Here is my first attempt using Audacity to clean up some of the barnacle sounds.

Merope 5c V1

I took this as 12 minutes of audio from Merope 5c using fraps. I've then sped up the audio track by 10x to get a closer approximation to a trombone/horn instrument. I've removed some spacing between the notes as well as as much of the distortion as I can so I wouldn't trust my timings as I rushed this ( I should be working right now!)

It sounded at first before I started removing some of the distortion that there were multiple notes in the mix however from repeated listening to the same section it sounds more like alternation between 2 notes but with higher volume to some.

I'll play around some more and use some longer recordings people have posted, I'm hoping that my post of this will help someone else with their ideas.

One thing I didn't mention is that in between each note there is a steady sound that makes me think of a cat going 'meowmeow'. This disapears in the audio I pulled today after each distortion event.

A word of advice, I wouldn't get side tracked trying to decrypt the code at first, we need to prove that the message repeats first and foremost. If there is no repeat its highly unlikely there is anything there as it would be a randomly generated stream. I truly want there to be something there and I don't mean to kill the hype but a small patch of skepticism on your tinfoil jackets would be a wise idea.

On a side note, from my earlier barnacle listening days I have noticed notes that are in the "crinkling" sound. There are never any notes immediately after the crinkling but there are numerous times were the crinkling and a note coincided. Also of note when the sound is slower that x20 there are three different notes that I can ascertain between crinkling noises. The sound is very organic, this is in contrast to binary's nature which is mechanical.... Regardless I plan to relisten to different clips and I hope we find it more!

It might help if we could find a message delimiter. That might be one of the prosigns CT ("Copy this") -.-.- or AR (new page / message separator) .-.-.

Should have organized by 8s instead of 10s, in case there was a power of two number system involved.

There are no repeats that I can see. It is possible the message is salted, though I am unsure why it would be.

Thanks for your tips. Looking for repetition is wise, though it wouldn't kill a message possibility if it doesn't repeat, as it could be salted. I will listen carefully for the crinkling, it sounds interesting.

EDIT: On the Zenith's analysis of its own recording, using DCODE you can found that the words ARMED, ATTACK, CENTER and ENEMY are possible

Putting various barnacle recordings into Sonic Visualiser has made it easier to pick out the notes in all recordings much more accurately by adding in a Peak Frequency Spectrum Layer. It gives a nice breakdown of the different components of the audio.

One interesting thing I found was how the 'grinding' sound intensity follows a pattern. The intensity appears to have 4 levels and it repeats something like this:

3,2,3,4

I'm sure someone smarter than me might find that useful somehow

If it's not English phrases then we're even more screwed without a way to determine the letter divides.

If it is english phrases, the trouble is that we have no reliable way of knowing our word guesses are correct.

Having slept on it I'm increasingly convinced that all was discovered here was a scary picture in some noise. Until someone can come up with a plausible translation of a much, much longer passage, I can't lend it any credence.

And the thing which I think is close to being the nail in this thing's coffin: since the initial 'warning' recording was of a random fragment of barnacle recording, most of the time you would expect that it would start not just in the middle of a word but probably actually in the middle of a letter.

So the fact that the more translation takes the assumption that the recording starts neatly at the beginning of a word is another sign that this is just a symptom of the fact that it's very easy to make meaningful phrases out of any collection of dots and dashes whether intended as meaningful or not.

I didn't wish for my main contribution to this thread so far to be some extreme party pooping, but to put a more positive spin on this: maybe it's not morse - but there could still be some sort of message here.

Well, we're yet to publish an official retraction on the Firefly Fandango on Galnet, to put forward more speculation would be a little nuts perhaps, but certainly fun

I'm not convinced, but I just report, right

Evidence for it:
135-150ly UA shell marks a 'safe zone' from a possible supernova from Merope
Possible TinFoil theory regarding Halsey and 'stars...creation' (will have to expand on this later as I have to drive to work)

One counter argument I can think of:
If the UAs 'know' about the supernova possibility, and they're related to the Barnacles, why would the Barnacles be placed smack bang in the middle of the danger zone? Seems a little short sighted!

Unless the goal is to get 'us' to distribute the MAs and the UAs to a safe place because they can't do it themselves...

It does also mean, however, that Obsidian Orbital is toast. I can't see that myself.

There I was yesterday, after waiting all morning to get onto the server, sat on Merope 5C wearily filling my python with 184 of MA, pitch black -middle of the night on 5C; LMC and ringed planet above... logged out & back in to reinstance... full daylight! But no sun in the sky, & no planet/stars either. I quickly gathered 2 MAs & relogged... back to full night. Lighting bug? or Merope flaring prior to going supernova??

The is a useful word because we would expect to see it often in a passage, but we wouldn't expect to see 5 dots in a row as often in a random pattern.

A problem with no breaks "....." can also mean "5". Also "the" is a word that can be ditched from a sentence and get your point across, especially when a communication takes an extra 100 seconds to pass along by adding it in.

I may have been a little overzealous in removing all but a single case of a particular word from this.

I'm going to lean more towards skepticism on this one, by now I would think you guys would have at least found the pattern that initially sparked this chase unless we're looking at a a large enough message that it might take a full day to record the whole thing....

Actually that might not be too far of the mark, during the last CG I was farming on Merope 5c and dusk til dawn was something close to a full 72 hours or so.



Anyway... Just a query, Michael, if we went off down the wrong rabbit hole you might want to let us know so the brakes get applied before someone makes a 4 day recording and somehow translates a 5 page thargoid manifesto out of it.

Do any of these provide a Carriage return - space - shift type function?

On a keyboard Shift is on the Left hand side space is in the middle and Carriage return (enter) is on the right?

The crunches are so defined as to location that the sound comes from I cant believe they don't hold a key of some sort

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that the lack of THE was anything definitive... as you can see from my posts over the last day there are plenty of reasons that I can think of that we should be cautious about being too interested in the original warning message and any other words we discover in these patterns.

For example, if I generate a lengthy random string of morse:
