Griefing is prevalent in any online game where the challenges of the game have been successfully achieved by a certain % of the gaming world. People get bored and become bullies which is essentially what briefing is. It is p*ss annoying and if you're not a genius at combat then there's no way you can fight off 3 attackers who have serious weaponry. The developers either need to deal with it using a appropriate mechanism or they will lose online players and if there is going to be a paid-for subscription service, money.
As for piracy, there should be a way of challenging a trader as a pirate and then that player has an option to capitulate, run or fight. Choosing to fight carries the risk of being destroyed but a win can bring it's own rewards in bounty and booty. Running away in a slower ship is probably not a good idea but worth a shot especially if you keep your jumps short and always have an 'out' navigation plot. Capitulating would mean dumping your cargo (possibly dummy pods) and making like a tree whilst they pick up your cargo*.
Unfortunately pirates by their nature don't tend to be the nicest bunch around so I'll be looking for insurance to cover the cost of my destroyed ship like in the original game.
* There could be a time limit on the cargo life expectancy of a couple of minutes to give you time to get out of there so that you're not hunted down first before they go back and collect the booty.
