The unavoidable poll: PvP vs PvE!

What is more important for you: PvE or PvP?

  • PvE

    Votes: 609 83.3%
  • PvP

    Votes: 122 16.7%

  • Total voters
    731
  • Poll closed .
So I don't see the point of this poll other than re-affirming that this forum has more PvE players than PvP players.

As I pointed out in the OP, I can't recall seeing a poll asking this specific question unbiased. The votes concerning similar topics in this forum I am aware of normally discuss the ED playing modes - open, groups, solo - but not the basic question about what people deem as more important - PvP or PvE - in ED. There might be such a poll, but I have been around since before the release of the game and - as I said - can't remember seeing such a specific and basic poll about this specific question. Hence, me posting the poll.

Failing having any evidence it's unreasonable to assume that the forum population ISN'T representative.

I don't think a case is proven until it is disproved, since anyone and everyone can make random claims that automatically fulfill themselves until it is challenged, it doesn't make rational sense. If anything the conclusion to be drawn from the forum polls that distinguish PvP players and PvE players is that there is a possibly biased sample space, not that it is representative of the actual in-game population considering that it doesn't require the confirmed purchase and experience within the game to own a forum account and vote in polls.

Well stop. Just read the sentence and stop trying to be clever.

I did, and I stated what I derived from it.

Are you accusing me AGAIN of "reading things in" because I asked ANOTHER question? You really DON'T like me asking questions, do you?

I think it's clear who is making this a personal issue and I have no interest in having personal debates on this forum.

No it's not EVE online but i choose to play this game the same way i play EVE; in the end for me it's "EVE with cockpits". I don't want and cannot force you or another player to play the same way like me and the opposite is also true.

As a longtime eve player myself i find it find your stance a bit odd.
If i ever knew a game that relies heavily on player coorporation, both in PvP AND PvE, it's eve. Even more important, both depend on each other.
Indiscriminitly caving each others heads in doesn't make a multiplayer game.
Both, PvE and PvP, should ideally be viable options with a purpose.

True, asking this question unbiased is rare, now the question is the sample space's bias and what purpose is there in sampling a biased audience.

Sure, but that raises the question of whether the forum or reddit is more representative of the player group as a whole. Do PvE-ers congregate only here and PvP-ers only on reddit? Or are the PvP-ers on reddit the same players as here on the forums, just without the PvE players there to argue with?

Yes, that was kind of my point. Any poll is going to be representative of one or another forum, but it only really tells you about the forum, not about the game.

Not when some of those people run away to solo. That dang mode is the plague of this game imho. Same goes for private servers. That's a terrible idea and does nothing other than splinter the community.

Karl Marx brought it to the point.

When I played First Encounters, back 1991(First Encounters was and still is, a fantastic game!), the game had 3 little mistakes: it looked ugly, it sounded ugly, you where utterly alone. I wished and dreamed about a game where I could met and join other players, playing it for over 3 years. Elite Dangerous now, fixed all those shortcomings. I can see why Frontier still offers the "offline" option. Only folks switching between both options to cheat, to avoid critical game experiences.

We should be all in one boat, the connection between those two modes kills Open play.

This is exactly the kind of statement that I call "unfunded". Yes, I may have the feeling that there are more PvPers on Reddit than here, but until I see a Reddit poll backing up this statement, it's nothing more than speculation.

I assume you mean "unfounded" rather than "unfunded"? Assuming you do, then yes of course, that's why I prefaced it with "I wonder". My point really is that this poll only tells you things about the makup of this forum, other forums may be different.

Ultimately, such a study would be of little value. It'd just be a ego contest and the only thing up for grabs being self-validation. People can imagine that there are hundreds of thousands of invisible PvPers secretly seal-clubbing it up in open, but the simple logistics of the game world dictate that PvP is a rare occurrence outside of a few systems where PvPers congregate either to thump each other's chests or gang up on helpless PvE players and traders. It's so incredibly pointless that I can't imagine there are more people who consider PvP the 'meat' of the game for them as opposed to PvE.

Solo/Group exist for a reason after all.
