Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

One thing I've learned from gaming in general ALWAYS have low expectations of any release.
Never bought into the NMS hype.
I've preordered the game simply because it looks like an enjoyable fun diversion from the usual sci-fi fare.
If it turns out to be not my thing after playing and I lose interest that's fine I'll move onto something else.

To be fair, that's an event with an incredibly low trigger threshold. ;) Personally I'm still looking forward to playing it when released for the PC, I guess it's all down to expectation as with all things.

Quite true, quite true...

And as the unrealistic expectation balloon deflates we have a winner!

tl;dr NMS is as wide as an ocean with the depth of a puddle.

I spent 1.5 hours in the game last night and have to say I enjoyed every minute of it.

The atmosphere is incredible, they have done an amazing job as far as that is concerned, it is incredibly immersive, it reminded me of certain films, like 'The red planet', Pitch black' or 'The Martian', the sound did an amazing job of making me feel edgey, I can see now why they have set the FOV as it is, because I found myself several times stopping what I was doing and spinning around, convinced there was something behind me.

My first planet is an eerie place, rocky with lots of canyons and deep gulleys, no signs of life, just rock formations and some plants.

I managed to get the required bits to fix my ship and so took off to find a resource site that had appeared on my scanner as a 5 minute walk away (I couldnt get to it as there was a deep gulley in the way).

The jetpack by the way is lots of fun to use, I'm looking forward to upgrading it and seeing what it can do, it feels great jumping into gulleys and hitting the jets as you fall.

After flying for a minute or so I noticed some buildings, I landed on the edge of a nearby hole and investigated, inside I met my first lizard like Alien, in exchange for carbon and something else I forget, he tought me a couple of words in his language, I also picked up some new upgrade tech blueprints for my gear.

I did not want to put the controller down at all, but it was 1:30am on a weeknight so reluctantly I had to call it a night, itching to get back on later and explore more of the planet.

Here's a pic of the buildings I discovered.

how refreshing.....im looking forward to exploring this strange new space adventure....and I got 2 weeks off next week to play it (I didn't book it for NMS) to death.
ill either hook up my hotas via x360ce or just use my ps4 pad to play it.....or both....depends how arcade the flight is..

if its afterburner style fun then im going for stick

So, it doesn't seem to be much of a career type space game that Elite is? I mean, can you trade your way to the galaxy centre. Would you really want to spend all your time in NMS mining/pirating and is there mechanics and upgrades to support that kind of gameplay? I get the feeling it's more survive, collect, progress where as ED is choose objective, choose role, choose load out type of game.

If a developer doesn't show multiplayer and shout about it then its not there. It's been one of the most challenging things to develop for ED, SC and other big space games. Implying that there was "minimal chance" of meeting up was an odd thing for Hello games to do and risks them peter monolux-ing the thing. This game looks like a fabulous achievement for a small studio and should produce sequels, why mislead?

Seems that some of us are in the minority.
You see.. There isn't a choice of have one or the other eg; ED or NMS. I can play all the ones I own, plus those I've pledged too and ones I'm yet to own (I have my eye on some).
That is the beauty of being a gamer with an open mind, you don't miss out, you simply play them all, when the mood takes you.
.
I have a reasonable amount of games, not a huge amount. But most are sandbox type and of those, there are a few space games. I don't dismiss any of them and I play them all from time to time. They all entertain in one way or another. Some disappoint or please more than others, some are played more, but all have been bought for a reason. That reason is, on the whole they're all very good at what they do.
.
Sometimes I want a spaceship (sci-fi) sim, so Rogue System comes out. Now and again a more serious look at space, Orbiter or Space Engine (very cost effective ;)). Or perhaps, a general space game that has a little of most things, so perhaps ED or Evochron ('Legacy' now) will come out. Maybe I want to delve into the mechanics of building a space ship plus a little survival, so Space Engineers, KSP, Interstellar Rift or possibly even Empyrion will be the game I play.
Then there is SC, but that is more for the future (at the moment). Also I can go into TOM to see what new things have been introduced there..
And so on.
.
Plus I have Battlescape, Planet Nomads and whatever else I have signed upto (pledged for).
And of course on Friday I have NMS to look forward too, which I am greatly. Mainly because I haven't gone into the hype, I know what to expect and hope to find that. From what I have seen on videos, I think I will find what I expected and what the devs told me I'd get. I tend to read what the devs say rather than get caught up too much in hype. Although I have been guilty of that in the past (a few times ).
.
That is the thing you see, I don't need to just have one or the other. I'm a gamer that loves choice, provided its a sandbox type game, I'm usually happy. Never restrict what you could experience, there are plenty out there that deserve a play.
.
Other than StarForge.. :x

People hyped themselves up soo soo much, uncontrolled hype just ends with massive disappointment, controlled hype is much better.
It's not the consumer's fault, that a product with a huge publisher-backed marketing campaign (including a lot of viral marketing in social media for sure) turned out to be disappointing.

Gladly I didn't took part in that, but completely avoided the entire NMS pre-launch buzz (wasn't easy). Now with a neutral blank slate and almost no knowledge about this game, I watched various gameplay videos. And I'm not impressed at all and I can't find an explanation for the huge price. This while still knowing nothing about what has been promised or what people's fantasies of game were.

One of three things has happened here:

1) The game has multiplayer support, but the two players encountered a bug. If this is the case HG will be quick to point it out.
2) The game never had multiplayer support and Sean's earlier statements were lies.
3) The game was planned to have multiplayer support but it was quietly dropped.

Given HG haven't jumped on this, I don't think it's 1). I really hope it's not 2) because that would be extremely poor form on behalf of both HG and Sean. I'm leaning toward 3) but if so it disappoints me that HG didn't have the collective cojones to own up to it. Having said that, implementing support for players to meet up in-game always struck me as being a lot of work for something that was always intended to be highly unlikely. Even getting to the point where you can see another player's avatar isn't straightforward, never mind the work involved in creating backend lobby/instance code that's robust.

Anyway, regardless of the multiplayer support, nothing I've seen so far really points to this being a £40 game. It's been hyped to oblivion so it'll sell well at that price point, but I think I'll be waiting until it's on sale.

Everything I read about the game said to me that MP was a none issue, why on earth are people expecting it to be there and meaningful?? As a single player sort of chap I'm ECSTATIC that there's no MP in the game, I'm even doing a little jig of joy at all the salty tears of the MP crowd!!

And Horizons sold for £40, luckily I got it for "only" £30, but for me I'd say so far it's been the worst gaming purchase I've made in the past 5 years, Initially landing on the planets was fun, but that wore off after about 3 days.

I am so looking forward to slowly strolling around a colourful planet and chilling out on Friday. :)

So far my experience with NMS is that it micromanages the living crap out of the game experience to the point I don't even want to play. Seriously, to charge up for one (ONE!) hyperspace jump, I'm going through like three nested layers of crafting. For such a crafting-heavy game to have such limited inventory space is downright SATANIC.
Personally, I love the crafting and micromanagment aspect of No Man's Sky. It is obvious that the game has been inspired by Elite, but also by Minecraft. Can't wait to start building my own space freighter and a base in the near future when they add these functions into the game.

And i'm very glad that in No Man's Sky you will be able to actually manage something - a feature that I've always felt was missing in Elite.

To be fair, Hello Games have earned every pinch of salt coming their way - for long time they avoided to reign in on hype, manage expectations. It felt like they want to sell     loads of copies and then go on like "BUSTED". I *don't* think it was their goal, but they clearly dropped a huge ball on PR. Yes, they *didn't* sell multiplayer as part of core experience - that would land them in actual legal trouble - but they *didn't* confirmed nor denied feature set regarding of MP.

As for other gameplay elements it was unavoidable that there would be disappointed people - despite all signs of having strong survival presence being shown in gameplay videos *prior* launch, it seems have surprised lot of people. Do research. Then buy.

I went into this without any info at all, I had watched the trailers and that was about it, this has made it even more fun as I am having to work everything out myself.

The lack of info from Sean Murray was a good move, once you play it you can understand why, it leaves you wondering just what is out there.

This is not a bad product, Ive been gaming since the 80's and know a lemon when I see it, fair enough I need to get deeper into the game, but the quality is there in spades, I can see people playing this for a long time.

I don't care either way, but when the founder and main developer of the company says it's there, then it really should be there. The majority of people complaining that there's no multiplayer are those who feel they've been duped.

"So far" is about all you can say for Horizons given we only have 40% of the content. There's a chance that come the release of ED 2.4 you'll feel it was the best gaming purchase you made. NMS is released as-is, and any future developments will depend solely on whether HG believe it's worth the effort.

As would I, were it at the £20 or £30 price point. :)

What would be the point to build a "base" in a game that's main goal is to reach a distant point (the center of the infinite color cloud)?

So you will judge Horizons on only 20% of it released?

Because people keep asking them for some reason. They are "OK, if that's what you want. You can't still meet others LOL."

If this game doesn't have MP support, I'd be disapointed, but I'd understand. I picked this game up for the SP game play anyway. No no MP is not that big a deal to me.

Today's gaming hype culture has big blame to carry about this. When I just see NMS videos, I see fun little game within vein of Don't Starve, Minecraft and Elite. It is interesting mix which will appeal to a lot of people, I might even pick it up. But Internet will hate it a bit because it is again they build hype around, and it failed to deliver to this hype.
