Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

Any suggestion of the art books for those who buy on PC?

It'd very very sucky if not, but so far NMS seems a Steam only release for PC... :-(

Edit. Just read some very strong hints from Sean that it will support VR.

What the hell is wrong with giving a yes or no answer on VR support? Is there any benefit to shrouding that in mystery at all except giving people false hope for VR and a few more sales it wouldn't have gotten otherwise? I've had enough of that from CIG.

What strong hints are you referring to?

"It appears that No Man's Sky may be available for VR as Sean Murray, creator, has hinted in big style... I don't know what I'm allowed to say," he said on the subject. "It's something we're thinking about. Morpheus, Oculus... There's nothing more cool and sci-fi than VR and a big procedural universe. I think that, for the people who want to just explore, and even for the space combat and things like that, it would be a good fit. Let's put it that way."

There will be an xbox port too.

And within that "...it currently looks unlikely that an Xbox One version of the game will be released...", which I guess would be a Sony thing given that "...No Mans Sky has been treated as if it was from one of our internal studios...”

"Thinking about it" is pretty weak sauce. How will he tackle first person locomotion in VR? I don't see why Oculus would forbid him to talk about it. They'd love to say it was coming soon. When I talked to dev relations last year, they weren't working with HG.

PSVR, I could see Sony wanting to remain shtum until a big announcement. But for the PC side, I haven't seen one case yet of a developer being vague about VR support and then suddenly delivering something amazing. It's always more like, they'd love to do it but don't have time or the interface isn't built for VR.

"Don't have time" is pretty much what Sean was saying in that last IGN interview when he says "we're a small team". But by saying that he's reaching for an excuse to not answer the question. HG is in bed with Sony now so he's bound by legal agreements including PSVR exclusive support (PC hacks not withstanding). His expressions though... yeah it's coming to VR. He's just not allowed to say it, but man... you can tell he wants to.

No there will not be an Xbox port. At least not in anything resembling the near to distant future. Sony's got this one.

Exploration.. That's really what's drawing me towards it, more than anything else. Exploring a rich sci-fi universe is going to be good fun. Obviously existing in that universe via crafting or whatever else, is also going to be great. But primarily for me, its the exploration side.

Same here. After testing the 2.1 beta, NMS is my only option to make a good exploration gameplay.

I'm still not sold on this one. Very much thinking I'll be reading a spread of reviews before getting it. It's got the potential to be very very samey in the same way ED is and then beyond that even. But it's whether the game has the depth and variety in the core gameplay to overcome sameyness. If it can do that where ED has struggled then it's a definite buy in from me.

Jezzah is indeed a "tough customer" to satisfy! :D

I somehow am starting to suspect that the space sim you must be looking for may actually never exist in our lifetimes! :p

On a serious note. I am also looking forward to this one!

Haha :) tough means better critique which sometimes improves the genre ultimately I guess.

You must also feel these concerns about sameyness Viajero? :)

I'll also be holding off for the reviews as it may still end up being a very snazzy demo in search of game - things like the way the other spaceships look very much like things you can maybe shoot as they float by rather than things you'll actively be engaged with. The game does look pretty promising though. Fingers crossed!

My expectations are that it will be a decent game...but a poor excuse for a simulation. Overall, the devs have pretty much stated they are happy if people just putter around...but the real game is to get to the center of the galaxy.

At which point I have to ask, 'Then what?"

It's not a galaxy, it's a quintillion-populated universe - after getting to the centre of this (!) you will seriously be asking 'Then what'...

...yeh...

[IT'S A GAME!!!]

The 'center' is clearly marked no matter where you are...the devs have clearly stated this is the main part of the game....getting there...following whatever story they have concocted to get you there. I've bought the game...but somehow I think that a lot of people are going to hate it.

The populated worlds they show in the videos are 'very rare'...again dev quote.

So you are going to bounce from place to place, trying to figure out how to trade your way up to a ship that can get you to the center of the star blob as fast as possible.
