UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 5 - The Canonn

I can confirm reports of the missing content... after a couple hours in solo zooming around in the buggy back and forth across the coordinates for both Anaconda wreck & barnacles (and smashing my ship into a mountain for 75% hull damage - ouch!) I logged to the main menu & tried Private Groups - no go. Then popped into open & I was literally right next to it (at least not on top of it).

This was pretty discouraging - I usually give FD some leeway in stuff, but this was a joy- and game-breaker. Particularly having avidly followed this thread and the research & out to see my first barnacle; having found the Anaconda, I had to log for the night :( maybe tomorrow.

I wonder if this issue may be related in some way to system configuration. I've seen multiple reports of known Barnacle and Fixed POI sites not spawning for people outside of Open, but I've been playing in solo and private groups to avoid the pvpers (running low on funds at the moment), and I haven't had any issues with the known POI's not spawning for me. In my experience, if an issue effects certain people and not others, chances are it has to do with system configuration. It's a little odd that this would be such a situation - you wouldn't think differences in hardware or software setup could be responsible for sites not spawning, but this is procedural content we're talking about - so anything is possible when it comes to glitches.

Do any of you guys see progress on the Meta Alloys CG? I accepted it out of curiosity to track its progress (I don't believe in shooting things which I know little about), but I don't see any progress on the bars, only an amount in tonnes. Is this because I am not actually participating, or do you see no progress on the bar as well?

It's moving very slowly - there's a little sliver of a bar at the bottom as opposed to when it started when there was nothing. I get the feeling in order to get that bar to grow, we're going to have to commit xenogenocide on these organic structures. I'm not sure I'm comfortable with that. Generally speaking, murderous rampages don't go over too well in diplomacy. I guess we'll see.

I delivered 8t to the CG and landed in top 30%. I think we will only see progress once the tier 1 has been met. IDK what the threshold is. (Excuse my ramblings if tier 1 has been met yet.)

If anyone is giving you guys grief, I'll be happy to give them some grief back. I've got an A spec'd Python rigged as a gunship sitting on Merope 5C right now. Feel free to send a friend request to Cmdr. Alma Frohock in-game. I'll provide security services where I can. I even have a Fuel Limpet transfer controller and have quite a few limpets if anyone needs any fuel.

Wish I'd known that last night after a couple of griefers chased me away (and shot me down):( told them I only wanted screenies of the thing, they said they were 'protecting' it... but 1 of them had landed and was using an SRV to mine at it

Hey ho solo for my screenies

If it bleeds, we can kill it. Uh, does it happen to bleed?

I wish you guys on the CG the best of luck and hope Dr. Arcanonn doesn't go running off to the Caymans with the materials.

I like to think there's some kind of sap inside those organic structures. They sound like trees when they break. That's kinda like blood. Tree blood.

Would love to come to Merope again but its crawling with griefers atm...got shot down in planetary orbit deliberately with no warning or anything...just sad really.

Do they only show at certain times of day or are they just buggy as crap. Played earlier today, went to 3 sites and the crashed anaconda. All were there with no issue. Even reloaded the instance a few times and got 12 tons of meta-alloys. Now I can't see any. Restarted the whole game a couple times, reloaded instances. Tried landing away from them, reloading the game and flying back to the sites but they just aren't there.

How are we supposed to do the community goal if the game is so damn buggy? Getting fed up with this stuff.

You should join the Mobius group Sir.
Plenty of us there on Merope yesterday, it's a non pvp group, strictly pve.

Has anyone thought of the idea that your current rank in the meta alloy CG is also giving you an "alien hate" score? When we meet them, they kill us according to that, don't participate, and they ignore you, top 5% are on the most wanted list. The UA's were sending pictures of our ships after all. And the rank we reach as a community will determine how the aliens react to us? We reach 0/8 it's friendly talks, 8/8 all out war.

WHAT DO WE NEED NOW:

We need more recordings of the barnacle sounds! A lot more! So please commanders, the CANONN needs your help! We need you to get to a barnacle, get in your debug camera, get it INSIDE the main barnacle and record the sound. Each record should include:

1) How many ships are nearby the barnacle site.
2) How many spikes were destroyed, if any.
3) If anyone has just shot the main barnacle.

PLEASE COMMANDERS, WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Count me in. I listened them for so long testing different audio visualisation tools.

0) Missed the inside/debug cam thing. Wanted to look on fuel gauge. now i know better
1) I did it inside my SRV with no Ship in Solo Mode.
2) None
3) No, and not in the sky :)

i do it again with debug cam

Any idea of how to avoid sounds made by friends online/offline messages? EDIT: Ahh the debug cam.

this is my recording from Pleione 11A (2.3°/177.2°)
at begin and end of file you can hear menu sounds. just ignore them. file is long enough. 37min at 6x

EDIT: Any idea of how long we should record?

All this talk of the barbaric immorality of this CG seems pretty silly to me. For one thing, there's a key difference between the consequences of killing UAs vs barnacles: UAs are clearly either sentient themselves or are the property of someone who created them for some purpose. We know this because they actively respond to their circumstances or environment. The barnacles are completely unresponsive to any stimulus, and are essentially just passively accumulating minerals.
Also we can't even kill one if we want to. It's ethically equivalent to a CG to pick apples or something.

Dr Arc is unimpeachable, I can assure you.

Except when it comes to biscuits: never shares and always steals from the shared science stash...

We are going to have to work *really hard* to complete this CG - it needs huge support to get anywhere near done.

Which makes me think, as it did another CMDR yesterday, that it's absolutely crucial we do complete it. The easy option is to do nothing and play the 'wait and see' game on the station malfunctions.

Hypothetical: imagine a weapon capable of inflicting the same kind of damage that the UA appears to be dishing out. If MAs are a defence, and a station has been laced with them as a result of Palin's work, then it's safe. If not, then it could be very bad indeed...

Yes, no doubt the owners of the MAs are going to be miffed when they discover they've been mined. But this is survival we're talking about.

If we knew for sure that it was an act of war, then Dr Arc would advise against it - but would still be trying to find a way to get these things studied and understood. That's science.

Can't speak for Palin, of course - I have a feeling that Dr Arc's assistant, Socha Korbemile, has been playing for both sides ;)

Absolutely - or join the Canonn and get in our PG. No preference at all - if you're already a member of Mobius, then get stuck in!

@ Rizal...

Any chance you can point me in the direction of the pre-ship morse recordings from the UAs and attempts to figure them out?

Cheers m8.

Just letting you guys know that there was an ass in a cutter blowing ships up whilst your in the scarab, lost my conda that way, good thing I was insured

Is there a guide somewhere for finding new barnacle locations? I've found the material linked on page 1, I am more interested in finding them elsewhere. Any clues on planet types, surface features to check, good flying height?

I understand that if we keep looking in places that are alike to places we have found them before (templerature, surface discoloration) we won't discover too much really new information. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure I'm doing something wrong. I have spent some time flying above planets in several nebulas, crashed my ship once and am now beginning to feel frustrated. There is so much surface area around that I guess barnacles will have to amount to hundreds of millions, or be statistically bunched in relatively small landforms, to be findable at all.

So overall I really am interested in actually finding something, even if I have to go back to the pleiades and will probably re-discover some location that someone else has found already.

*URGENT REQUEST*

I need the morse translations for all ships...

BUT with mistakes included! (No letter guessing)

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Cheers!:)
