Well, lets see...
I'm a hardcore gamer, PvP games usually, 20 years now of that online. Doom, Doom 2, which don't really count as online per se since that was in the days of direct modem to modem connections, followed by Descent and then real online gaming with MechWarrior 2 and Quake. Followed by Quake 2, Unreal, Tribes and so on, up to Battlefield and Call of Duty games, mainly PC but some console(CoD, Destiny, BF3/4). I also played the original Elite when I was in college in the mid/late 80s, along with Bards Tale and many other games, and various MUDs and such on BBS's back in the late 80s and early 90s. I've also spent countless hours playing MMOs like UO, EQ, WoW, and so on, because I enjoy MORE than just PvP, sometimes a good story is a nice change of pace, so there's games like The Witcher series and the like.
I love Elite because I can do whatever the hell I feel like doing whenever I feel like doing it. Exploration is my main thing really, I spend time in the bubble doing missions and hauling freight around to afford to be able to spend a few months at a time out in the Black. I was fully aware that this game wasn't a PvP game before I bought it, I'm good with that, I've got PvP games galore, so that's not a big deal. I CAN PvP in Elite if I want, I've done it, it's ok but it's not a PvP designed game, so there's little attraction there for me.
I'm a dad and a granddad, my grandson just got Elite Dangerous from me along with an XBOne to play it on(was going to get him a PC, saw what he was looking at on my daughter's laptop, kid got an XBOne and no more access to the laptop). I'm going to be reaching out to some of the PvP groups to see if they can take him under their wing and teach the kid how to play the game as PvP is something he likes. He knows that Elite isn't designed for PvP, he's watched me play it quite a bit, understands why it's not a great PvP game, probably because he's watched me and his dad play so many PvP games, we're both extremely competitive and belong to top ranked groups. He still wants to do it, mainly because he wants to be a pirate like his grandpa, makes me so proud
So, I'm not really sure what you were going for with the original post, because quite a few of us old timers are also hardcore PvPers, we just don't see much point in doing that in Elite Dangerous as it's literally not designed for it, it's simply not prohibited. We happen to like MORE than just PvP, look on any real hardcore gamer's PC or console, you'll find more than just PvP games almost without fail, and Elite Dangerous gives us that something else we crave in a video game.
