UA Mystery thread 4 - The Canonn

Has anyone else experience a UA sounding "slower" than normal? I'm heading back into the bubble to swap ships before heading back towards merope, and stopped at the first system I saw an SSS in. Popped in and all the audio sounds like it's around 75% of the normal speed. Not sure if this has been noted already, or a potential bug. Noticed it as I was swooping around and the whale call happened, immediately noticed it sounded a lot deeper/longer than usual. I'll grab some video now, and post it up if anyone thinks it's worth it. I can't really place it to be sure, but it all sounds different than "normal".

I'm going to guess that you were moving away from the UA when it howled.
The audio has a Doppler Effect so it sounds higher and sped up as you approach, sounds lower and slowed down when moving away.
Think of the sound of an ambulance siren as it approaches you, then how it changes as it passes you and moves away from you.

The SRV have a extra 'container protection system' which automatically wraps and protects the containers on ejection in vintage tinfoil hats and biscuits, hence protecting it from the degradation and gamma rays.

You sir are my hero. Have some rep.

What is strange is, from what I've read, the UA degrades when ejected from the ship on the planet but not when ejected from the SRV. I should probably go grab one and eject it and do a bug report and see if we get the "working as intended" or if they should degrade either way.

Tinfoil time.
The UA degrading after ejected from a ship has always been strange behavior. If they were traffic cones they shouldn't degrade. If they were probes from a hostile species they could be much more lethal rather then slowly sapping power. I mean one good detonation in the cargo hold = no more ship. Its almost as if the UA starts feeding and then starts to starve when it immediately is released again, some sort of irreversible process kicks in. I do question if its energy it truly feeds on or the metal (cough, alloy) of the ship. It does cause modules to degrade rather then just temporarily draining power from them, I'm inclined to believe the station side power outages are from the UA damaging essential power systems rather then draining energy. Anything is possible though.
<Puts tinfoil aside>

Oh and merry christmas, holidays, etc :D

Re 'no degradation'.
I assume it's part of the normal SRV behaviour and the current design.

FD Design choice:
* containers ejected from ships / in space: Degrade because of 'container spam' in space. Some players ejected mass-amounts of containers, hence there were some restrictions added to these. See older alpha / beta / gamma discussion on the container spam abuse.
* containers ejected from SRV / on ground: Not subject to the same restrictions as in space/from ships.

Interesting fact Merope is a unique star it has it's own nebula The Merope Nebula also known as Tempel's Nebula and NGC 1435.
It appears Merope crashed into a supernova remnant and kept it, no other star has this.

There's a black hole close to SagA* that also has its own nebula. Can't remember the system designation off hand, but I could probably look it if you want. If you look at it from the galaxy map, it's a tiny nebula that's barely larger than the system. I believe I took this shot from inside the system:

After the heavy fish pollution situation in the Aulin region last year, SPAPOL (Space Pollution convention) demanded that all ships fited with cargo racks must have a vacuum triggered, time delayed canister destuction device.

SRVs are not subject to SPAPOL approval and is therfore not required to fit this equipment.

PS. I might have made this story up.

Little Update on Antares Search

I compiled an unscientific and exhausting but not exhaustive list of salvageable wrecks in the CG named systems.
Was hoping to see pattern to to the wrecks or to the drop rate ... didn't really pan out
I poped in and out the instances to get a feel for the drop rates
All the Drop rates were Good (5 canisters every time) except for those in Luyten 205 (which were lower)

Alpha Centauri Lagrange
Luhman 16 A2
WISE 0855-0714 1A
Epsilon Indi New Africa
Talta B2
Talta B3
Wise 1639-6847 2A
Rigga A1
Luyten 205-128 - poor drop rate (mostly got npcs)
Luyten 205-128 3 - mediocre drop rate (varied 5,3,2)

Im thinking the poor droprate at Luyten 205 is because it has a wreck by the main star and probably the quickest one to get to (probably the most used by commanders)

Luyten 205 and Talta were the only systems I found 2 wrecks in .. but i could have easily missed some.

Would be really interested if anyone has found Antares Wreckage in systems not identified by the CG

How are you defining "Antares Wreckage"? I found a site that looked exactly like one of those listed in the CG yesterday, but it was around 500ly away from the CG. Maybe more. I'm not sure of the system name but it was either around the pipe/bowl region or another area around there.

Does the UA damage the SRV like it does the ship? If not, I think it's likely that the UA is joining with a component on the ship that doesn't exist on the SRV. When that connection is broken, the UA degrades. While in the SRV it doesn't make that connection, so it isn't broken.

UAs damages SRVs.
Cargo degradation and toxic corrotion are probably not related.

An UA will act the same way as a regular toxic waste container in all situations.

For you who just want to watch videos because it's slow ingame right now, just a 4 min clip of inspecting one of the wrecks during the search for Antares.
Nothing special really, just a short scientific study of the physics.

That's interesting as well. Any chance that shot was outside the system as one of those stars is not like the others, looks like it has a cloud.
I dont think it matters though unless we find barnacles in Merope.

This isn't necessarily the most apt of locations for this post. However as more of the contributors hereto will have an inkling as to the referents, it's going in here anyway. Mods: feel free to move, amend, edit or otherwise deal as you see fit. Oh, and Merry Christmas to one and all :)
So ladies and gentlemen:
It is highly unlikely that this post will ever see the light of day. Unfortunately in this age of political correctness, the dissenting voice is, erm - frowned upon.
Some background. Recently, yours truly was banned from these here forums on the - not unreasonable - grounds that I was shall we say, disrespectful to one of Frontier's employees.
Which is fine. It's not for you or I to decide what is or isn't acceptable on the forum. As the saying is (and I fully respect): their Forum, their rules.
The problem is the masking of a deeper malais.
Our esteemed leader the mighty Braben, and his epic team of dedicated coders have provided us with some of the most fabulous gameplay ever seen on any platform anywhere in the history of videogames. Most notably with the release of Horizons, the seamless transition from supercruise through orbital cruise and on down into planetary landing is an achievement, in my most humble of opinions, without parallel in the history of gaming graphics. Without delving into the hows, whys, and wherefores, it seems to me that the 'flight mechanic' is flawless. The ships? Fantastic, and each with a definite character of their own.
For myself, an 84'er, Oh Boy! And here I am already with over 1000 hrs under my belt.
Now, let's get critical.
Where's the game? Microsoft's Flight Simulator is fantastic.
But dull.
See where I'm going here?
It's the same: MSFS in space.
The XP Mr Brookes said recently in a post (under the name of our beloved Ed Lewis), that the Power play contained 'subtleties that were not immediately apparent'. Okay then: Make them apparent. The 'Mikun' boys and girls have been trying to figure out the BGS pretty much from the get-go. And still aren't sure how it all works.
Hey Michael! This is a GAME. Help us to play.
As for storylines...
Get this: the player base would rather like to feel they have some form of 'agency' in the development of storylines.
Apparently, based on all data available to this respondent: they do not.
I was recently a little abrasive in a post. Michael Brookes! My name is Mike Rhind and I'm from Gloucestershire, England. I am sorry if you were offended by my post. I would say that I am sorry for the post itself, but offensive language apart, I stand by the sentiment.
Stop taking us for fools and give us something other than a grindfest CG. Hint a little on GalNet. It doesn't have to overt. It doesn't have to be easy. it doesn't have to be obvious.
Unfortunately I genuinely do not believe you have what it takes. Which makes me very, very, sad.
I deleted my game and reset my save in the aftermath of the rage I felt following my last posts(s), but guess what: I'm still here and still playing because I honestly have never found anything approaching the satisfaction to be found playing this game.
But the UA story?
Blows.
Hard.
'Moderate' this post if you must.
But understand it is sent out there in the spirit of furthering the mystery, energising the playerbase, and above all, exhalting the developers to live up to our (high) expectations.
FYI this is my last post.
Ban me if you want: I won't notice or care.
But you should.

Mike Rhind

Wow, that's really cool that the debris landed on the planet!

iirc, that star was where the balck hole was.

Sorry, now that I think about it, that was the wrong image. The first one is from the system closest to the black hole/nebula. The second two are of the black hole inside its own nebula and an icy asteroid inside the same system:

Yes. If this is a military equipment designation scheme then I would expect osme of the subsequent numbers to denote the modification date (version number) so the first 3 numbers could indeed be a date; but not sure what the others would represent as they are too high for dates (assuming we aren't going for a starlog numbering scheme!).

On the other hand maybe its a code, or coordinate scheme?

Well, in line with the coordinate scheme line of thought, those numbered signs in the picture look like they are above what could be some kind of storage compartments. So it's possible they contain/used to contain some kind of salvage that was found in space, and that the numbers themselves correspond to the galactic coordinates for the location of each of the found objects.

Of course, this is wild speculation as much as anything else that's been said on this subject. Sometimes I imagine MB sipping a cup of tea and reading these posts while shaking his head and saying to himself: "Oh for f@*%s sake people! They are RANDOM NUMBERS! We just put them there because we thought they looked cool!".

Or MB is sitting there going "haha they are random numbers spend as much time as you like trying to unravel them Mwahahaha" whilst stroking a white cat.

I'm out for a bit so Merry Christmas! Be back in a couple of days!

Laters Eagle have fun.
