Distant Worlds - A journey beyond the Abyss

I'd like to scout for materials in advance as well. How do I become a rock rat so I can find out the systems we're next meeting in?

Rock-Rats are not something you have to sign up for. Maybe it just describes a style of prospecting, that has evolved during DW: Follow the 3,2,1-rule and find the respective materials. If lots of jumponim-mats are found, contribute to Akiras Thread. Do it in wings to get faster results. Meet others to prospect with in the Discord-prospectors-channel or in the Teamspeak-Prospectors-channel to organize wings.

Nothing like Distant Worlds has been done before. You cannot expect to get things right the first time and experience will show how it can be improved. So people are naturally making suggestions when they have different needs. They are not expecting everyone to do as they do (which has been erroneously suggested is the case).

Personally I'm fine with the trip being organised how ever the organisers want, just don't expect me to hang around and it would be remiss of me not to explain why.

What I do object to though is the repeated suggestion that everyone that is not naturally catered with the current set up is somehow a whiner, the equivalent of a cheater and an exploration hog. These are people who want to contribute and derogatory and subjective opinions are being expressed against them. I am trying to point out that this is not conducive to a harmonious fleet.

I've made my case though and I'm not going to push it. But please, let's just stop the perjorative language here. It's not helping anyone.

I have to do most of my flying at the weekend, so I head off early and am not around for departure events. I am at WPs for fleet arrival later in the week though. Even though I set off a bit early I don't need specific waypoints. Can get a good idea of where to head from the DW map. Not a prospector though.

The rock rats don't have any more knowledge than any one else - and if they do, its out of date. Only myself and FD are up to date on specific WP systems. Even the info DrKaii has is out of date as some of the BCs I originally scouted in beta have changed since they've become unsuitable for this expedition. The world BC 7 is on was changed just yesterday for example due to unforeseen circumstances. There are a lot of reasons why BCs won't be revealed too early and people need to accept it and just get on with enjoying the experience so far.

Waypoint 8 details will be posted after 6 and 7. If you need to go ahead, you're probably better off skipping some WPs to Sag A* if you can't hang around and wait for the rest of us.

I myself might be in trouble with regards to time to play over the next 2 months, hence why I might have to go my own way(in terms of when and how to procedd with DW)

BUT !!!! I totally disagree with your post above, If I continue on DW in my own time, to have felt like I did it like the rest of you I will be going to all the waypoints, and if they have still to be revealed by your good self, I will still go to the area in each waypoint, then on to the next. :)

I might get there before or after all of you, but I will get there

So whining can be objectively measured can it and you're just stating it as being so as fact?

I don't even care about the way points myself.

Depends on the definition of whining, the way I was using it was in the form of malcontent, or discontent. The way I see it people are not happy, therefore discontent. In hindsight I could have used a better word, such as complaining, bit that too would appear negative. The facts as I was stating them is that pre DW everyone was discussing builds, now it is waypoints, racing to Beagle point etc.

If you only have a limited amount of time to play due to other commitments such as kids/family, work, school, dogs, shopping, holidays, cutting the grass (mowing the lawn), tidying the house etc. and need to know waypoints in advance and scoot away ahead to get there then you do not have enough time to be involved in DW. End of discussion in my eyes. It clearly stated at the start "The Distant Worlds Expedition is open to all who have the endurance and time to commit to this deep space journey."

so, apologies if I sound a tad bitey here, but if you do not have the endurance or the time to commit to the way the organisers have organised DW, the expedition isn't even open to you.

It was also on the sign up thread too, in bold orange text, just above the bit that stated, "don't sign up if you can't commit". But... meh:D

I must have missed the bit where people were saying they were no longer committed, rather than suggesting that they be allowed to discuss the way the expedition is going without people having a go at them.

Distant Worlds - compensating for the lack of combat with the Battle of the Boost, the Jump Range Jostle, the Skype Skirmish, the Discord Discord, the Flyby Fights and the Waypoint Wars. (Coming up: The Quasar Quarrel, the Rendezvous Point Rhubarb and the Barnacle Beef.)

Voluntary Close Quarters Counseling is available in the main menu.

Does anybody remember "Alpha Centauri", one of the follow ups to Civ? A long journey with a lot of like minded people, by the time they arrived there were five factions ready to kill each other.......

Most people were wanting way points in advance because they were making far faster progress than the main fleet.

Personally I don't see a need to exclude anyone from Distant Worlds unless they are a griefer. Why set a completely arbitrary rate that we should be exploring? Over a thousand commanders signed up, there will be enough people around at whatever rate you decide to go at.

This mission started with Kaii and Erimus agreeing to journey to Beagle's Point. Others were invited to join them and I for one am grateful they did.
This is their mission, not our mission. We are lucky to have been invited to participate.
Nothing more needs to be added.

Well tough. Just be patient. Or go and "blaze your own trail." The point of DW is to do it as a team and I think that is why so many people signed up, so they can experience the game with loads of other players and see things they can't see while playing on their own like being able to hover 10ft off the ground while 8 SRVs drift round them all flashing their lights, to go exploring canyons and giant craters with people all communicating and sharing data and comms and just having fun. For anyone "making far faster progress than the main fleet", you have the final waypoint, Beagles Point. Just go there and wait for 10 weeks and shut up.

*Sigh*

This is exactly what I am referring to in terms of tone. I don't think you'll find that you'll be very successful in herding cats and criticising them or cajoling them won't make any difference.

Let's just recognise that people have different priorities, different levels of commitment and spare time and accept that.

This is an internet forum.

Attempting to educate and elucidate people in your perceived definition of an acceptable 'tone' of speech is a non-starter I'm afraid :)
