Pretty pictures...but the stated intent of the devs is that people will play the game to 'get to' the center.

With each world only having one biome...and a limited set of 'things' to see? And these fancy worlds very rare in the galaxy/universe? Yeah...the center will be the driving force of the game.

I will play the game as I want. NMS will give you this freedom in a rich universe for exploration

And a unique biome is much more than we have in ED.;)

Not beating up the game...or your choices. I think you will find the 'rich universe' lacking...much more than it does in E: D.

As I said, I'm in.

However, having proper expectations will help a lot of people. This is going to be a game, whose devs have clearly stated what they expect players to do....with very little focus on simulation. That's all I am trying to point out.

My expectations are that it will be a decent game...but a poor excuse for a simulation. Overall, the devs have pretty much stated they are happy if people just putter around...but the real game is to get to the center of the galaxy.

At which point I have to ask, 'Then what?"

Concentrating on the game instead of the "simulation" would be wonderful. Engaging game play is where development should focus. NMS just has to bring a decent progression to the journey to the center of the universe and not be buggy. It's promising.

...but somehow I think that a lot of people are going to hate it...

You think that a lot of people are going to hate a game that no one has yet to even see the commercial release of.

Well, good for you, and you may be right, just like many hate ED and SC. So what - haters hate!

Do tell, what are you seriously expecting after that?

I have no idea...that is what has my interest. If the game 'ends' once you get there...great...had fun playing...but if it turns out to be a 'beginning' Woo HOO!

As I said...I have the game...am looking forward to release and will give it as much a chance as I have given any other game I have played.

I am not attacking the game...just pointing out the clearly stated dev points from at least 3 or 4 videos where they have stated such.

This is going to be a game...pejoratives or accolades set to the side until people get their hands on it.

Promised by the devs? A 'non-linear story' to drive/guide players there. Wait and see is the name of the game at this point!

I think I mentioned this before, but the concept of racing to a point while harvesting and base building reminds me a lot of the basic concept behind Carrier Command.

That is not a Bad Thing at all.

At that point life will be complete as you will discover the meaning of life hidden at the centre:

I can't believe your writing that with a straight face.. [big grin]

Regards the getting to the centre thing. If your still alive (IRL), then Sean did say, there is 'something there', that will make you want to keep playing. What that is, has not been mentioned.
But I will be long gone before I reach the centre (dead I mean IRL probably)..[yesnod] That's if I played the game and got the most from it.

Haha :) tough means better critique which sometimes improves the genre ultimately I guess.

You must also feel these concerns about sameyness Viajero? :)

Well, I guess that is a very personal and individual appreciation. Personally I enjoy all the different places I ve visited in ED, some more than others obviously. But each one has somehting always unique and different about it. That also includes the context around your visit obviously, wether it is on a specific mission, or a VRS gathering with friends, or an explo expedition etc.

I have a few videos in my Youtube channel describing some of the planets I ve visited recently and each one has its particularities tbh.

Ariel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kEWG1NUY-k
Ganymede: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tg0rsfFLQc
Caucuma 10A: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGQmdAifY40

Also, I am of the opinion that there has to be a certain level of "not out of the ordinary" as a basis for a game system that tries to replicate a whole galaxy (wether it is 400 billion or 18 quintillion star systems). After all if everything is special, then nothing really is. I think you need that "regular" basis to be able to appreciate the real discoveries or special places when they happen now and then, as opposed to every frikking minute (game glitches, or not :p):

I am sure NMS will also go along the same lines, especially given there will be atmospheres and alien life everywhere. But as I said it is a very personal thing, nothing wrong with having a different view on the matter.

Carrier Command is deep inside my top 10 games of all time (and I've been gaming since 1977), it was such a brilliant game, amazing fun to play and amazing fun just to faff about with!

There was a reboot 1-2 years ago that I bought day one.. oh dear me, what a that was, I was so so disappointed I didn't trade it in, I actually tossed it in the bin.

I must parry and advance by saying thus:

I love the graphical look of ED it feels like I'm in space for sure. I was really more talking about the game play

It is not just the "look", me thinks. It is the huge variety of spatial geometry (be it surface, rings etc) that can both be an actual "active" part in the gameplay, especially emergent gameplay (see rock rats, distant worlds expedition, racers, low altitude dogfight considerations, et al,) and also support any activity that you actually do in it each time in a very very different way (i.e. assaulting bases using the surface geometry to avoid certain defensive locations and turrets etc).

I think that splitting the enormous variety of geometry available in Elite from its gameplay and discussing them separately is like ripping out someone´s spinal cord, to be honest. In Elite, both gameplay and the geometry generated by the Stellar Forge (and the freedom it offers you) are integral parts of each other.

In No Man´s Sky you ll probably see the same kind of integration but probably more oriented towards the survival aspects of the game wihtin each type of biosphere.

I'm expecting a LOT of people to be disappointed come release, I'm not against the game, heck it looks cool to me and I plan on buying it, but going off some people's ultra high expectation and the immense hype in some places. (ie, check out the NMS steam forum and chatroom. its like NMS is going to be the greatest game of all time and then some!)

I think it will be a great game to play but not what some envision.

Nothing disappointed me more than ED and their updates.

at that time any other space game being released already would be like finding an oasis in the desert.

Could you please be more specific?
You want space to feel like a crowded street?
