. Or, you could exercise your own judgement and not read things and just go play. I'll just leave this here also.

There's no need to ignore anyone in any way if we keep it civil, without losing the scope of all of this: playing.
People do mistakes, everyday, every time. Being grown up and having children helps a lot to understand it :D

I'm not really sure what else I can say - the mistake was mine, we'll try not to let it happen again, but to err is human.

Stations must be cured with comodities. Materals can't be sold.

I think we first find the material combo that stop UA damage to ships, then we find the same stuff in comodities.

Mmm, think that "Stations must be cured with commodities" may be an assumption. I understand that materials can't be sold which makes them unlikely to be a cure for the UA corrosion, but what I was asking was are there any new commodities introduced in 1.5/2.0 that may be a cure?

There may be other ways to a solution- If we work on the hypothesis that the UAs are one of the larval stages of the new Space Barnacles, which could answer the blue "spores" they emit which seem to have wings and a tail as being the next phase of larval growth (these then feeding on metals in the ships/stations to cause the corrosion), then we should look at biofouling of ships on Earth.

Wikipediahttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biofouling#Anti-foulingsays (with some paraphrasing...“bio-dispersantscan be used to control biofouling. In less controlled environments, organisms are killed or repelled with coatings using biocides, thermal treatments or pulses of energy. Nontoxic mechanicalstrategies that prevent organisms from attaching include choosing amaterial or coating with a slippery surface, creation of an ultra-lowfouling surface, or creation of nanoscale surface topologies similarto the skin of sharks and dolphins which only offer poor anchorpoints....

Biocides are chemicalsubstances that can deter or kill the microorganisms responsible forbiofouling...anti-foulings are tin-based, chlorine-based,copper-based (hence the term 'copper-bottomed ships').... Non-toxic anti-stickingcoatings prevent attachment of microorganisms thus negating the useof biocides. These coatings (e.g. fluoropolymers and siliconecoatings) are usually based on organic polymers, which allowresearchers to add additional functions too, such as antimicrobialactivity. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is another antifoulant. Energybased methods...plasma pulse technology has been shown to beeffective against zebra mussels and works by stunning or killing theorganisms with microsecond duration energizing of the water with highvoltage electricity, or initiating bursts of ultrasonic waves throughthe hull. Regimens to periodically use heat to treat exchangerequipment and pipes have been successfully used to remove musselsfrom power plant cooling systems using water at 105 °F (40 °C) for30 minutes.

That seems to give us several possible routes to explore to address the corrosion problem.

Ok, I'm not happy with the Palin stuff but if the story is scripted that way so be it. Would have liked to see a competetive CG for a Canonn base though. Science race and all.

But to get back to tinfoil hattery:
The way I see it we have two story arcs now. Heading headlessly around Merope trying to find something or looking for a cure for those stations.

We see more and more stations being "infected". We tried commodities and rares. Has somebody already checked to see if there are observable changes to the station itself?
Also have people tested the new Onionhead Alpha Strain? With it being narcotics and assuming the UA is a lifeform perhaps it could halt the problem. We could also ask the Hutton truckers if they would be willing to organize a convoy just for this.

The other possibility that I have in mind is worsening the infection. We see those stations having technical problems being more or less a cold. I once had a chronical tonsilitis that I had to take medication for almost 6 months. Shortly before they agreed to operate on them i had to stop taking meds that the tonsils swell up a bit more. What if we cannot yet see something big happening with the stations because the infection first has to get worse to locate it? What if those UAs will form a colony once we supplied enough?

Also has somebody checked Jaques for Barnacles? A station travelling around the galaxy is probably not cleaned as often as those we have anchored.

Tinfoil-hattery achieved. Thank you.

So people please, tell me in which other Company of every kind, the Executive Producer replies to a customer, admitting a mistake.
On Mars perhaps, not on Earth.

Again, thanks MB, we really appreciate your effort. That is.

Stuff to do, things to find, places to go.
Fly safe Cmdrs, but fly, just dont spend your time talking.

But what am I supposed to do when I am at work then?

While I don't agree with exactly what's been said here (esp bits directed at MB), I do agree with the sentiment.

I'm about ready to just drop everything related to UAs and just "do something else", which is hard, but while I can't prove a "general case", I've at least proven to myself that *I* have zero agency in the events playing out before us, and with that in mind it's kinda pointless for me to try and pursue anything in regards to the UA. Palin's CG is frankly just the icing on the cake for me. To date:

- My article to announce the morse discovery was ignored (yes, I did relate it to Patreus which probably wasn't great, but lets face it, as a Patreus pledge and a major contributor to the morse discovery, why wouldn't I do that?)
- Despite overwhelming evidence that UA's are the cause of station failures, my covert run of 200 UAs to a single station achieved nothing.
- My overt announcement of where I sold the 200 UA's achieved nothing
- My CG to collect 10,000-200,000 UAs, while acknowledged as received (Thanks Zac A :) ), has not resulted in anything further.

What annoys me the most about Palin's CG is that this is a scientist who, given how quickly he seems to be moving around, is a rather small entity. I consider Sitakapa Empire League to be an "affiliate" minor faction of the Sitakapan Expeditionary Forces (My faction). Together they own two systems, 8 stations, and have holdings in half a dozen other systems. SEF is the ruling body, and is a morally ambiguous dictatorship. They have the resources and mentality (and since I'm central to the SEF, the ambition) to research UAs through a CG. They'd happily risk civilian lives to achieve this, and would put down dissenters. But instead, nope, lets cart shelters back and forth for a snailpace scientist.

I kinda saw this coming waaaay back when Community news and Player Factions were first mentioned. This didn't sound like agency to carve out your own story, it just sounded a bit like a popularity contest. I imagine FD must be looking at my suggestions in the same way I looked at some friends I dungeon-mastered for. I presented an elaborate mechanical device which they needed to "figure out" in order to get a key and proceed. For the purposes of the scenario and maintaining "canon", it was not a magical device. I put a lot of thought and effort into how they could interact with this thing, but what I didn't think of was their warrior going hulk-smash on the device, pick the key up and use it. But I let them, because in other scenarios I had been presented similar suggestions and "pretended they weren't serious" and tried to hint them towards the "proper way forward", and this very quickly lead to them being disenfranchised with the story I was telling, and their agency in it.

FD have clearly intended to demonstrate these things are dangerous. What I get the feeling they didn't anticipate was players wanting to face that danger head-on and do dangerous things with them, whether it's out of game with CG/galnet submissions, or in-game literally transporting incredibly dangerous amounts of these goods intentionally. This is clearly not popular with FD's vision of this story, and that's fine, it's fundamentally their game to do with what they will, but ignoring these specific going-ons basically strips me of any agency in this plot whatsoever... and I'd rather not participate in something where my participation or lack thereof achieves the same outcome.

I hope someone in staff reads this, not so they run back going "Oh sorry Jmanis, we were wrong, have your CGs and Galnet articles", but to just realise that if you're going to tell an interactive story, you need to allow interactions with it.

At least we can turn Slaves into Master Chef's though...

Out of rep, as usual. I also have a non-UA Plan B that has kicked off, but I am not going to tell anyone about it because I have my own theory and I don't want Rizal to be first if I share it, for a change. I did tell Erimus, but I know that a) he can keep a secret and b) is headed in completely the wrong direction... ;-)

I'm done with the UA, and my time with ED is on life support. Ciao. So long and thanks for all the fish.

what happened while I was gone ?! Did Michael just apologize? But why ?

I'm not the only one out here busting my hump for the CG am I?

I'd rather be out exploring new worlds, but I feel someone should give the man what he needs, right?

The profit margin is almost nothing, but it covers your fuel. Plus: I've picked up 3 different smuggling missions worth 2 million a piece
from the station I'm buying from. Makes it pretty damn fun.

Also on a UA and CG sabbatical, Currently running rank missions in Imperial space, got the credits for a cutter but one rank short !
Did some missions last night, ranking seems to work I we went up 2% for about an hours work (5 missions), so will be hitting it hard over the weekend to move up from Marquis

Like Zac did.

Oh please, spare me the false apologist moral outrage. I don't, and never have (deliberately in any case) pretended to speak for others. What others read into my comments is their own problem. There is an ignore list if you don't like it. Or, you could exercise your own judgement and not read things and just go play (and even ignore the UA from now on, as I will be doing, if I play at all - saw a nice seamless planetary landing on a planet with an atmosphere the other day). I'll just leave this here also.

The mods will come in soon enough and strip a whole bunch of posts out of this thread in a second, no doubt - but before they do...

Last thing I'll say on this subject - it's not false outrage.

More and more new people coming into this now looking for good natured, light hearted cooperative banter, and they come along to find people kicking sand in everyone's eyes because of their outrage at an innocent mistake that was owned up to by the person in question... Honestly, how childish.

I have an aversion to irrational, ignorant cynicism, and while I could choose to add people to my ignore list, instead I choose to express my opinion to the contrary.

Personally insulting the development team, even via smart-alec '[redacted]' elements is out of order, and I will be vocal in dissociating myself from it, because I fundamentally disagree with it.

Equally, further insults at the rest of us (not from you, no) for 'sticking with FD' will not be taken by all in the off-hand way it's meant. Some will be personally offended - and no one person has the right to go around making others feel bad just because they're annoyed.

I believe I am in the majority in feeling this way. If not, then I'm sure people will say so.

Yeah - feel the rage; feel frustrated or whatever, but this forum is not a sounding board for everyone's inner dialogue. Sometimes it's best for everyone else if you just take a step back and keep it to yourself.

Right then. So I've been thinking - and given that this is not a natural state of affairs for this correspondent you really should pay attention - that this here UA mystery-wotsit is turning into something of a farce.
Good old Frontier bless 'em, have laboured long into the wee small hours, burning no doubt copious quantities of that there midnight oil to bring us this, their fabulous vision of the galaxy in 330 - whatever the hell it is. And jolly glad we are that they bothered, too! Certainly I am. And that's from the perspective of a sad Muppet with the lack of foresight to have set off sooner and who now finds himself thrashing about in the black, miles from anywhere much, and trillions of miles from anywhere in particular. Who was it that said that A.I.'s had the capacity to be more intelligent than man?
Where was I?
Oh yes. The UA thingy.
Look people, the sad fact is that on the possibly erroneous assumption that Merope now stands centre stage, we nevertheless have a problem to wit: it's humungously, fantasmagorically gigantic.
I'd as lief search for a particular and singular flea on a specific rat in the depths of the Amazon rainforest back on Earth, back in the 21st Century - and I'd stand more chance of success, too!
Of course it doesn't help that certain members of the Frontier Development team- who am I trying to kid, that Michael Brookes - Executive Producer no less!- chooses occasionally to wade in with his size nines and 'help'. Muddy the waters still further that is.
So anyway, for those of you who have had the good grace (and not a little patience) to stick with me so far: this 'mystery' is effectively STALLED!
You read that right: STALLED.
Sure, sure, somebody might just stumble onto something, might just come up with something new, but honestly? If Frontier (are you reading this mister Brookes?) don't throw us a bone here, we might as well give up on this stuff and go back to our 'day jobs'. Me, I was having a nice career being a rather successful trader/explorer thank you very much.
To specifics on the mystery hunt: signal sources, signal sources, signal sources. To date they have been the only 'mechanic' that has gleaned us anything in the way of new data. GalNet? Schmalnet! Palin? Pah!
Frontier Michael Brookes, stop yanking our collective chain. Put up or shut up.
I think you have the right to be angry silent :) ... We're pretty much stuck ! I've been trying to tell you guys as well : how on ... Well I was gonna say earth but I'm gonna say merope for sarcasm , so how on merope are we supposed to find clues for the ua mystery on 12 1:1 scale moons that only have materials and skimmers or canisters of tea or coffee or gold or escape pods on them ? Unless you guys at frontier put us on a right direction we're pretty much stuck circling on the moons of merope ... And don't think I'm just saying that ... Since horizons came out I have driven 500 km on my srv on the moons of merope ( which was very fun ) and started to realize I'm just wasting my time ... Everybody has been searching for clues and more specific the temple of doom you guys have shown on the trailer ... And the result was nothing ! ... Don't get me wrong guys ! I love the fact that you guys at frontier have come up with the UA story and it's an awesome way of telling it but come one guys ... We want to solve this mystery and head on to the others ! Like Polaris and star ship one and the missing just like mr Brookes mentioned but if you guys don't give us clues or content on the UA more people will just lose their hope and just get back to what they did before just like silent mentioned . I hope you read this and understand how many people want to solve this mystery and then you start helping us
