Yeah nothing here either. I suspect the explanation that a player minor faction has set that description may be the truth. Such a shame, felt quite exhilarating for a moment there. Related to UPs or not I kinda just hoped a system with that description would actually have something unusual to see.
According to INARA, the only faction there Imperial Party, is npc, and has no player factions.

Question. Is there a way to tell if a planet has Barnacles on the surface without driving around on the off chance of finding one?

Hey all,

Anyone know if we have or if its possible to produce a topographical map of a planet in Elite? namely Merope 5c?

I am capable of creating surface maps at 8 gigapixels. It would take several years and a dedicated team to survey all of Merope 5c with any kind of detail. My survey photos are taken from 8kilometers up. I am able to overlay coordinates as well, although they may not be as exact as the 4 decimal places Elite can achieve. It's a painstaking process.

Hello CMDRs. I have performed a 6 minute recording of an Unknown Probe floating in deep space in Merope. This is not a free floater.

Greetings from the Children of Raxxla.

EDIT: There was a problem with the previous audio only file upload. Fixed it now.

This is great, certainly won't hurt to have a fresh clean full loop of it in space.

So like this?

-|- = arc
-|| = ring
|-- = spike
--| = radial

-|- arc
-|- arc
||- ring-
-|| ring+
--| rad
|-| ? (spikes or rad?)
|-- spikes
||- ring-
-|| ring+
--| rad
--| rad
-|- arc
-|| ring+
-|- arc
||- ring-
|-- spikes
--| rad
--| rad
- ?

I like this approach. If the purrs encode a bit stream, it's very reasonable to think mapping either the symbols from the spectograph onto it, or some logical interpretation of what the symbols might symbolize onto it, could be how this is all meant to fit together.

Something else to consider is whether the information in the purr stream is meant to be read out linearly, or whether it's a matrix correctly shown in NxN dimensions.

On the downside, this seems very much like the morse encoding of ship images by the UA, so maybe FD wouldn't repeat themselves so directly, but might be worth exploring how to quickly check plotting various dimensions of the purr datastream (with the symbols mapped onto the individual 3 bit 'words'.

Greetings,

Has anyone else noticed that the sphere dissected by a grid looks exactly like the mission marker that appears on the navigation sidebar? Likewise it looks exactly like the compass that also provides directional input for mission objectives. I suggest that the aliens may have logically deducted a way to communicate with us by using our own symbols as a link first and then super imposed their own atop that. From this deduction we can confer that they may be attempting to communicate a mission objective along with the map rather than a greeting or directions to their home world.

Live long and prosper,

Inara info on that system is quite wrong and out of date.

Imperial party is suspicious though. Any procedurally generated factions, especially simple-named ones have the system name in them. This one doesn't, which is odd.

I thought 'Lurp Shipyards' was a player faction but I could be mistaken.

It is. But cd-86 4 is not their home system, so they couldn't have asked for that description.

Psi octantis is their home system.

I'm pretty sure the UP is a relay. It isn't the collector of the data or the end point. It is a proxy / relay station.

The problem with statements like these is...so what? ;)

You're sure, but where is your proof, evidence or explanation? And even if you're right, what do we do with this information?

People have been 'sure' about a lot of things about the UP for the last two weeks, yet we're still here trying to figure out even a single symbol on the spectogram. Just look at the person who was 'sure' the surface of Merope 5C had encoded drawings and then proceeded to post a screenshot of the shadow of his own ship.

Just had a thought while looking through menus: the UP image has to be changed to logarithmic to go from egg shape to circular, correct? In the ship functions menu, you can change your sensor scale type from logarithmic to linear. While i have no idea how this works in game, have we tried scanning the UP with linear settings? Again, a though .

I can't edit my game file to "see" in rgb 32,97,49 but I imagine if somebody could, the same way we change HUD color, we'd have much clearer images. Or this is the way the UP sees Merope 5C and we need to drop it high above this area for it to gather the image for us.
I apologize for the bad pictures I'm just an average joe with no photoshop skills who saw some lines on the floor.

My GPU is fine, these images ARE there. We've had the key for 2 weeks now. We just weren't looking in the right location

It is a texture glitch, like the one at the south pole that looks like a square. It is caused by stitching. Look elsewhere.

Anyone feel like talking about Meta Alloys?

META-ALLOY image
FxCmpMW.jpg

I feel like we have missed something with them. The galnet articles hint that there are as yet undiscovered uses for them, and I for one would like to find out what they are.

So what facts do we know about meta alloys?

META-ALLOY (in game description) -
Meta-alloys have a complex lattice structure with large internal voids. They are cellular in nature, and formed organically. They are incredibly strong - much stronger than foamed aluminium for example. Many elements form the structure so technically they are alloys, but the composition is different in different parts of the cell walls for strength. They are good thermal insulators, and have a high melting point, but if they are melted they lose all their special properties and become a conventional alloy. They are easily machined, but as yet cannot be manufactured, only found in space. They are associated with recently discovered alien entities nicknamed 'Large Barnacles' by interstellar explorers. These appear to be common in certain parts of space, although no-one is certain why. This material has been heralded as the next step in materials technology. It is ultra-light and stronger and more versatile than most commercially available alloys.

1. Where they are found - Ripe seed spikes, 2 for a healthy barnacle. We can see them easily with our MKI eyeballs but scanning with the SRV will also show when a meta alloy is detected.

Darnielles Progress in Maia. Only place as far as I know that sells them

Federal convoys in merope. They are not currently there, seems as if they are only showing up when the barnacles are producing meta alloy.

2. What do they look like? - As shown in the image above, they are a bright, luminous green with black edges and tips when on the seed spikes. Once they are scooped they go into a cargo canister, and that is how they stay.

The seed spikes have multiple stages of the pods on them, small closed dull pods, larger closed green glowing pods, then the largest open pods with the meta alloy.

The pods have an odd symbol on them, and a bumpy (for lack of a better word) texture.

3. What are the known effects? - So far, the only use discovered is to counter the corrosive effects of the UA in stations.

4. What possible uses/interactions can be safely ruled out? -

Holding meta-alloys does not prevent damage caused by a UA to our ships.

Holding Meta-alloys and being scanned by a UA does not appear to have any effect.

Dumping meta-alloys on planets does not appear to have any effect.

Selling copious amounts of Meta-alloys to stations does not appear to have any effect, except for the aforementioned counter-effect to the UA corrosion.

Taking meta-alloy to different engineer bases does not appear to have any effect.

5. What else can we try using the tools we have in game? - I'm pretty stuck with this personally, which is why I need different opinions and perspectives. Are the hinted at undiscovered uses something a commander can do? Or is it just a hint to something in the future we currently have no control over such as meta-alloy hull, meta-alloy lasers, any meta-alloy engineer blueprints? I tend to lean towards a use we can achieve ourselves in game currently, but it is pure speculation.

The fact they are found on "seed spikes" suggests to me that they are indeed a kind of seed. Those that know me know that all my dreams would come true if they were able to be planted and grow a barnacle ( :D ), but as of writing this I have been unable to achieve this, despite my efforts.

Another thought I have yet to try is that the meta-alloys could be used for barnacle breeding. Take a meta-alloy from barnacle A to barnacle B and scan the seed spike? Many things to try and as yet no indication if it has any effect whatsoever.

In my opinion there is something we can do with these unique items. People have put a lot of research into Unknown artefacts and unknown probes, even the barnacles themselves. But as of yet we have not looked into the meta-alloys all that much.

Below is just a bit of a rant

Professor Palin has been researching these things and has a keen interest in them, which has given us access to the special cargo racks that allow us safe transportation of UA and UP. If he has found out anymore he isn't saying, which is actually a letdown to my personal immersion.

It would be nice if the engineers would have a bit more dialogue or interactions available. I get it, Elvira Marthuk wants me bad, the sexual innuendo is pretty full on haha but although her description says she is extremely interested in all things alien, she doesn't give a care that I have a cargo hold full of meta-alloys and UA's parked in her base. Not even the fact I am rank 5 with her seems to matter, except for a very slight change in dialogue ("my heart races when I see you" and "want me to work on that for you? The module commander..." pfft hehe me giggling like a school kid :) ).

It is very frustrating going there or to palin and reading them say how fond they are of me, knowing they have key information but not being able to get anything out of them. Surely after all the work I put into getting in their good graces earns more than an "attaboy"? Even if it were just like a tip-off mission but from the engineers, it would really help flesh out the lore and still requires effort to get to the stage where they would give them out.

Ok, so who has any ideas or theories about meta-alloys? And who thinks we should go lay down a siege on Palin research centre until he comes clean on what he knows?

I'm sorry but you all are just not looking hard enough. My ships shadow was in the picture because I was inverted. If someone actually took the time to go see for themselves they'd see the images too. Instead we're just sitting here shooting down each other's theories.

With this attitude, people who may have actual valuable information may not want to come forward. Anyways please continue trying to solve this mystery by shutting everyone else's down.

This is what you see when you fly from Merope to Merope 5. This has been proposed already but none have lined it up like this. It's always been within the Merope 5 perimeter.

So if you line up the clues the UA points to the star. Then from the star you point somewhere the UP says which points at Merope 5. So you take the UP there to Merope 5 and it tells you which specific moon it is on.

I propose it's just a map from the star to the planet. The numbers and symbols give more detail.

Line up Merope 5 like this at 138 degrees

S5k7iGh.png

Then rotate 90 degrees counter clockwise. (step 2) You can see the rings then line up at step 3.

Step 4 I'm not sure but I THINK if you put the the protractor on square then to 138 degrees then you rotate it 90 degrees you should come up with a position of about 8 degrees latitude -20 longitude. I'll need to get a protractor to confirm

Make it 10 degrees and 18 degrees (unknown which one would be lat long or negative positive) I think if both sides if they were on a chart I think they'd both be negative right?

I'm going to go check it out.

Lookes good, but we would still need to find out what the top two quadrants mean. As for the grid representing space, the way its laid out makes tons of sense ( no converging latitude or longitude lines.

AH HAH!!!

BREAKTHROUGH!

This is a preliminary heads up - this isn't finished yet. There is an encoded voice within the transmission. And, when im finished it should be quite clear.

Whats happening here then? First off. the first 1.5 seconds of static are taken as a marker. (Ive chucked everything before that) then Ive divided that into thirds to get 0.5 seconds.

The next bit is the fun part. ORIGINALLY, 7 seconds in corresponded to the centre of the circle. After I split up all the track, I then multitracked it. I shifted the arrow thingy with bar on end to line up with the centre on the left side.

I then shifted the right hand side ((-|| to correspond with the centre. The left side I jacked up 70% in pitch and the Right 30%...

And WALLAH! A voice saying "Help me out of here"

Heres the clean version:

Naturally im hearing things again eh? What I realized here is that its like a puzzle all mixed up. When you overlay one sample on the other correctly, they reinforce the signal.

That is a stretch. I cannot hear the words you claim.

It seems you are much better at looking than we are. Please keep looking then. Maybe you'll be the first to make a breakthrough.
