UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 6 - The Canonn

By the way I made a 1.5 hours recording (4k) of a barnacle and timelapsed it into around 5 minutes. No sound (but music). Maybe helpful for research? The raw video has streamchatter in the background, so not much help for sounds unfortanitly, but if needed I could do it again. Just let me know @maeyae42 (twitter)

Good time lapse ! For those short of time, there is an excellent sequence as day transforms to night starting from about 2:50. :)

I just realized that there is a merope nebula with the id NGC 1435 that exists in the real world.
(small but bright reflection nebula with a bright spot with id IC349 ~3500AU/1.7M ls from the star).

I wonder if that's a coincidence or actually usefull information.

Finally, all these UA's and barnacles make me think of von Neumann probes a lot.

Two questions occur after getting myself up-to-date on recent developments in this thread:
1) Would it be worth trying for a meta-alloys CG to deliver some to Varati in order for the Canonn to take the lead in UA research after Palin's disappearance? This might help to move the storyline on - at least in terms of finding a cure for the 'technological plague', regardless of the origin of the Barnacles and UAs.
2) Has anyone checked the Coal Sack for signs of a UA shell / Barnacles? For some reason, I keep thinking about the possibility of a link to Regor Sector and this is, I think, the nearest to that locked-off region.
.
I have checked the Phipoea Nebula and the 'G2 DUST CLOUD' for signs of a UA shell but no luck (although I wouldn't consider my findings definitive). I only briefly made landfall in the G2 area and didn't search for Barnacles but I've covered some ground prospecting in the Phipoea Nebula and, so far, no sign of any. I still don't get how the Barnacles were found so quickly, given the vast area that would need to searched on even a single world and that they reportedly don't show up as blue circles on the scanner from your ship. I can see crash sites visually from a couple of km away - but I could easily fly right over one and miss it. I've not seen any signatures like the Barnacle on my SRV wave scanner, though I guess it might look like an SRV wreck from a distance and I do check those.
.
Regarding my previous post about the anagrams of Seneca Toule, I cannot find either CE Leo or CT Leo in-game under those designations. I'll check the 2MASS designations this evening (CE Leo = 2MASS J11442423+2321228 and CT Leo = 2MASS J11502111+2136189).
.
The technological plague should be a big issue that concerns all the superpowers, so I'm surprised that they are not making public efforts to either help find Palin's missing ship or conduct their own research. Likewise, the discovery of traces of any non-human civilisation should be a huge historical event sparking a big interest in research into the UAs and Barnacles, yet it's all been done by one person whose project was originally terminated by the Federation. Also, where did the original UA convoys find their cargo? The authorities must have known about them and had a head start, researching secretly, but when the existence of UAs went public they had the opportunity to increase funding and the rate of progress. There are a lot of oddities in the plot that look like they won't get answered without a combination of player action (without which we'd never have discovered the UAs when we did, let alone deciphered their transmissions) and time for the scripted events to take their course. If Palin was attacked and had Report Crimes Against Me turned on, the authorities would have known immediately, so I suspect a drive 'accident' will be the cause, which should leave some wreckage to find. The mystery DBXs also remind me of the unknown ships reportedly following Starship One before she disappeared. (Why did Starship One change course? Was she trying to throw off pursuit?). The story is moving on but right now we're waiting for events to play out rather than being pro-active, which is why, if CGs to find the wreckage of Palin's ship and resume his research don't take place, it might be an idea to press for them as part of the Canonn's objective to progress their own research.
Fly safe!

Hello there Frontier! A question for you. Do we have to make everything up here, or is there some real - detailed- content to discover regarding alien species... right now? Without any updates or so? Stuff we can actually interact with, rather than speculate about?

It really is about time you answered that question. Please.

Id kindly request that everyone pauses until that question is answered.

I'd like to know that too, but honestly I'm quite fine with searching for something "unknown" deep in space without knowing that there is something to actually look for. But more than that I would like to know if FD is planning to give us proper tools for searching/scanning. As for now we have:

1. Own eyes. Which are deceived by game engine which spawns objects only when you directly fly/drive into it. I learned long time ago that if I'm looking for POI object then I need to fly the blue circle through, turn around, fly through again, hang still for some time, switch to external camera or even land and then, maybe, I'll see something. I often see objects that spawn in front of my eyes out of nowhere, even that I looked at the place for minutes and there was nothing. This prevents me from seeing objects from the height or some distance.
2. Ship's radar which, while in planetary/orbital cruise, is worthless. It shows blue circles and nothing else. Sorry, it shows something. If I shoot some outcrop and leave mineral chunks on the ground - then ship's radar show them.
3. SRV scanner which is a mess. It detects outcrops, meteorites, objects, even barnacles, but I cannot filter the signals and they often mix up which makes them sometimes hard to decode.
4. SRV radar which is more or less the same as ship's one.

We fly spaceships, it's year 3302, and we have searching abilities like XVII century sailors. Actually worse, we don't even have a spyglass. That way if we don't know exactly what and where to look for, we won't find anything unless we fly in it by mere accident. ;P Still, I'm looking for barnies and other "unknowns" in deep space, currently - Orion Nebula. xD

Searching for barnacles is very time consuming, IMHO FD/MB should make it clear whether barnacles in fact do exist in NEBULAE outside the Pleiades, this would avoid CMDRs searching for barnacles in other NEBULAE pointless.

MB, AFAIR, stated that there's other nebula than Pleiades, but he cannot reveal it's location/name/whatever to not to spoil barnacles origin. One would assume that nebulae means two of them: Pleiades and barnies origin one. The question is if the origin nebula is reachable for us at the moment. My guess is - no.

I had speculated the "logo" on barnacles might be the Witch Head Nebula as seen from the Pleiades, that it took on some sort of reflection of it's surroundings.

I found nothing during my 3 hour tour other than survey caches and fluorescing valleys.

So i'm sorry in advance for this, but i wanted to share something with you guys.
Because all of my family and coworker are looking strangely at me but i thought you guys, of all peoples, would understand.

I'm on my way to open a portal to the CookieVerse !!!! :D

It serves no purpose, it works itself making new cookies over times, to buy more factories to bake more cookies and so on...
It's oddly addictive, and it helps not getting bored between two landings, for those of us who are out in deep space !

Plus, i know some of you guys will call them Biscuits, but the Dev is French and us snail eaters call them Cookies, deal with it

Michael Brookes and DBOBE: I demand you model them in the game or I'm ragequitting ;)

Quoting from the Article: "The collaboration operates a number of labs around the world that fire lasers through long tunnels..."

I always knew that firing laz0rz at the barnacles was just true science - ED is a sim still :)

I doubt the logo is barnards loop. Lore-wise there's been about a thousand years of history where people could travel there; There's no permit systems. if anyone was in barnards loop there we would know

The simplest explanation seems to be a faction logo, There's no reason to assume it's any sort of message for us and they're not a natural phenomena. [edit] And it indicates the origin of a particular barnacle in a way useful to those who made them, not just us

Currently tearing through the game files to find some evidence that they can in fact spawn outside of the pleiades, It's incredibly frustrating to find nothing but nav beacons, not exploring again until there's some evidence and not simply a dev comment

Has anyone noticed the logo being used by someone of the backers group : https://www.kickstarter.com/profile/659046585 ?
I wonder if this is the source of that logo.

You are now entering the twilight zone.

Especially after someone the previous page mentioned 'running out of steam'...

Many hours of searching Veil West, North America, Cave, and Iris nebulae have yielded no barnacles. Coming home and taking a break to keep an eye out for compromised carrier signals and any trace of the Prof.
