On top of the world?

If they're so on top of the world, why did they skip E3 at the last minute? Why has their Gamescon booth clearly had all expenses spared? Why are they continually iterating on inconsequential rubbish in their patches (oh, they fixed another door), while major gameplay elements not only remain unimplemented... but show little evidence that they've even been designed?

This announcement better be utterly amazing that's all I can say, because it's getting a bit sad how unimpressive it all is now. It's like watching someone drown in slow motion, waving their hands around and muttering incomprehensibly.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Contrast with the way Chris and Sandi talk about other space games.

More recently perhaps, but my main point was how he politely added in SC and a "when that comes out" while the others all had ETA. It was such a nice way to include them whilst also quietly acknowledging the elephant in the room. I say this in context, as all the others he included eta's.

I know about latency and anyone who thinks that there won't be any latency when trying to play with other people across the world is kidding themselves.

As an aside, a few sources online say that 2-300 ping is noticeable but manageable. According to speedtest.net my ping to London (I'm near Washington, DC) is ~90 while Brisbane is ~228.

As a Kiwi often playing online with Pings like that
300 ping is 0.3 of a second delay.

That is not fun for FPSers, that is whole target sized differenced movement possible in the delay.

High speeds of star ships combat makes it works

"noticeable but manageable" I am sceptical about

[Something about an Australian Server stretch goal mitigating for local players]

So surely you see how easy it is to get well above 300ms with everyone connecting to a central instancing server?

Latencies of well over a second are easily, and inevitably, reachable.

That's more interpretation than fact

I wish you would apply this to your own 'reasoning', which is full of backtracking and twisting of definitions.

e: I personally think tooterfish is looking beyond the literal and understanding the complex background of what he's saying. Who are you to rubbish what he says?

further edit: also what? 300 ping is not manageable in an FPS game at all.

Back in my dial up days I was playing soldier of fortune 2 multiplayer with a ping of 280 on a good day. I could win most of my matches because the server would make it so that I was hopping all over the place to anyone with a faster connection. I don't see that working in a game based on fidelity...

'Hopping all over the place" is more likely down to packet delay variation ('jitter') and/or lost packets than latency as such. With good design, you can work around relatively high latency as long as it is consistent. If it isn't consistent, it adds a whole new layer of complexity.

I was on dial up, so it wasn't consistent at all.

Does anyone know what patch will have the netcode update? Is it the 2.7 jesus patch that will solve all the problems?

A little sneak peak from the Newsletter

Ursa Rover
Off Road and Off World
You caught a glimpse of the Ursa Rover in the Constellation commercial, but this planetside exploration vehicle is getting close to showing you a whole lot more.

And seems like the ship(or at least one of them) of this gamescom will be
ANVIL TERRAPIN
i2Vidmt.png
Old description (may no longer be entirely accurate): A figurative tough nut to crack, the Terrapin is the most heavily armored of the base-priced spacecraft on the market. Originally designed for long-range survey missions in dangerous star systems, the Terrapin’s design philosophy involves wrapping the ship in additional layers of armor and reserving a significant amount of engine power to host the largest shield generator in its class. Terrapins are popular among private miners, with an equipment mount and a small storage hold that can be converted for valuable minerals.

Nice concept art :) Does this mean Planetary Landings will be part of the MVP, or this is content for post-launch?

The Terrapin looks a bit like the AspX from "the other game", which is a well-loved ship :)

The rover looks nice and I like the name.
Will this be sold for real cash as well?

Will there ever be anything that isn't?

I'm almost sure it will be in the MVP.

The terrapin reminded(more or less) me to this:

Terrapin most likely, the rover no idea but is very possible.

1 year later we have again same rover and again cool looking concept art.......still missing some game-play???
