I will keep bringing this up after every expansion is released. Sorry to be annoying but....

Even the 1984 original allowed you to save a comander and play a new one then go back to your old save. I had a trader and a pirate back then, new technologoy is not letting me do this...

I am not as cynical as many in this thread thinking this is just a cash grab.

I think it is just something that has been pushed back on the devleopment time scale. FD from this thread see that there are many players that care about this.

The assumption is that when you roll a new commander it is a totally different character that has no money and no access to stuff that your other character has. This is usually how things work in other multiplayer games. If I roll a new novice commander he starts off with nada. No jumping into a python...until he earns the money for it. And so, no unbalance.
You are missing his point. That is exactly what they want, to switch from a pilot out in the black to another cmdr back at home base with full access to the account.

Yup - thought as much - you're unable to "free your mind" and realise that a 2nd commander slot would be a different person.

One minute person A is deep in space .. then when you fancy something different and switch person B is back in the bubble.

Has NOTHING to do with "immersion" .. unless of course you can't separate and create two people in your mind in which case you're right, I'm sorry, people can't magically transport to the other side of the galaxy and if ever implemented you best stick with the 1 commander.

<shrug>

Glad you can use more than a couple of words, cmdr Liqua ;)

I like to actually immerse myself. You know, that warm fuzzy feeling when you RP your way out of reality and into the shoes of your CMDR. And if I am going to be a CMDR in a DBX out at Sag A*, I want to actually feel like I'm stuck out in deep space.

Now if you'd noticed from my comments, I'm not putting immersion forward as a reason not to implement it - you've just picked out the buzzword and deliberately used it to be confrontational. I actually like the idea, my preferences on immersion aside. On the other hand, if you keep up with FDs update/patch notes and posts on development, you'll see they put a fair bit of work into fixing issues that the community is currently going nuts over. Maybe in a further release/patch we'll see this drop in, but for the value for money I get from Elite, really not gonna hammer at FD for not squeezing it in already.

I think you should wipe. Start fresh with all the wisdom and experience that goes with it. Its hard and it feels wierd but a "soft" reset won't do it.

Do it. Let your self go. Step into the void. Your time was never wasted. You have memory and experience and that won't be wiped, and your starting game will see the rewards!

Reset-aholism is real my friend. It exists and it affects us all. If you need support, I'm here for you.

So what you're saying is that FD is cynically trying to bleed their players for more money. You know what, I'm just going to quote myself here.

Just to reiterate, if this is FD's corporate culture, then FD is as a company and I will do everything in my power to get people to avoid this company like the plague because they do not deserve business if that is how they treat their customers.

Knock it off, and then knock it off a second time. Tell me a single game that is as unique as Elite which charges such a considerably low fee for the game, less for a year's worth of updates than CoD charges for each three multiplayer map release, and has no in game content other than appearance locked by money, and then....nah. You still wouldn't have grounds to continue the entitlement whining.

"I can't afford it" is not a compelling argument as to why something should be free.

OMFG are you for real? 25 quid is basically my shopping budget to eat and STAY ALIVE, jesus some people have more money than sense. And it's not as if people are asking for the entire game to be free is it? Common sense dude.

You should only be able to configure your controls once. After that, you have to buy a new copy. The majority of Elite fans would be in favor of this, especially the ones that post in these forums. Money is basically free anyway, so what's the big deal? Don't you have lots and lots of money, like I do? You'd have to be some kind of a loser to not have lots and lots of money.

Honestly you should have to buy a new copy of the game every time you die, but some people are such whining babies that they can't stand the idea of a game with actual consequences in it. Typical entitled instant-gratification Call of Duty fast-food gamers. They're probably poor, too.

It's also a huge missed opportunity that FDev allow you to toggle all of the different voice/music/soundFX settings individually for free, when I'm sure most people would be delighted to pay for them as DLC. I mean, it's not like we *need* the ship's voice to tell us when FA is toggled on and off. Sure it's nice to have, but nobody *needs* it; and if it's so important to you then you should be willing to open your wallet and help fund the development of this amazing game!

After all, these things require developer resources. Did you know that making videogames is really, really hard, costly, and that every feature is basically impossible to implement? I know this, because I'm smart; which is probably why I have so much money. If you don't have a lot of money, you're probably not very smart; and you shouldn't be playing videogames anyway; you should be out there bettering yourself so that you can one day be more like me!

TL;DR: entitled gamers need to stop whining about "basic features that all other games have," and instead they should GIT GUD at having disposable income to pay for multiple accounts.

Spot on

bit fed up of having to adapt him (His OP 'Commander') to every new update.

Well ........ if we had CARRIERS in the game , you could have THREE ships moving about with you AND pilot, anyone of those ships to play whatever role/mission you wanted..that suites that ship and the Commander of that ship..

FREEDOM is a procedural universe......what next ...legs !!

Something that was in the original design should also not be charged for.

That's kind of absurd. Very absurd.

WHERE IS MY FREE LENSLOK, ED?! YOU COULD GIVE ME ONE THIRTY YEARS AGO, I DEMAND YOU PROVIDE ONE NOW! [haha]

- - - - - Additional Content Posted / Auto Merge - - - - -

And your reasons against a qulaity of life improvement that would help everyone enjoy the game?

My reasons are that you're being unreasonable. I also think it's pretty unreasonable to have read a thread full of disagreement and then state 'I think we're all in agreement with me'!

-repped

If you want to dock your ship, pull out the credit card for a microtransaction. Cha-ching! Enter a permit system? Cha-ching! Fuel and bullets, new ships, hyperjumps, ...microtransactions, baby...cha-ching!!!!!!

:)

Except it's not a microtransaction system at all and that comparison doesn't make any sense.

Here's a better one:

In a Free Market and capitalist economy, people want something that FD are making money on for free. And they would like them to devote several hundred hours of coding time towards giving them that free thing. They are loudly stating how mercurial they are as customers and they might just walk off at any time anyway, illustrating that they're maybe not the best of customers to bend over for anyway.

I understand that there are many players who would like to have extra character slots.

What I haven't seen is a compelling reason why FD should spend time money and effort on developing this feature. What does FD, a profit driven business, gain by doing this?

Just look at the thread title: "I will keep bringing this up after every expansion is released. Sorry to be annoying but...." The OP is still committed to buying extra expansions. Not developing this extra feature is not going to affect the income they get. In fact it would probably negatively effect their income. FD are quite rightly putting their limited development effort in to developing those game features that they think will keep the business running and make a profit. There is nothing cynical in this: It's how businesses' work. The owners and investors want a profit. The employees want to keep their jobs and be able to pay the bills and feed their families.

Those players who really want extra characters and can justify the cost are already buying extra copies of the game. I'm sorry if you can't afford to this, but that's life. We live in a world of inequality. If anything those players with enough disposable income to buy extra copies and frivolous paint jobs help generate extra income for development that benefits all the players.

Extra character slots might be nice to have. But if it adversely affects the financial health of the game then FD will not do it.

Strawman.

edit: Actually, I take that back. A whole field of strawmen.

Between posts like this and all the folks who clamored for being punched in the gonads by the Engineer-equipped new AI and calling it "fun", I'm beginning to be convinced that many Elite enthusiasts (or just Britons in general) are masochists at heart.

Look, there's no reason you can't kick around in a stock Sidewinder awhile for the nostalgic feel. Reputation with factions or pilot rank really doesn't affect running around with 2 pulses lasers, 4t cargo, and an E-rated FSD all that much.

Frontier oughtn't need to hold your hand & guide you to doing whatever you want, any more than they held your hand up to this point. Really this is quite silly in a game where you are free to do anything.

edit: And if your concern is roleplaying good guy vs bad guy, then I say be more creative: Get a touch of "space madness" for a week or two, deciding that raiding and killing innocent traders is your path to enlightment, only to have your sanity restored after your CMDR wakes up in a station after losing his ship once the local authorities finally caught up to him, whereupon he embarks on a journey to restore his good name to what it once was.

That's just one example I tossed up with about two minutes of thought, surely you can figure something out yourselves!

It would be good if they introduced a micro transaction where you could pay for an extra character. I reckon they would still make money if they did as players are more likely to pay 2-3 quid for an extra slot or two if they hit a wall on their main one.

Players at that point are less likely to want to reset their main CMDR (because of the effort it took them to get there) but also won't want to have to pay for another full game + season packs. So will simply stop playing altogether and a lost player is lost income for the company.

They should introduce a subscription system that will give you access to extra slots and possibly coins to spend in a market - similar to most other MMO's. That plus allowing all users to purchase some (not all) of the engineers mods would probably curb a lot of the arguments over how 1.6 players are at a disadvantage to those of us with 2.1.
