The Oculus Rift CV1 General Discussion Thread

My blacks seem fine, but actual blacks are fairly rare. A lot of the time, there are visible dust clouds, but you can tell they are there on purpose. But there are areas of space that are truly black.

I've stopped playing ED just because of the black smearing. Only way to get rid of black smearing is to up the gamma which makes sky look like "downtown" sky. Both ways unusable for me!
Until FD comes up with contrast/brightness controls( like most games have) I'm out!

I've read so much about this "black smearing" and "god rays" but, not having access to an Oculus, don't really have a clear idea of what this actually looks like. Are there any videos available which illustrate this effect?

I can see why you might get confused when people talk about black smearing in a CV1 thread. As I understand it black smearing is a DK2 issue. Not true black but more dark gray is a CV1 issue and seems to be tied to driver or software -possibly Oculus 1.3 runtime. Some are not getting it or don't notice it depending on their history with VR. God rays or white bleeding has been disgust and there are videos and opinions on this forum and utube on this. Godrays are apparent on both CV1 and Vive but apparently more so on CV1. Most agree it is not a deal breaker and get use to them in ED. People's tolerence on the black issue also seems to vary depending on what they are use to and expect. Everybody sees color at a different frequency so some are going to be more affected than others. As the saying goes "your mileage may vary"

The general concensus seems to be the pros out way the cons in VR and in VR in ED but if your concerned it might be worth waiting till you can try before you buy as this is not quite ready for prime time tech and therefore early adopter stuff.

Personally, with all the reviews and videos I have read and watched especially by those who play what I play -ED, DCS, Iracing ( Skyrim and Fallout 4 (with Vireio) and more, I can't wait for my CV1. I believe those who say they can no longer play on a monitor.

edit
Just read in another forum here that Nvidia's new driver 365.19 fixes blacks appearing gray in Windows 10 which seems to confirm something I suspected in that it is a Win 10 issue and why not all notice this. Their driver release notes claim to have fixed this issue

Oculus Store install and HUD color changing?

Is anyone here running an Oculus Store install, and successfully changed their HUD colors? If so, what's the file and path of the xml that you changed? I can't find it. Thanks.

I don't have the store yet but I would think your GraphicsConfiguration.xml should be in the Products folder of what ever directory you installed the game in. You could try searching for this file? using Windows explore search feature on whatever drive Oculus home is installed on

Hi Everyone, I'm new to the forum.. Recently picked up Elite again due to getting a CV1 Rift. I hadn't played much since the beta :)

Elite is really really amazing with the Rift.. I love flying over a planet or close to a starport, the scale of things is just so cool. Even the cockpit feels so much more spacious than it looks in 2D (using mouselook).

I don't have any 'black smearing' problems, and very little 'god rays'. Be aware though that Elite introduces some god rays as part of the artwork (the 'terminal' display holograms have this a little bit even viewing on a normal 2D screen!). But I do get it a bit in the corners of the view, not a big problem though, I don't even notice it anymore.

One thing that bothers me a bit is the resetting of the viewpoint (suddenly I 'sit' 20cms lower or more forward etc), easily fixed by using the HMD Viewpoint Reset button but it's just annoying and immersion-breaking. And the galaxy view is very hard to use in 3D because you can't click on anything. I mapped a lot of its functions to the joystick but I still need some more.

But really this game is THE game for the Rift for me at the moment. It's so beautiful. Love the way I can step forward and see the nose of my ship (which can't normally be seen even with mouselook).

Another happy CV1 owner. It makes me so happy I ordered one. The re-center thing is also an annoyance with Trackir as well. Many have been complaining about the position shift as it occurs a lot while changing speed with your ship. Frontier put it in for those with static screens as some sort of movement effect I think but as many Trackir owners have requested a way to turn this off and now that VR is also finding it dam annoying I hope Frontier will finally get off their collective butts and give us a toggle for this. I find it a particular pain while fuel scooping. Congrats on getting your Rift .

FRONTIER ARE YOU READING THIS? Give us a way to turn this off. It hurts your VR poster child's immersion

Thanks for the suggestion. I could have sworn I used search before, but I guess not. I ended up finding it at C:\Program Files\Oculus\Software\frontier-developments-plc-elite-dangerous\Products\elite-dangerous-64\GraphicsConfiguration.xml

Thats a lot of visible dust clouds and they are new also as where I am docked I could blow through the mailslot into the perfect blackness of space with a beautiful ringed planet right there just 30 seconds away to action packed high RES now it looks like they turned lose a couple of kindergardners with grey crayons and a nice blurry purple crayon and told them to draw

After reading some more it seems that the Rift has more visible/noticable "God Rays" than the Vive due to having a higher contrast screen output.

So the obvious question from me is: Is it possible to dial down contrast/brightness on the Rift? Is there a settings UI for the Rift with sliders and what not?

the godrays are due to the lenses... if anyything i believe the VIVE has the higher contrast screen.... the vive lens has circular lens flairs, circular because they have fewer fresnel ridges... the rift has many more, which is why you see the continual ray effect.***

*** this is my jo average understanding, am sure there will be a more accurate explanation somewhere.

Maybe so, but that still doesn't answer my question. ;) Is there a UI for brightness and contrast on the Rift?

Surprised and disappointed to learn that's not disabled when using a HMD, I thought all "camera movement" had been disabled for VR. Presumably this has been raised in the Suggestions section on more than one occasion?

Short answer: NO!
would love if oculus or frontier introduced these adjustments for us to use!

Ok. So I found this. Related to DK2, but I assume this would work for the CV1 as well?:

Feedback from those who have the CV1 will be appreciated. :)

As anyone got a time scale from this email "Your order has been processed and your Rift is almost on its way! Look for a shipping confirmation email with tracking information soon" to the despatch of the rift per chance? thks in advance

got this message yesterday without the yellow text.... money has been removed from my better halve's account so expect in the the next week.. or so

Regarding god rays et' al it would seem the best way to get better results is to reduce the gamma/contrast and campaign for FDev to allow the 'player' to change these simple things 'in game' - A user workaround could be using Nvidia / display settings and customising the colour our leaders gave us to be more harmonious with each person's preference.. but hey... god rays are a feature of ED at present, it would seem ;)

I think I wasn't clear - it's not that gradual motion shifting that you get in 2D. That's definitely turned off in VR (and luckily so because it would mean instant motion sickness :) )

The effect I'm seeing is a sudden 'jump' in standard position. As if I was pressing the HMD recenter button except it happens automatically randomly. For example, if I happen to be looking to the left, the left is suddenly 'straight ahead' so if I turn my head forward I'm looking to the right. It's just immersion breaking, and it seems to be a bug or a break in the tracking or something.

But yeah I think the CV1 is totally worth it. Even though I didn't pay for it (I was an original kickstarter backer) but I would have ordered one and I would have been happy with it. Elite is really well made for it, the attention of detail in the cockpits is amazing. They're so much nicer in VR. For example: I don't like the Lakon cockpits in 2D due to the basic flat dashboard, but they are amazing in VR with the super wide view with glass everywhere. I also love the spaceport and planet detail. I noticed the planet textures are a bit low-res in 2D but because the Rift is lower in resolution itself you don't really notice this as much, which is really great. I think this is a big improvement point in the current beta anyway.

No that's definitely disabled!! Gradual motion shifts not initiated by the user are extremely sickening with the rift so it would not be playable if this hadn't been disabled.

The 'Jumps' I'm seeing are not so bad in terms of motion sickness but they are just a bit disconcerting. It breaks immersion (by realising you're not in this cool spaceship)

I have to say though that my system is a bit slow for the rift and it constantly reminds me that I'm not meeting specs (I have a GTX970 but my CPU is one generation older than the one they require). Perhaps that is the reason.
