Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

Apparently there's been a leak about the price today. 60 dolla for the preorder.

That is a game I'll definitely pre-order... ED is a bit much for my wife to handle, controls wise, but I suspect NMS will strike the right balance of gameplay.

Also apparently there's lots of Internet folk all kicking off that 60 dolla is too expensive for an "indy" game. Don't understand that viewpoint myself. If the game is good then why shouldn't it be priced at the same level as the typical AAA generic rubbish that seems to get the big dollar investment all the time.

So having said that...it better be good. :)

Sadly there's a lot of "gamers" who have a very slender grasp on the realities of software development costs...

Given what's in it, how can it NOT be a $60 game? Seriously, this has more gameplay and content than the vast majority of AAA games currently being put out.

It's not incredibly clear to me what the gameplay actually is. It seems to be a crafting game, where you upgrade your ship so you can fly further, but it's definitely the sort of thing where I won't be able to tell if this is fun until I try it myself (or read the reviews, more cheaply!).

Agreed.
And since it's all procedurally generated, I can only wonder how samey everything will feel after a few months.

But it will sure open new doors.
One of my collegues, a guy that exclusively play commercial AAA titles, is overjoyed by the fact that he can fly to the end of the galaxy. He has never heard of Elite Dangerous or Star Citizen before, so if he likes NMS, chances are that he will look for similar games. :)

I found this - https://www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyTheGame/comments/2ewhfp/all_confirmed_no_mans_sky_features

I did chuckle, because as I was reading down the list it could of been a post in the ED forums a few years ago.

The universe is a living breathing place that just works. Shipping lanes, trade routes, freighters, space stations. Planets have ecologies - Lets hope this works! [yesnod]

If it take a 3 months for that to happen, isn't that about 2 months more than most AAA titles?

Even if there wasn't a direct story or mission/plot (which there is) why would just a procedural universe to "blaze your own trail" in (whoops, copyright infringement ;) ) not be worthy of AAA status if that's what the users want and the quality of it is up to snuff.

There are a crapload of AAA FPSs that offer only 3-4 hours of single player gameplay (or, in the case of Star Wars Battlefront - ZERO) and then rely on multiplayer to keep people interested. But not everyone is all about the multiplayer, and I consider those games to have less content than a game like ED or NMS.

I'm just wondering how COD gets to call itself AAA and demand premium pricing, but people suddenly complain about a game like NMS charging the same?

I have to admit, my enthusiasm for NMS did lessen over time, but after reading the latest hand-on at http://io9.gizmodo.com/no-mans-sky-just-got-even-cooler-now-that-weve-seen-it-1762270587, I am hyped again! A lot of those things I want in ED seem to be there from day one (meeting NPCs at stations, getting our of your seat, meeting different alien races, real fauna and flora on planets etc.). Granted, the graphics are a little more comic-like, but I do not have any problem with that, I think NMS' visuals look awesome, too. And the fact that it's not an MMORPG and neither advertised as one is not a drawback but a plus in my book (multiplayer was not what draw me towards ED).

It coming out on June 21st will put a real test on my ED addiction! Really looking forward to this one again! :)

I don't mind the comic-y graphics but I have to say that reading about the gameplay doesnt really enthuse me at the moment. The devs go out of the way to point out that the core game is about exploration but the gameplay mechanic behind this exploration really doesn't seem that interesting from the limited amount I've read. I was hoping for some depth to this exploration but it really doesn't seem anymore interesting than exploring is in ED and that's really saying something when the game is supposed to be about exploration.

Well, at least the procedural generation of planets, flora and fauna seems to create more variation than the current airless planets in ED, so at least exploration in a more natural, less explicit-gameplay-task-way would be much more varied than in ED, I guess.

I am looking forward to it. But now it must try and live upto the hype they themselves have helped boost. They have done a good job in getting the game noticed, that is good for them. They just have to deliver it now, there are plenty of people and others [alien], waiting for it to land..:O
.
I like the graphics, sort of old 50's sci-fi maybe, that is o.k. with me.
Just waiting now.

Wait - NMS has life, animals and plants on airless planets?

I do not know, but they have life on planets with atmosphere.

This game will be a paradise for explorators - it will never be shutted down, there will be billions of living worlds. This could be a modern "Frontier".
IF FD not push a living world into Elite - a many of solo/group players will go to No Man Sky and they will not return to ED or SC.
