As I only stumbled over this thread like a day or 2 ago, some things are quite confusing, even after reading the front page.
So according to MB the purpose of the UA is it's transmission.
The UA points to Merope.
Could it transmit data to Merope? And who would be the receiver?
The UA have been found distributed in an sphere like shell. Does this shell expand? Did they start form somewhere and are skimming the galaxy looking for something?
It was said that the UP has a different purpose.
But what is it?
Am I correct from what I read here that allmost all UPs have been found in Ross 47, G 99-49?
Why are they there? In a completely different location to Merope, much closer to Sol? This seems to be an important point!
Are all UPs currently found in convoys?
From where do these convoys (I guess it's the Feds?) get the UPs?

a free floating UP in the existing UA bubble would be a interesting change and course of direction
Not that I'm aware of. At least not on this thread.

How so? That would literally be the exact same direction as the UA mystery, not a single thing would change. Free floating ua were first found inside the UA shell.

The first free floating UA were found in Systems very close to Merope (before that, only convoys in the Bubble).
- After 1.4, they "moved" to the current shell, 135-150ly from Merope, and they are there since then.
- You are correct, but only because people are looking there as I found the first convoy in Ross 47. And being them extremely rare...
- UP are being found close to sol because they are transported by convoys: it was the same with the UA, before we found the free floater ones. So nothing new.
The other questions have no answer.

Who decides what is too long? This has only been a few weeks. I remember getting stuck on singular puzzles in old classic games for a month and there was comparatively sod all else to do in those games!
The joy of all this is it's such a group effort - those of us light years away or out of the pilots seat for a while can still enjoy it and still contribute and take part - what other game offers that?!?
Were it all in-game this'd be easy. First person to find it would cycle through the set of available tools and solve it tada game over, everyone whinging once more about lack of content - I love it that this stuff is hard - I love it that I wouldn't have known where to start with the wireframe decode of the UA signal - I get a kick out of feeling respect for the people who put in the hours of effort hunting down the UP's or doing the research. It's all so much more than some flying around and shooting and that's just great

So this would point in the direction, that if there are "free" UPs, we just haven't found the right location yet, or are not looking for the right signal (USS).
Would be a big step forward to find out where these UPs are coming from.
Maybe the Feds can drop a hint.

Not versatile, but real-time. Might not be able to replicate one-off sounds, though. You could enable your "stereo mix" and record it.
