I'm sure it's been said before, but...
...why nerf when you can buff?
A lot of ED's ships need a vigorous overhaul, but a few are actually very good - the FAS is one of the good ones. Instead of reducing the effectiveness (and fun) of good ships, bring all the mediocre ones up to their levels of shininess. That way we all get a delicious buffet of interesting, effective ships to pick and choose from, rather than a bland spread of sadness and shortcomings.
I just made myself hungry. >_>
Ships are only good compared to each other. Making every ship better is way harder to balance than bringing the two OP ships into line
Also if every ship had as ludicrously consistent pitch rate as the FAS then we'd have incredibly boring turrets in space fights with no counterplay or outmanouevring
Oh I don't mind buff threads. It's only nerf threads that get my goat. People apparently wanting things to be LESS FUN. I honestly do not get it. "Hey FD, this ship is really nippy and spins on a dime, could you make it so it's less fun to use?" "Hey FD, this ship is really great, but I think it's too cheap, could you make it so that everyone [else] has to grind more until they can use it?".
Then in the next post there will be [probably the same] people moaning about how the game is dull and grindy.
It'd be more work, but the end result would be good for all ships. At the moment a lot of ED's ships are pretty sad and limited affairs...which is fine if all ships are like that, but vessels like the Cobra, Asp Explorer, FAS, Python, Anaconda, Clipper (sans epoch-long turning) and FDL show the rest that the suckage isn't applied consistently. Could you imagine if, rather than leaving hulls like the Type-7 or DBE or Asp Scout to gather dust in showrooms because they're mechanically terrible, all hulls could be as individually attractive for their own reasons as the FAS? It'd be a golden age :O
And equally shiny doesn't have to mean equal stats or performanceShips can be different, just make them good with that difference!
Ships like the FAS and FDL outshine all others and make those "shiny" ships worthless in comparison.
I agree that many ships need a buff but it's easier to buff 3 ships and nerf 2 ships than to buff 27

I completely agree CMDR...nerf upon nerf has brought all these other potentially enjoyable ships to a total Meh!!
Now someone wants to finish the job off .
I am seeing a lot of discontent here for the fact that the FDL has a class 6 PP. So I am wondering if you guys think that all ships should be forced to choose between weapons, thrusters, and shields or just certain ones.
Lets do a comparison
FDL vs FAS
Cost:A rated FDL costs about 15-25 Million more
Number of weapons hardpoints that need power: FDL -5, FAS - 4
Agility: FAS is the clear winner here
Defenses: FDL relies on big shields and FAS relies on big armor to stay alive
Speed: Tie - About the same for both ships
So if having weapons, shields, and thrusters is bad then should we request a nerf to the FAS then as well?

Sometimes nerfs are warranted such as with the Python, or SCB stacking. Both are still plenty useful in PvE. The FAS and FDL can hit above their weight, but if we're gonna gun for ships that lack direct competition in the price range where does that leave the Vulture?
Nerfing the FDL and FAS won't fix what made them 'OP' to begin with, and that's why they shouldn't be kneecapped. Not because no ships should ever be nerfed.
Na, in solo and private groups, no nerfs are ever necessary as anyone can downgrade their loadout or buy an alternative ship if they dont like the lovely abilities of that ship.
Only PVP farts up a storm re nerfs.
The core malady is not that those ships are OP by themselves (in PvP, PvE they are more or less balanced) but what external factor makes them OP. In this case, the HRP-SR-Rails meta that allows these ships to be far more durable than they ought to be.
HRPs being as OP as they are is what makes the rest of the meta possible. Nerf HRPs, not the ships, and you can solve so many problems.
Simply taking a sledgehammer to the FDL and FAS will just pass the buck to the next most OP ships in the current meta while slamming the d*cks of FDL and FAS pilots in a doorway.
Except that egregiously overpowered ships, modules, etc. throw off the balance in PvE too by invalidating other options as blatantly inferior. If Burst lasers did 300% more DPE and DPS compared to Pulse and Beam, nobody in their right mind would use anything else. Overpowered modules can also have the side-effect of masking real issues ships have, preventing them getting the adjustments they need to be competitive WITHOUT using the overpowered module in question. Bringing down overpowered features is more sensible than trying to raise everything up to the new standard.
The game is already too balanced and nerfed. Stop asking for nerfs and trying to screw things up. There is already so many messed up and broken things in the game like the mission system and missing things we need like storage etc. and just running around flapping jaws about nerfing ships and balance is just stupid. there is always a more powerful ship. and that should be a goal for some get the powerful ship. not the powerful ship that's just like every other ship. FIX the stuff that needs fixing we have been playing an incredibly boring mission system for over a year.
You make some good common sense points, but, there is still stink in the air for some reason that i cant place. Just maybe its the magnitude of the nerf that tends to occur and nothing changes after that.
Actually no. The FDL and the FAS have the best base stats in the game regardless of meta.
They would both be strong in a shield meta, a hull meta, a missile meta or a minelauncher meta simply because they have a massive PD, lots of base hull, good internals, and above all a fantastic flight moel. Sure the FAS has naff shields that make it weak in a pure shield meta, but even then it's super powerful
No. If you are including cost as a benchmark for how a ship should perform, then the Vulture is waaaaaay out of line.
