The Oculus Rift CV1 General Discussion Thread

My May 23rd - June 02nd order was delivered on my birthday on April 29th.
Excellent surprise.

So after they pushed me back from delivery in april to the said May 23rd - June 02nd, I got mine still within the original timeframe.

Wow, that's cool! I know I shouldn't get my hopes up, but if there is any chance I get my Rift before the recently pushed back date (now end of July - beginning of August! Three more months!!!) I'll take it! :)

My CV1 just turned up today, first rift I've played with. I can't however find any specific settings for the rift in the graphics menu so I assume the primary adapter is my monitor and mirrored to the rift? Should I be selecting 2160x1200 as my resolution? framerate output seems to be locked to the 60Hz of my monitor not the 90Hz of the rift.

Is there a way to see what the resolution & framerate the rift is actually displaying?

Cheers,
Dave

There should be separate HMD settings to select. I think I had 'HMD (Speakers)' and 'HMD (Headphones)', but there could have been another option as well.

The strange thing for me was that it didn't matter which option I chose, the sounds only came out of my speakers and not the CV1 headphone :(

Edit: My Rift arrived yesterday too, and I loved ED in it. But they really need to fix the System Map - it was unusable :(

System map works fine for me! ( I mapped all movements to my hotas)

I just changed my system default sound output to the rift headphones and that sorted the sound output for me.

I've selected the HMD output by the way, wondering if the resolution has an effect on the Rift or if it always outputs at its native res?

Cheers

Got my CV1 the day before yesterday. Elite is really spectacular using CV1. Very impressed with it. There are some issues however:

On planet surfaces there is some juddering or framerate issues. I haven't tried to dial back GFX settings yet, not sure if thats actually the problem or if its CPU related - my CPU is a 3470 and not officially kosher according to the Rifts checking system, however its overlclocked to 4ghz and seems perfectly fine in all other respects. The gfx settings seem to be different than that set for monitors, as if Elite has automatic quality settings for HMD or something.

Using the Xbox controller takes some getting used to. I haven't figured out if there's a way to search in the galaxy map apart from taking off the headset and typing on the keyboard.

Sound is a little glitchy although I think that's a USB 3.0 problem - Ive ordered a separate USB3.0 pci card to see if that's it.

After about 3 hours playing my face hurts and my wife is angry. Not sure if these can be resolved! Also my Anaconda bridge could use a minibar. Lot of wasted space there.

The hurting face will go away with time, wives will always be angry, its part of their genetic make-up. the problem is you never know why or for how long it will last.

What's the best/optimal in-game settings for CV1 ?

disable sli
ultra

seems a good place to start. my GTX980 *almost* manages this but not quite so i dial back shadows a little, but i doubt you will have such problems.

now i do not do things like supersampling etc so if you want to do that, then you may have to dial back some settings, however your rig should be fine in VR imo on ultra

You may have the side straps too tight. I'm still figuring this out, as after playing Chronos for a couple of hours yesterday, I had serious Oculus Face. Try loosening the top strap so the back triangle cradles the back of your skull, then adjust the side straps to securely hold it on your face without squeezing too hard.

As far navigating the galaxy map, until a Virtual Keyboard is implemented, Touch Typing if you can is the way to go. Something I haven't tried yet, since I can touch type, is to use Google's Remote Desktop, and use the keyboard on your smart phone. If you can peek through the nose hole, you may be able to see the smartphone virtual keyboard. YMMV based on the size of your nose.

Also, for full immersion, get a HOTAS. At the very least, the $40 T-Flight HOTAS X.

Got my CV1 - Impressions

I7, nVidia 980ti, 16 gigs RAM, SSD - No judders, no slow downs. Ultra settings.

After waiting since 1990 or so for good VR, I have the Rift. First off, I have decided that the secret to VR is good head tracking. If the head tracking is smooth and accurate, your brain can forgive a lot of other issues. The Rift did not disappoint. After 3+ hours, I became very familiar with the Cobra Mk III cockpit. It was real.

Tip: Set up a command in Voice Attack for F12. I use "display reset". Sit back in your chair and do that.

Now the issues. God Rays. Yep, they are there. I learned to ignore them. It's like being in a J J Abrams Star Trek film. Live with it, and hope that there are replacement lenses someday. FOV: If you take the time to look, it's not that wide, but is fairly easy to ignore. What you will have to get used to is looking around the cockpit to see all the instruments. I think it actually adds to the experience.

If you wear glasses, I would suggest getting contacts. Glasses do not fit in there well, in my opinion. I'm going tomorrow to get fitted.

Motion Sickness: The worst was going into the debug camera and moving over the ship. Yikes, I almost puked. During play, there are ways to induce motion sickness, but I can't explain what those things are, you'll figure them out. The best way to avoid it is to just pretend you are really flying the ship, and don't do anything you wouldn't normally do in that situation. You can look around all you want - I wish I could explain it better, but if you try to make yourself sick, you can.

Resolution and Screen Door Effect: Is it perfect? Nope. But take it from someone who played VR games at Dave and Buster's in the 90s: It's damn good. And it's just going to get better. Look at it this way. If no one steps up and becomes an Early Adopter, we'll never have a second generation. You'll be amazed how much your brain wants to believe what it is seeing.

Controls: I use a Saitek 52 pro HOTAS and Voice Attack. Most of the game plays quite well - I've been practicing not using the keyboard for a while now. However, the Galaxy Map and the System Map do not play nice in VR, especially the System Map. I had to reach for the mouse, and CAREFULLY use it to scroll the System Map around. Your milage may vary.

I have the Nav and Systems panels on focus when looked at, and not the comms or SRV panels. It's very cool - turns out that when following a jump route, the Nav panel tells you how many jumps are left! Would never have known that.

Appearance: Big. Very, very Big. Scale is fantastic. All the descriptions in the world will not prepare you for it. I will NEVER play Elite on a monitor again.

Come in, the water's fine. [up]

There are two options. Some people select "VR High" pre-setting. And then enable 1.5 supersampling. I haven't tried that, and instead went for the second method: Everything on "Ultra". I turn Blur off, leave SMAA on to reduce some of the jaggies, and leave Supersampling at x1.0. Even on a heavily OC'd GTX 980 Ti, if you put Supersampling at anything higher than x1.0 then head rotation will be very smooth but postional tracking (moving your body around) will create slight judder on objects.

It was sad seeing the judder because the 1.5 Supersampling was giving some very sharp clean lines. But it's so computationally expensive.

Okay you guys make it sound great but I cannot get over just how bad it actually looks. Its a washed out mess with no true black level and no way to fix it. FD has not even confirmed they intend to do anything about it. This is not consumer ready and never should have been portrayed that way where is the support they said they were giving this. I honestly would like a refund as this game was beautiful in the DK2 and looks like complete crap now in the supposed consumer device. Shameful execution of a product.

Count_Zero thanks for your excellent feedback. Re the head tracking - how often do you need to reset? I have a Trackhat and I need to reset far more often than I'd like. I was hoping with the Rift the head tracking would be so good that this would be a thing of the past.

I still can't get over the stark contrast between people's experiences, it's very odd. I know we're all different and have different expectations etc. but is it just a case of some people are more forgiving of faults and others are more sensitive to any tiny imperfection or is there more to it than that? Could it be that there are some faulty batches for example or is it down to individual setups?

Not very. I realized that the Frame Shift Charging message and the countdown is off center! Makes me OCD. I'm probably doing more than necessary, likely only needs to be done on first going in.

Some people I think expect it to look as good as a monitor. We're a couple years away from that. I've seen really bad VR, perhaps that's the difference.

What has you bugged? Is it the blacks? or the Gods rays? (verses the smearing of the DK2) I cannot believe, given time, that Frontier won't improve the CV1 experience. I have been reading every impression on every game people have been trying on their new cv1's especially ED and it would seem you are in a very small group of detractors. If you are indeed that unsatisfied I vote you get a refund. Personally, I can't wait till my CV1 arrives. I know I will not be disappointed. I can't wait to play ED , DCS world. Farcry 3and 4 Fallout 3and 4 etc etc etc and pretty much all the evidence of my continuing research suggests I will be very happy.
Cheer up mate
