The real equivalent would be for President Kennedy to declare his ambition to land on the Moon by the end of the decade, and be no further than drawing really cool pictures of astronauts and space ships in 1984. Cape Kennedy would be a World of Tomorrow theme park. Russia would have been to the Moon several times, and it would be harder and harder to attract further funding to get the USA there too. They would say actually we are going to Mars. I would hope they get there

It is quite possible that we will have the first stages of a colony in Mars well underway before CR manages to wake his Frankenstein's monster:

Why not? It's perfectly valid. Pretty much what Vasious said.

The risks are many. Not enough money to fund the project, or too small a niche market to justify the game, to name a couple. There are real reasons why major publishers got out of the business of space sims.

They absolutely are. Bashing the attempt (whether successful or not) to realistically model the effects of the thrusters as a means to control the ships is a favourite pastime here. The attempt to merge a Space Sim with an FPS and an MMORPG is another new frontier that many here wish they would leave for later. How many times have you read or made the argument that you just want Squadron 42? What the original pitch was.

Except it isn't a new frontier, Star trek online did it years ago.

The UI looks way to cluttered. On the other hand this is the first video that make the game look like it could be enjoyable to play, it just a shame the UI gets in the way of viewing the environment.
Yeah agreed - that's the first video I've seen of it looking like a game at all rather than a school project with nicer graphics - but it's still insanely clunky.

The play feels pre-bioshock levels of involvement, everyone's still just running around everywhere in a big gankfest.

Tbh considering their claimed readiness for Sq42 I'd hope to be seeing long chaining missions and large numbers of impressive systems to visit by now even if large areas are roped off for 'story' - this is kinda scarily backwards.

CR says it's all new and amazing so it must be!

I'm pretty sure we heard the same thing for each WC related release before once more it was just flat bitmaps or the slowest 3d rendering known to man :(

it's still sad. I want sq42 to be great, i'd love a concentrated space-flight-story-fight-thing but it just feels further away all the time now

Sorry if I'm being dense, but does this mean that SC won't have any form of head-tracking?

I'd be hugely disappointed if this is the case, as having tried it with the lovely (aka cheap) EDTracker, I couldn't imagine being without it.

I appreciate it may still be too early to say, but I'd sort of assume that, if it's coming, it's something they'd plug in early.

I have similar fears for NMS too, although then Sean has hinted heavily that VR is on their radar, so I'm still keeping my fingers crossed (for both games).

EDIT - sorry I was being a bit previous, I've read a bit further in, and the assumption is that SC will probably have headtracking - PHEW! :D

Assuming anything in game development is a dangerous gambit. Until CIG state explicity that headtrack is going to be reintroduced with patch x on schedule y it is not advisable to dream. They will probably have a few new ships to sell soon though!

WEll this thing popped up : https://www.reddit.com/r/Starcitizen_trades/comments/4mmg4y/psa_cigs_blacklist_categorization/

Have you been categorised?

Seems a bit unprofessional.

Assuming it doesn't turn out to be a spoof, how long before it's patiently explained to us in condescending tones;

"High maintenance actually means provide this highly valuable customer the highest level of maintenance we can make available!"

I guess we have to wait for confirmation from someone not considered a smart/goon puppet..

ETA - I'm veering towards spoof at the moment 1130 BST :D

Ouch that isn't great. Reminds me of nurses getting into trouble for putting secret codes on patients charts like Bundy... but unfortunately not dead yet...

Would be fun to see how they explained away Goon and Snowflake!

I think this is the case in a nut shell,

CIG have yet to reap the rewards for all those years of banging on about how they will be better than any other game that ever existed. They could of course silence everyone by doing all those things - but right now that doesn't look very likely.

That is actually my main irritation towards CIG and how they "promote" the project. First they go out an mock everyone and his dog, explaining how super advanced they are doing it. Then
they fail repeatably in all the goals they setup for themselves.

I clearly remember posts like; ED is boring, PG is boring SC will be so much more. Seen one seen them all, we will hand craft it all. To we have PG tech
that you haven't seen before ever! That of course will provoke an answer like "Oh really?".

They better show something we haven't seen before, not in I:, not in ED, not in Outerra or any other SIM/ game out there.

Only time will tell.

Scope, yes we know the scope of SC it will be larger and better than everything else out there because CR. [where is it]

However those who actually care to check, will see that games like ED made a huge scope list in 2012, the game was already shaped in the heads of the developers, and we are now seeing these mechanics being implemented slowly and steady, without all the fanfare and drum beating.

http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

That is why we are very very critical towards the projects and CIG and a developer.

I see this as another cut feature on the way to the minimum viable product (MVP). Also just like VR it doesn't work well with the interactive cut-scenes. You can't really have head-tracking in a movie - where camera work is important.

SC will probably have everything and the kitchen sink*). More probably it won't, as the actual evidence suggests.

*) until the money is in Crobert's pockets.

As a TrackIR owner I'm not really concerned, as I have no money in SC. I might buy the finished product, if it ever appears and properly supports head tracking. And I might skip it otherwise. A space sim without head tracking is a throwback into the 1990s with static 2D cockpits occupying 80 % of the screen.

According to plan Squadron 42 is going to take place inside a single star system.

Agreed, but then my cheeky assumption was already premised on the even cheekier assumption - that SC gets released in a state such that I want to play it... :D

...According to plan Squadron 42 is going to take place inside a single star system.

Really? Won't this put SQ42 squarely toe-to-toe with Call of Duty Infinite Warfare?

Not sure that's a fight I'd pick to be honest...

Quite simple: Once "Goons", "Derek Smart" and "Escapist reader" appears, it's of course completely faked.

That's how you damage control leaks professionally nowadays: You create a whole bunch of fakes and drown the actual evidence in it. Later on you "reveal" your own fakes using the flaws you built into them yourself to completely discredit the original whistle blower.

Thats very unlikely to be a spoof, Brown Hornet is an early backer and one thing he never does in his posts is joke around. He also mentioned this when challenged in the reddit thread http://imgur.com/1GJd3AS . Look at the fourth paragraph of the kickstarter, it absolutely states every single ship we sell over the next 48 hours will 'never' be sold again. Mr Hornet complained about this and got marked a 'difficult customer' . This is where the problems started, I mean what is it if its not pure rotten lies? LTI was another one that was reintroduced after saying the complete opposite, controller agnosticism was a bait and switch with zero-order gimbal controls despite backers being assured that wouldn't happen. Star-marine ready in weeks?

How could you believe anything they say at this point, I know I don't. I would respect them if they stopped selling ships and said we have raised enough money until launch and are targeting such and such a date for MVP. There is currently no scheduled release date for a game thats 2 years late! Here is feedback on 2.4 from a regular tester on why 2.4 is nowhere near ready for backers even for alpha testing.

https://www.twitch.tv/malogos9/v/70427493

From a 2 hour playthrough and heres the list of issues:

- 16 fps (worse in dogfights)
- Rubberbanding
- Walking through walls
- Invisible spawning
- NPCs bog down server and spawn x4 at each Comm Array
- Spawning into a wall
- Bugged out FPS weapons

As evidenced in the latest monthly studio report
"However, the most exciting thing this month was the privilege of an early look at preliminary large scale solar systems with procedural planets, going from space, to atmosphere, and eventually landing on the ground. At this point the terrain is visually pretty sparse looking, but this early on, the excitement is about the technology itself. There’s nothing quite like flying through and around canyons in an M50!"
