UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 5 - The Canonn

Fog plus it's got high edges and loads of mountains inside (it's that big) so there's lots of shadows, and it's also incredible jagged terrain inside. I spent ages in there because I was convinced if you were going to hide something it would be there but got frustrated with how long it took to get anywhere both in and out of my ship.
So, this planet is a good candidate for hiding something onto it!

OMG I left this thread this morning at 190ish pages! I think we will never find any barnacle untill we are focused on the threadnought XD

*turns on ED client*

you'll know when the barnacles will be found when you come back and its like 500 pages behind....

ALSO, i sugest if we find the barnies... we shouldn't put it in here, because those ASH holes in the Maia sis can think it's a good ideia to attack us while we are trying to give info to the other explorers....

Exploring Maia B 4 f my SRV suddenly exploded with 80% hull. Bug? Or... thargoids?

Anyway it scared the crap out of me lol

That was a Tactical Heavy Armed Remote Gunned Over Instantiated Dispositive (THARGOID), more caution next time.

I know the pulsing noise you're referring to. I first heard it while experimenting with a UA on Merope 1 A iirc. Just recording sound and it was early on in my experiments so I didn't pay much mind to it. After figuring out that was the only time I heard such a noise I went back to the same spot but couldn't find anything.

I think there might be something to this pulsing noise.

EDIT: whoops, not the post I intended to reply to, but somewhat relevant at least
It's fine, he didn't respond to my question.

Someone on the subreddit was talking about 'clicking' noises, but I along with many others think this person is only hearing the proximity sound effects.

I've been searching the Pleiades Nebula for days now (~25 hrs in game time) and I haven't found any evidence that the Large Barnacles exist. I've searched many different environments: hot/cold, moons/planets, day/night, tidally locked, geologically active, low-g/high-g, mountain tops, craters, valleys, canyons... I haven't found ANYTHING remarkable. Just the usual stuff, mesosiderites, bronzite chondrites, occupied escape pods, crashed ships, cans of gold and tea, outposts with datapoints and without... BUT NO BARNACLE SIGN! I've been following the mega thread too, even though it is filled with mostly negative results, useless conjecture and wild speculation,

I'm devastated after investing so much time in the process and it's all been for naught.

The 'Information' and 'Hints' given by Michael Brooks are totally worthless and have an almost taunt-like quality to them. Let's examine some of his statements.
You are guaranteed to find them if you are in the right location.
Let's see here, so we've been assured through the GalNet post that the planets in the Pleaides Nebula should be examined. Thus, the Pleiades Nebula is the right location and after an exhaustive search I have not found a Large Barnacle. So you're guarantee is BROKEN.

I think you'll notice if one is nearby.
So after hitting dozens of planetary surfaces, driving hundreds of kilometers in the SRV, flying countless megameters at low altitude, I have not noticed anything out of the ordinary. If I haven't noticed one, that means I haven't been nearby one. To look for so long, with such care, and to not even get close is positively MADDENING.

And to those asking why nebulae - it's quite logical if you think about it :)
OMG YOUR SMILEY MAKES ME RAGE. The audacity, to suggest we have enough information from a few tautologies, koans, and the most barebones GalNet post. There is no way we've been given enough of a lead or clue to logically derive the location of one of these large barnacles. We don't know crap about them beyond that A.)they exist B.) they are on a planetary surface in a nebular environ, C.)they may resemble in appearance a barnacle.

I'm starting to think this is just a big joke on the players. Maybe the devs were mad because immediately following the horizons release nobody spent much time on planets, so they initiate this wild goose chase as a way to force people down planetside.

By the way, if this planetary exploration and barnacle hunt has showed me anything, it's how underdeveloped the planet stuff is.

Sufafce Map? What a freakin' joke, a transparent mesh that looks very much identical between every planet/moon (except for outposts/bases, which there is exactly ONE in the whole Pleiades Nebula region)
Geology? Pfffffffthh. I've looked at planets that are supposed to have 'geysers' or 'magma' for volcanism... Never have I seen a single active geyser on the surface. No volcanoes, no cryovolcanoes, no lava, just the same static features across every surface, only difference is gravity and color.
SRV? OH MAN, anybody remember how horrible it was to drive the mako around in Mass Effect 1? This is just as bad if not much worse. All the jouncing even at low speeds makes me ill. The damn SRV can only hold 2 cargo items, so that means multiple trips to the ship if you discover anything of note.
Ship Recall? LAND ON A LEVEL SURFACE YOU DOPEY AUTOPILOT PIECE OF CRAP. At least park in a position that I can board in. I've had to dismiss and re-recall the ship to get it in an accessible position more times than not.

BLARHHGGGG PLEASE KILL ME SO I CAN STOP LOOKING FOR THE PHANTOM BARNACLES!??!?

You do realize that you DON'T have to point straight up to engage Supercruise? You only need 40-45 degrees up and be travelling the same way you're facing. Maybe that's why you flipped straight down.

I doubt that's the actual reason why. I do it regularly. The same thing could be said about going at a 45 degree angle, "you don't have to go at a 40 to 45 degree angle" but yeah, that planet has bugs.. and we're not talking barnacles, though.. barnacles could be there :).

Some things that go through my mind:
What makes Merope in greek mythology special?
it's the only one of the seven who married a human (sisyphos)

what if MB thinks about other seven sisters?
There are other sisters, the hyades, maybe we just look at the wrong ones?

If you had to speculate, what would trigger these RNG spawns? I understand that they'll spawn very rarely, but what parameter needs to be triggered for a spawn to occur? Time-lapse?

In my experience, they only ever appear:
- when you enter the required altitude range (1.5km -> 3+ km?).
- when moving about the planet on a ship while within that range.

They may actually be generated in advance when you enter the instance (either by dropping out of orbital cruise, or logging back following a logout on/above the planet) and only shown on the two triggers above, it's hard to know. Based on the density of POIs I've seen, I find it hard to believe they generate all of the planet's POIs at once when you enter the instance, but maybe they do.

While stationary in the required altitude range, I've never seen a POI suddenly appear. Obviously that's anecdotal evidence, but I'd be surprised if it were a time-based trigger. It'd be enormously unsatisfying if you left your ship hovering there, and a POI suddenly appeared underneath you and it contained the barnacle. If correct, it shouldn't matter whether you play one 24 hour session or 24 1-hour sessions, you'll have an equal chance of finding them.

More than likely the RNG is invoked on the above two triggers, with a very, very low threshold for a barnacle POI. I think the only option you have of improving your odds with these types of POIs is investigating as many as possible, unfortunately.

(Edit - I'm talking about the blue-circle POIs here, by the way. We can't be certain that the RNG POIs or the manually placed ones have the blue halos, nor do we know for certain if the RNG POIs are persistent once generated).

Hey Guys

I just wanted to say thank you for all the congratulations thrown my way since I was dragged onto the council. I truly believe The Canonn has so much to contribute to the entire galaxy and I am always proud to call myself a member.

As my first decree I would like to implement a forum post tax. I think we can all agree that the threads are growing very very fast and I reckon the only way to stop this is to charge the princely sum of One Chocolate Bourbon per post. We will be counting each post made from this post forward and expect to receive your Chocolate Bourbons at the end of each month. This shall henceforth be known as the “Biccy Tax”

On a serious note though, if you have an idea, any idea that may work well for The Canonn then don’t be scared to give me a nice PMing. Anything from Canonn Events to website requests and on to The Biscuit Olympics. Even if the idea seems like a stupid one, it may very well spark an idea that no one else thought of! So P your Ms into my Inbox and keep your eyes peeled for BARNACLES !!

On a side note, I am surprised no one has tried Rick rolling the UAs yet……

For quite a while after Horizons came out I was completely ignorant that you could locate POI's via the blue circle thing from the ship, so I would just fly to a landable body, pick a spot, land, and then go out on very long explorations in my SRV. I would occasionally find things that would be classed as POIs. Therefore, it's not necessary to be in a ship to spawn a POI.
