The Oculus Rift CV1 General Discussion Thread

HAve you tried War thunder.

I have it installed and tried in the dk2. I remember finding it pretty pointless because i was trying to target a bunch of pixels in the distance at the time. So yeah sounds like a good idea to test CV1 with that and see if i see an improvement. Will have a go with PD settings once ive settled in too :)

Ok I dont really know where to put this one so I'll start here. I have just received my Oculus Rift (YAY!). I have set it up and have successfully navigated the home area and tried a few demo's. I then went onto try SteamVR which is where Elite resides and I use a steam controller with the rift as it doesnt recognise the remote. going into the Elite page in SteamVR and it wants to reconfigure my controller because it now see's the steam controller so I try to cancel it. I then launch ED and going into the game it seems there are now conflicts between the steam controller and my X52 HOTAS so much so that nothing controls the galaxy map and so I have to alt, f4 to close the game if I go into the galaxy map.

I played around a little to try to resolve this conflict to no avail. Anyone else come across this one and managed to resolve it?

Other than that.. DAMN it looks awesome! I found myself staring at the fabric of the chair and the metal frame of the cockpit for a while (sad I know)...

Just don't use the steam controller. Why do you need it? Use your mouse and keyboard to navigate to Steam and launch elite.

Hi BlackSpaceCowboy. I did try that but if I dont start the steam controller. When I start SteamVR I'm just presented with an empty room and nothing seems to open the Steam menu? (I may be missing something here...)

To be honest if I could get the controls to work as they were without Oculus that would be perfect. I.E X52 HOTAS for everything and mouse/gamekeyboard for the galaxy map.

Ooh just to add. When I didnt have the stream controller on, the HOTAS was also manipulating the Steam menu simultaneously whilst flying in elite... which was really annoying... I'm sure this wont take long to resolve just wondering if anyone else has experienced controller conflicts and has resolved them to save me some time :p

Don't start SteamVR. You don't need it. Also, be sure you have "Unknown Sources" checked in Oculus Home, settings, general.

I received my CV1 on Monday and had no issues installing everything. I downloaded Elite Dangerous from the Oculus store instead of using the steam version. First off let me say that I've been playing video games for a long time and I was getting a bit bored with Elite Dangerous until I put on the CV1 and was blown away at everything. The ASP Explorer is huge and my 23" monitor didn't do it justice. I've seen people complain about the resolution of the CV1 and yes I'm a big fan of sharp images but one thing I didn't realize was how much more immersive it is with the CV1. I am now one of those people who states once you go VR you won't go back. I would like to add that Frontier Development has done an outstanding job with the VR version of Elite Dangerous. I don't usually post much as you can tell by the number of posts I have, but this is something I had to share.

I totally agree. They've done a great job. What's especially good is that ED runs really. In most games pixel density 1.5 would cripple framrates but it's possible in ED.

Here is my experience:

If I start SteamVR and put on the Oculus, I'm just inside a big blank white room and I can see where the motion camera is. If I turn on the XBOX controller and hit the "back" button (the left button on the middle of the controller), then the Steam VR menu comes up and I could start Elite from there. I don't have a steam controller, so I don't know about using that.

However, I now start Elite through steam without the XBOX controller at all. I just start Elite from my library page (not a link, and not through a right-click menu) and it asks if I start to Play elite dangerous or start it in SteamVR. If I choose to start in SteamVR, then that's all I have to do. It takes a bit, but eventually it all comes up inside the Rift and I'm ready to go.

Hope that helps.

And yes, I'm controlling everything with my X52 inside the game and it's awesome. I did most of the setup in the game.

Try everything free in Oculus home (duh). I was especially taken with the Mythos of the World Axis demo. Shows some of what is really possible in a game designed for VR.
When first trying Elite, I recommend you do the training missions (once you're done just staring at the Eagle in the hanger). There's one in particular for VR and it does a good job of showing off.

If you want to impress people with VR try out the cinematic demo "Showdown". This is especially for guy's the killer demo and make understand what VR actually will be in the future.

Here a question - is it possible to deactivate the automatic pop-up for the left and right windows once you look into this direction? As I am using the joystick activation of both panels I don't need those.

I believe it is possible. When I still had my DK2 (which I gave away when I ordered CV1) I used to press Shift when I did not want to have those side panels pop up. I can't remember what that key was mapped to, but since you asked if it is possible, I thought I'd answer that part. Someone else will probably tell the actual mapping and such. :)

Yes, in the Control options there are a whole bunch of "looking at XYZ panel" options that you can set to "Does nothing".

Blown Away!!

Interested to hear how you get on. Are you a complete VR newbie? If so would hope you'll be blown away, even with the flaws with the current generation.

Yes I'm a complete VR newbie, bought the Rift in blind faith, not even a demo. And yes, I've been blown away both by ED and the VR experience in the various demos :D:D

I think my WOW! moment came in the Dreamdeck demos when the huge dinosaur is right in front of you. I couldn't stop laughing/smiling/swearing! It just feels so real. I am actually IN my ASP cockpit. I AM IN THE COCKPIT! My 9 year old just kept walking around the cockpit of his Viper saying "this is so cool!". It's the sense of scale and perspective that really makes it a significantly more immersive experience than a monitor ever can be. I can now appreciate what DK1/2 owners here meant when they typed that many times over.

Given the amount of technology and the experience it provides my conclusion is that £499 is a good price point - certainly not a bargain but not overly expensive either (that opinion might change depending on the price of Touch). I've not been impressed with the way Oculus have handled things from a consumer perspective but I've forgotten all about that now.

  • glare/god-rays - the thing I was dreading the most turned out to be not much of an issue - for me they are only significant when in the menus or the spinning ship
  • I don't need to wear my glasses - result! I just need to remember to take them off before I put on the Rift :)
  • resolution - for me this is the biggest issue by far. It was not totally unexpected. But coming from a 34" 3440x1440 IPS monitor (with a Super Sharpness setting!) at Ultra the loss of sharpness is huge. The biggest issues for me are the fuzzy starfield and that ships in the mid-distance are blurry. I still intend to play sometimes using my monitor because reasons and I think I'll need to just to get my "sharpness fix"
  • aliasing and shimmer. This is pretty bad on default settings/VR High. Currently messing around with the debug tool and the graphics options to find the sweet spot between image quality and FPS
  • clarity of text - linked to above of course. Currently messing around with HUD colours - am I the only player that actually likes the default colours? :)
  • getting occasional white flashes when I move my head left/right (and maybe other times) like someone is pointing a camera flash in my face - need to try a few things here like running setup again
  • the cable - as I expected the cable is a bit of nuisance. OK I'm a fussy bar steward. Will sort it. These are pretty good and I've used my last one to stick the cable to the side of my desk which has helped, might get some more to stick to the chair. Wireless VR can't get here fast enough
  • why is the movement of the cursor in the maps (particularly the System map) so slow compared to when on a monitor?
  • the Xbox gamepad was an absolute pig to install (Win7) - I had issues when I bought a cheap 360 wireless receiver off ebay - didn't expect it with an official Microsoft product
I have a bit of a usability issue switching between Rift and monitor:

  • even if the Rift is in standby (LED is orange) and Oculus app is not running, the Oculus app starts when I click Play in the ED Launcher - if I want to play on the monitor am I going to have to go into ED in the Rift, unset the "HMD Speakers" option , take off the Rift, switch to full screen, set the resolution and Hz back every time? Or will I have to unplug the Rift every time (which I would rather avoid)?
  • have to switch the Windows default audio device each time - see this thread
  • in the Rift I like the side HUD panels to open when I look to the side but in the monitor I like to use the controls (even with head-tracking I prefered this) - I might try setting up two separate binds files
  • #firstworldproblems eh? ;)
Any tips to avoid/get rid of Riftface? So that the wife doesn't realise how long I've been playing? ;)

A couple of things I'm wondering about and haven't had time to test so I might as well ask here:
- does the resolution of the mirror window impact performance?
- do the settings applied in AMD Radeon Settings affect the image quality or performance in any way?

Oh, nearly forgot: motion sickness - I knew I would get it - I get nauseous just being a passenger in my own car (or is it the wife's driving?). It's mild but it's there. As long as I think to myself "I am moving with the ship" or some such nonsense I'm ok. I feel lightheaded for about 10 mins after playing. I'll get used to it. But I won't be driving the SRV for a while :)

I do not get motion sickness so quickly, but driving SRV on a hilly planet totally kills me. But now and then I chose a "flat" planet and enjoy the driving and the view and the details on your SRV you never thought your little car has it. Guess you know that there are some VR configuration in Elite you have to activate/deactivate, which helps to keep potential motion sickness on a certain minimum?

Great stuff! I'm enjoying my CV1 - had a great time in Ethan Carter and American Truck Simulator yesterday. Back to ED soon and start getting used to the god rays.

i had my 1st ever "sniff" of clammyness in ED in VR over the weekend (the clammy feeling is the early warning sign of VR sickness, ignore at your peril.

I was on a VERY bumpy surface, however fortunately i just put on that maintain level horizon or what ever it is and it sorted me out a treat.

i will still use the default for normal play, but if it gets too much for me at least that is a cure.

Hey folks, came across this thread while trying to find information about unlocking the resolution for VR. I have a Founders 1080 running on an i7 3770, 16gb RAM, and rocking a Rift.

I currently have super sampling up to 2 but will be dropping it down to 1.5 tonight. I have not noticed any frame rate loss at all, just artificating. The 1080 is a monster and is handling VR very well. Supersampling at 2x will cause occasional "flashing" and artifacting, which is a little disruptive.

As far as other VR settings, I believe I have everything on High. I can check tonight, but I'm really just waiting on Frontier to unlock the VR res to be above 720p.

The immersion experience has been really wonderful so far, but the game does not look crisp enough. I thought I could ignore it but its a very hard game to lose visual clarity on, since you're constantly focusing on distant objects. No regrets here, but I want Frontier to give me a little more control over my experience.

Project CARS on the other hand looks INCREDIBLE. I was so impressed. Also got Edge of Nowhere. 3rd person games execute very well in VR.

So I've read through dozens of posts with good advice on the setup of the Rift today. One thing I never saw mentioned that isn't sitting right with me are the stations which seem to be too sparkly and bright, way moreso than with a monitor making the approach to the letter box almost painful. Is this down to a particular setting anyone can think of?

Are you suggesting that FD are holding something back on the graphics front? I've just been assuming it's a combination of the resolution of the Rift magnified through the lenses and the huge scale of ED (i.e. small objects far away). Plus lots of straight lines (let's be honest the AA in ED has never been great even in 2D). So I don't know if there's anything they can do, but I certainly hope there is. After a week in the Rift, the novelty (of ED in VR) is wearing off and I now find that I'm regularly adjusting the headset in case it improves the clarity of both the text and the graphics (it rarely does).

Have you tried messing with the Gamma setting (i.e. turning it down)? Are these stations that are facing a star? Depending on what you mean by 'sparkly' this could be caused by shimmering of straight edges - increasing the AA might help with that.
