UA Mystery thread 4 - The Canonn

Weyn definitely did have a black market - but I don't think it was listed on the databases.

*Every* station that's got malfunctions and has then been shut down had a black market. No exceptions. Promise.

thanks for the clarification :) I can't get in game over Christmas so i'm relying on internet resources, well in that case yes every station that had malfunctions has a commodities market as well as a black market, so the fact that Walkers Survey has no commodities market may well have been the reason why it didn't malfunction.
Perhaps this is intentional, as a way to fix the stations could end up requiring shipping a certain commodity there later on. maybe the CM's will be the first bit to re-open in shut down stations or something. This could be a hint to how to fix stations? I wouldn't mind betting it ends up being the Meta-Alloys, upgrade the station using that and it ceases to be affected by the UA's.

Experiment "Staring contest" result

Idea: drop UA from SRV and observe it for 5-10 hours.
System: Merope
Planet: 2d
Observation time: 7:30:20 (start: 9am).
Observation from: Imperial Clipper

RESULT: UA spins and says planet name for 7hours - NOTHING.

Thanks for replying!
I don't know... it's really a yellow/brown bubble very round, and it should be closer than California, because I was not seeing it, when I was far away. Should be very small.
I'll try to target the nebulas you told me, to see if they match. Shame I didn't take a picture, but I will. News will follow later.
Thanks!

PS:
I found this very interesting collection image of all the nebulas here:

I repeat my post frpm 19th December:
I asked earlier if there were new commodoties in 2.0 & wondered if any of those could have use as an antifouling to combat the (alleged?) UA corrosion effect on ships/stations. Of Derthek's list of new commodities several look promising (see Wikipedia on Antifouling): Thorium is radioactive, SyntheticReagents could be nasty, Thallium salts are highly poisonous & historically used in rat poison/insecticides, Cryolite is used as an insecticide & pesticide, BootlegLiquor (seem to remember the blurb says it can be poisonous) , NerveAgents, & potentially muon scanners if they emite energy that would affect the UA infection (alleged barnacle larvae?) Anyone willing to try these? I'm still light years away.

Ok, probably totally nonsense and just an inattention from the devs, but... maybe not?

I'm currently doing the CG for Palin, already delivered a few thousand of these evacuation shelters, when I just thought "What the hell does Palin want to do with all these shelters?"
I mean, he is actually demanding millions of these things, for a small science outpost! Does this make any sense?

Sooo.. what if Palin is not the good guy here, maybe he is even controlled by Thargoids? And they need all these shelters for some kind of construction.
Maybe each shelter will bring one Thargoid to us and the CG is just a trap?
Has anyone tried to "combine" a shelter with an UA?
Do i just need some more sleep? or less?

Yep - totally agree, this lack of commodities market on JManis' station is intriguing and I wouldn't mind betting it's a bug (in a SQL query or similar) based on that that stopped it from going down.

You never know, we might just be lucky enough for MB to come in and confirm that *cough* :)

I looted "scientific research" from a hostage rescue mission yesterday,
sold that stuff at Ray Gateway in Diaguandari.
It is quite the expensive stuff 120k gal. avg.

The flavour text states, that it is "the type of research that can lead to breakthroughs".

I just wanted to remind everyone that there was a galnet article in which palin's lab was attacked by intruders trying to destroy his work.
Maybe these attackers were part of a larger group who are now hacking stations to remove research data causing shutdowns.

This would mean that as a station gets more UA's and starts to discover things about them it then gets attacked by this group.
If we monitored the npc traffic at affected stations to see if same npc's arrived there just before station shutdown.

Thanks for replying! Unfortunately, it's not, I've targeted it yesterday without success.

I think MB is on holidays: I'm not seeing posts from him in the last few days ;)

It's FD fooling us :D

Yes, this could be a good reason for the shutdowns. The fact is that they try to repair but malfunctions keep occurring. Mostly like some kind of Virus....

What?? That's new. Scientific Research used to only net a couple hundred credits, and had a more mundane description. Did you sell it? Coz i'd love to see a screenie.

Im all excited about finding the Antares !

Did some CG work ... and tried to reconstruct the projected route of the Antares ... I am not really sure what its final destination was ... I wanted it to be a Tourism world ... but the only ones that seemed close were Mari, LHS 3167, and CD-45 12902
They didn't strike me as Maiden Voyage worthy ( you would think the route would be a matter of historic record ... but things seem to have gotten lost) .... I used to think SOL was the destination ... but the debris field points a different direction ... Thoughts anyone ?

Firstly thanks for this, have some rep.

Secondly, could this mean that using the same type of size of cone that we could extrapolate from SS1's last known heading and narrow down the list of systems to be searched?

I have a question for the experienced explorers here:

I'm halfway between Merope and California Nebula, still inside the UA spawning shell, and I'm seeing a nice small light brown bubble round nebula in the sky, I'm not able to locate on the GalMap. I remember finding it in the past, but I don't remember the name.
Could anyone be so kind to tell me its name? I'd like to pay a visit...
Thanks!

Might be a planetary nebula, those are not visible in galmap until you're around a hundred LY away from it.
You have to be careful while exploring, looking for those colorful bubbles in the sky as they are usually visible from more than a couple hundred LYs...
They are small in the distance, yet perfectly recognizable if you know what you are searching.
My best guess is to head in that general direction until you can see it in the GalMap and plot your course towards it ;)

Runcible Shaw:

I believe it was Shriver Platform on the Ovid system (a planet-side base). I didn't realise that I'd hit an exciting thing until about 15 mins after accepting the mission, hence the lack of certainty.

I didn't record the rank requirements, but my ranks were Expert/Merchant/Pioneer, so those are the upper limit on the mission's CMDR rank requirements. I don't have any special relationship with the local factions, but I but am allied with the Alliance and (IIRC) Federation and friendly with the Empire.

Good info. Thanks.

Nice mammoth test anyway.
Did you listen to the UA by floating above it? Dropped feom SRV it makes a very interesting noise

Well, I was not going to make a full report ...

UA dropped (from SRV) into the recess in the surface (so it would not roll away). I parked ship so that UA was visible and turned on the headlights.

Seven hours of recording and university.

UA is in the same place. Quick review of the recording - nothing. Took pieces of the sound of every hour - same.

My rough and unscientific conclusion: No matter how long it lays - nothing.

I would like someone to repeat this experiment, so we would not miss anything important in the case of me being complete idiot and missing something (like not checking the incoming messages).

I'm not the first to suggest this...

Palin means well, apart from choosing to keep research etc to himself - story-wise (meta: exactly what could be shared with us anyway? We did get the snippet about the UA being able to beam navigation data over vast distances) - his aims are largely aligned with that of the Canonn (and others who are interested in this mystery, don't forget, it's not exclusively 'ours' (eh JManis? ;) )

He even has suggested that we are too 'gung-ho' in our own investigations (the sly comment about not being 'aligned' with us).

He's the in-house agent for change - and we follow on his coattails. I can see life getting very interesting for Palin in the future, but not because he's 'the bad guy' - but because he's a well-meaning scientist that might make a mistake.

I wouldn't be surprised if he gets assassinated at some point, but only if/once the story is in such a place where he's no longer needed.

I'm hoping for more angles for us to carve out too :)

Should we demand to lower tier goals for CGs?
Take Antares Wreckage CG:
mn1210222015-00001.jpg
There's already 440 commanders who on average brought 32 canisters each. That's about 7 visits to wreckage signal, scooping all 2-6 containers each time, spending about 45 minutes to do so.
Why make CG about grinding challenge? The goal meter to first tier haven't even appeared yet!

MB is aware it seems https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=187372&page=439&p=3314123&viewfull=1#post3314123

Also, just got more Scientific Research from a med transport, averaged only 430cr again. Would love to see the screenshot of the other "research"
