I bought Horizons and I'm happy with it.
I also look forward to the improvements and additional content I hope are on the way, but I'm happy with Horizons for the same reason I'm happy with Elite: Dangerous: I've gotten over 100 hours out of the base game, and expect to get another 100 at least out of Horizons.
I've spent $120 on the game (total). $120 divided by 200 hours would be $0.60 per hour of entertainment. That value absolutely trumps anything else in the entertainment industry. Books, movies, and music are all more expensive to purchase, when considered from the perspective of how long they entertain me. I'm about to drop $15 or more to go see Star Wars, a movie that will last ~2 hours (haven't seen actual run time). That's $7.50+/hour of entertainment. Therefore, the entire Elite: Dangerous and Horizons purchase of $120 is actually a better value than the cost of going to see Star Wars, when considering how much entertainment I'm getting out of it.
Would you spend 60 cents to be entertained for an hour?
I would but entertainment is a subjective valuation.
I purchased beta access to ED at £50 and have probably only played about 3 hours because I wasn't particularly entertained,
So by the same subjective metric I have paid about $25 ph for something that didn't entertain me.
To use the logic of your allegory, I could watch someone who is politically correct try to make a nuanced argument and be entertained for hours for no fee at all making politically correct people far better entertainment value then elite Dangerous.
Truth is subjective appraisals of what is value and what is not only make sense to people of a similar mindset and in that sense we are both preaching to the converted and falling on deaf ears so it doesn't advance things at all.
Bottom line is Frontier and the game will live or die by people voting with their wallets.
If enough people feel as you there will be no need to worry about the opinions of people like me, but also the reverse is true.
It is nigh on impossible to make a game that caters to everyone's tastes and whims for sure but I do feel there is a strong undercurrent of opinion that frontier need to make the game more engaging with content adding depth and continuity/persistence while making the dynamic aspects more conspicuous so that we feel we are a part on the world and what we do reflects upon that world and changes it even in small ways.
