UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 5 - The Canonn

I think I've got space madness I was driving in merope 2c in a crater and I'm pretty sure I saw green lights 6 or 7 times but when I reached there it was just an illusion and there were only rocks and pure darkness , and now I've stopped playing to take a break and now I'm having a mental breakdown ( it's partly because of barnacles so don't judge me ) .
Where are they ? Why are they impossible to find ?!!!! :(

Some rocks do reflect ambient and artificial lights. You may have been seeing that.

Sigh.

It just doesn't seem to add up.

I mean even if we somehow got the Pleiades links there's something like 10 Earth sizes planets to cover, surely the chances of finding anything are astronomical.

UAs don't start spouting lat/longs when on a planet or something?

It didn't give any odd sound, only gave the morse of the planet name.
I really think we should at least check the magnetic poles of the planets. As we were told some POIs were hand placed...If only I made a note on where I've been so far...

MB confirmed (after a day I think it was?) That they do currently spawn in this version.

Either they A: Physically checked a known location of them (as MB said that some have been placed at specific locations) or B: They have checked the POI Instancing Rotation (or whatever is used) and confirmed that Barnacles have a change to appear in certain circumstances.

I definitely wouldn't rule out there being some new behaviour of the UA we haven't spotted yet.

And like I say, I think there might an in-space clue to look for, too.

I've heard these sounds in my ASP before, back in sept/oct 2015, while just hovering in space (not on surface).
It may have been near a black hole. I do recall how it spooked me out when I had my engines off.
Not heard it with my anaconda, may be ship specific environmental sounds.

I think all he said was "meta-alloys are in the game".

Q: FD - Are Meta-Alloys bugged?

It's on the front page now :) all the things MB has said are there to be referenced.

Only MB knows the answer to that right now.

Yeah, I'm just going by the delay between the 'I'll get it checked' and the 'yes, you can find them' (sic) messages. Looking at code to confirm that something should happen is not the same as confirming it does happen.

It was likely a QA member being asked to re-test the scenario IMHO. Probably didn't take a full day of searching, either.

Also, I doubt they'd have just checked a persistent site - because that's far less likely to be bugged (beyond the odd behaviour seen where a previously found wreck then disappeared and reappeared) - I would expect them to have verified the random one(s).

If I'm right about all of that, then I suggest there is a very specific place (possibly a planet, or specific type of terrain on a particular planet) in which these random spawns occur.

All supposition, of course - I've been on the HobNobs tonight and the McVities is strong.

I've seen two videos now where those noises occur on a planet in Merope. Very strange sounds, many I've never heard before, even near black holes. I can't help but wonder what relevance they have, if any.

I've been searching on Merope 1A today and have found nothing of interest. No weird noises, no barnacles, no biscuits. And so the search continues :D

Lol, this whole time I thought that MB said Barnacles could be found in the game, not meta alloys.

So is it even confirmed that Barnacles can be located yet?

What he really confirmed here is the meta alloys. Yes the description says they are associated usually with features called large barnacles... But who is to say we won't find them any other way. Recall that UAs had to be taken out of convoys at first. Maybe one canister out of 15000 tea canister has them in the myriad of POI spawns. The actual barnacles may be in the persistent POIs and those only FD knows where they are for now. Perhaps focusing on the barnacle part exclusively is the wrong way to go. I found that hovering with your nose 20 meters from canisters lets your ship ID them, also learned that I can smash sentry drones with my ship which is fun so I'm changing how I do things hopefully this will yield a positive result.

If a hacker successfully managed to decode the necessary binaries, assuming those files had all the logic/parameters required stored within, then said hacker would have everything they needed to find them - no halfway houses.

The binary (elitedangerous64.exe) is compiled from C and/or C++. The information that you want from a decompile it is lost on compilation [as it is provided to us]. You can 'decompile' it to ASM, but without method names, etc., it is extremely difficult to understand. On top of that, the information about POIs and so on will be coming from a server, so the placement of POIs wouldn't be present in the game files regardless.

Too bad this game wasn't written in C#! At any rate, unless the poster is FDev, you can ignore these types of comments.
