Community Event / Creation Buckyball Racing Club Presents: Glorious Bast-erds (A tribute to the Heroes of Bast)

cheers for tips guys. With advice like this, it's going to be hard to fall back on the excuse of being a "Relative Noob," :p

Following a significant logistical exercise (not remotely helped by Bast being in a state of lockdown) I'm now parked at Bast with both The Wedding Anniversary (Asp Explorer) and the Sans Serif (Imperial Courier) race tuned and ready to rock. I'm currently sat in a local bar writing up the rules for Total Recall 2 and hope to run my first atempt at Glorious Bast-erds tomorrow.

What kind of event is total recall? sounds intriguing.

NOTE: dates awaiting final confirmation.

R. E. Feist chap, Sephrenia's Quest is from Eddings. I do love my books
Cool! Currently we're reading Sapphire Rose as bedtime reading for our toddler (possibly inappropriate, but w/e. I've never read it before, but my wife has introduced me to all his series in the past couple years, since she read them all as a child. Who's R.E. Feist?

Do love a bit of Feist, and have always meant to peruse the pages of Edding's. Just about finished the Worm Ouroboros (Started off as my book for commuting until it became too interesting not to lose a bigger portion of my life to.).
His books all seem to be series, from what I've read. The Belgariad seems to be pretty well-known and classic. Five books though. The Elenium is only three, and seems to be quite good so far. I like how he does fantasy in a semi-serious way, with great dialogue, enough jokes for fun, and while the storylines are epic, never quite taking itself TOO seriously.

Really glad this has been extended. I'm only about half way back from Jaques due to RL. A couple of sessions and i'll be at Hart for a solid weekends racing, heating and speeding!
I do admire your diligence. I considered that CG for about 0.2 s and then ignored it. Does it feel better if I give you a rep?
I feel at this point that was the smarter move. :p I'm halfway home and it's dragging quite a bit. I'm still hopeful I'll make it home in time for an unlimited attempt, but that seems more and more doubtful. I can see why Alot uses Remlok transportation at the end of his Sadge runs.

I would go for the shields. But I land like a brick. Or, sometimes, like a water melon.
[video=youtube;iKDZHuYjrRk]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKDZHuYjrRk[/video]
I wish we could have the option to view a third person replay (preferably slo mo) of our death, a la TF2 or Overwatch.

I don't want to leave Jaques until a) I know if there will be a new CG there and what it will be and realistically b) the mining CG finishes. I'm currently in the top 10% of miners and I am SO bored of mining.
You poor non-bast-erd. I mined 200 tons, decided it wasn't for me and headed home. :p Best of luck though!
I also wonder what top 10% is though, since I'm also in that bracket. Not that I'll ever collect it. :(

Notes:
  • Fireball is way too slow. Doesn't feel right without drive tuning.
  • Crater Creator could be faster aswell. Need to visit Felicity and this time take the right Commodities with me.
  • Crashing into the Toast rack does not increase station entry speed.
  • Don't attempt the Barbeque Challenge with a low emissions power plant.
  • Put shields on Fireball or learn how to dock. Or bring Hart Station's Repair service back online.
  • Try FSD boost. Maybe.
  • Questions: Have you tried bumping off the toast rack as well? This actually works decently in the Cobra to bleed off some excess speed. :D
  • What...happens...to the low emissions power plant?
  • Boost: Not Even Once - Alot (disclaimer, I flagrantly disregard this advice)

I'm probably the last one to say anything against lithobraking, but not being able to replace the shock absorbers on your ship (or is that called 'hull'?) after completing a run without visiting a different station is annoying. Maybe I should just use the remlock-method... :D
It is really fast, but might be more expensive with a kitted-out ship. With the Regulation Cobra it's only 33k :D
I have found though, that frequently I end the race with enough fuel to make the first jump away from Bast, which is really all you need.

But all eyes were on CMDR Cookiehole making his expected entry at the top of the unlimited leaderboard, flying an engineered combination of Crater Creator (iCourier) and Fireball (Hauler) to set an impressive time to beat of 22 minutes and some seconds.
Dang. Props cookiehole. Props.

The guys most impressed were the control tower staff at several stations in the Bast region, who are now considering going on strike after Crater Creator achieved the first Blazing docking speeds of the event. Little Nuk noted that with more than a full shield ring remaining after that docking, he's hoping he might see at least a "Spectacular!" docking before the end.
Great, just great. Are they in the same union as the fueling and repair staff? It's going to be even more fun trying to race without docking privileges. Thanks cookiehole. :p /sarcasm

(This is a lie, Nuk just wants to see ships go boom!)
I knew that was his nerfarious plan!!! He should be happy with me, the Flaming Onionhead Express has gone boom 6 times this race. [knocked out]

This is when Little Nuk noticed that Fat Tony had swapped around Talwin's temperature and speed values from the previous run in an unsporting attempt to avoid cell-cleaning duties. This underhand plan failed and since the highest jump temperature is now CMDR Cookiehole's Toasty level temperature in Fireball, it's really starting to look like Tony's going to lose the bet. Tony's still confident though that someone will be able to push their Hotrod Mk III to it's limit without needing to explode.
I tried Fat Tony! I tried just for you!

After numerous runs all running close to forty five minutes I am just about ready to pull my hair out. Too many interdictions and a slow loading rate for everything (dunno if dodgy frame rate, and waiting close to a minute to open my galaxy map is a game or ISP thing, either way :/
I know that feel man. The past two days I haven't had any new time, due to interdictions, running out of fuel, having a planet drift into the way of my jump, more interdictions, etc. Only thing I've been able to do is set a new heat record. :(
I left powerplay during the Buckybubble on my primary account because of this interdiction , and I wish I could do so on my secondary, does anyone know if it helps much?

Those Pirate "Buckyball Groupies" love to wait by the finish line. Just think of it like the spectators at the Tour de France. :)
Worst groupies EVAR! [down] [mad]

Slow hyperspace jumps are caused by network/server problems, slow SC dropouts by network/instancing and graphics/... loading times, GalMap and SysMap maybe a combination of both.
I've found low graphics settings to help with SC dropout times in most cases with a small difference for stations and a notable one for planets. Might also affect the GalMap, haven't done too much testing on that as my loading times there are mostly ok.
That's so strange that they're all different problems. Also I love that we stretch the game to it's limit and learn about it's construction by racing. I haven't reduced by graphical settings yet, and I'm loathe to because it's running beautifully from an SSD on a 390x, but perhaps if I'm given much trouble I'll give it a try. :(

As pretty much the only difference to your tips I don't really use 75% throttle in SC, but mostly 100% (speed and planned overshooting), <100% (when you're already "too fast"), 0% (when deselecting targets) and 50% (best turn rate). In case of gravity braking the throttle in supercruise has only on (100%, "apply power/try to go faster") and off (<100%, "slow down as quickly as the FSD is permitting").
Huh, I may need to rebind my 75% combo to 50%, good stuff to know. Do you still use that binary 100% and 0% while on final approach? Once I'm within 10Mm I'm tempted to set it to 75% to avoid overshooting.

[woah] AW yesss! Are we gonna get us some rock crawling!? :D [cool] I've been watching a ton of videos about that recently because my son loves it, and doing it in a SRV sounds like fun.

P.S. Sorry all for the long post, I've been busy the past few days, but love joining in the conversation...late :p )

WOW, this race is FUN! [up][up][up]

First[B]*1[/B] attempt submitted. I'm hoping to dock faster, cook hotter and do better but I thought I'd at least get something on the board.

*1 Oh OK OK, second - this was the first ...

couldn't agree more with rating of fun. RL's been a real B-word over the past few days, but I managed to slip in a few attempts up at my mates house last night (Attempts being the operative word.) didn't catch all the highlights of me crashing and burning at the mailbox challenge, but managed to record a few moments of ruination.
A near miss with a Beluga.

My Friend thinking he can do better than me on a run

With more RL nonsense to contend with today, i'm dreading having to mail Raiko one of my initial runs, but I don't want to make a habit of being the great non - contender.

Looks like everyone's been having fun. I've submitted two more runs with some slight improvement in times, but I think I'm at my limit now on the Xbox.
So my question is. Is it better to buy Elite direct from Frontier for the PC or go through my Steam account? I know I'll be starting from scratch with a new CMDR. Any pearls of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

I try to avoid the toastrack in most cases except for cases where I would miss the slot otherwise, but I often use the inside wall of the letterbox to slow down a bit. Works very well in the Anaconda for example, but gets more difficult the faster you're going.
It's only grade 1. I might drop it, but the main reason I went for maximum heat in the Hauler was that I forgot it in the Courier. Only problem is that Crater Creator has a 2A and can't go lower due to power restrictions (remember 'Fly me to the Moon'?) :D
Not sure yet if "to boost or not to boost". I haven't checked out the possibilities and investment/return yet and might very well skip it.

My SC has slightly matured over the past races, but it has essentially stayed the same:
1.Getting away from the star and a bit below/above the ecliptic to avoid asteroid belts and planets.
2. Full throttle until 05, throttle back (anything below 100% goes), correct course to zip as closely past the planet as possible.
3. Throttle to 50% for the loop, throttle back up at ~60° angle to target.
4. Aiming for planet-to-target-curve, ETA 03-05 depending on the planet.
5. Zip by planet again at full throttle, keeping ETA around 02-04 depending on the planet.
6. Final approach Distance/ETAs: 20Mm/04, 10Mm/03, 7Mm/02, using throttle at 100% or below 100% to adjust the speed/ETA.

For gas giants:
2. Full throttle and aiming for planet-to-target-curve, best to approach the rings/moon plane from below/above
3. Full throttle until ETA 02/03
4. Close flyby at Gasgiant at full throttle, only throttle down when ETA to target will stay below 6 (takes a bit of experience to 'feel' that point)
5. Throttle to 0, deselect and reselect target when ETA drops between 02 and 01 and you aren't close to the station yet.
6. Throttle back up, repeat 5 if necessary until you're in the final approach range (04 at 20Mm and so on)

Depends. I like the standalone version from the frontierstore better because I don't have to start (and probably update) Steam each time I want to play the game and also because I think it could cause less problems than the steam version because the devs have a better control on how the game is downloaded, updated and started (and I don't know how some of the launcher functions, for example starting the game without Horizons, translate to steam). Afaik it also supports frontier a bit more because they don't have to give money to valve if they sell it in their own store. That said there's no difference inside the game (well, maybe except the steam overlay) and it really comes down to personal preference.

The price is the same for both (in the US atm), and I prefer Steam for updates, ease of access, and talking to friends. That's just my preference though.

I have a similar question though. I am looking at getting a second account just for exploration, because it's nice, but I hate missing Buckybubble races on my main account. If I get horizons is the base Elite included? How cheaply can I get a second account?

The base game is not included in the 'normal' Horizons Season Pass, only in the Deluxe Edition. If you're not too much in a hurry I'd wait for the game to be on sale again, iirc I got my second account when 1.5 was much cheaper around last Christmas.

i've stayed up too late. i got my run in ! holiday packing will be shoddy, fortunately my wife has done most of it already.

a good course with some interesting SC approaches. my one run didn't really give me the opportunity to maximise heat or docking entry :(

cookie, your attention to detail is immense. thank you. always learning. it really is no wonder you are so damn fast!

If you don't care then directly from Frontier. That way all of the money goes to them rather than Steam taking a cut.

Are we doing beauty shots for this race? Only I have to say The Wedding Anniversary is looking particularly shiny today!

I'm not 100% sure whether I'll get to post tomorrow night, so I've revealed the full times, speeds and temperatures on the leaderboards. :)

CURRENT STANDINGS - Correct at 01:00 GMT 20-AUG-3302

The action has really been hotting up in unlimited class with runs from both CMDR Alec Turner and CMDR <-lightspeed->. Both run with iCouriers for the scramble stage, with Alec choosing to swap into his Asp-X The Wedding Anniversary for the longer run to Heike and back.

Alec's run is good enough for forth place, but his docking speed in Sans Serif #8 was only a few m/s slower than Cookiehole's Crater Creator at the top of Nuk's Dangerous Landings table. Also Nuk really, really enjoyed watching Alec's earlier unsuccessful docking attempt, that's exactly the kind of explosive flying he's looking for.

<-lightspeed->'s run was fast enough to take second place on the unlimited board for the moment, almost a minute ahead of Onane in Dark Target.

Not much change to the times in the Regulation Cobra class, but things are even hotter there with a Blazing hyperspace entry by CMDR Bruski attaining an impressive hull temperature of 320%! Which means that the brothers are neck and neck in their side bet, and eager to see if anyone can do something Spectacular!

Finally got another run done, but It was a lot worse than my other attempts. my head wasn't in the game due to insistent party invites from my mates. due to go on ark with them (always feels like I'm breaking the prime directive when it comes to moving from this game to a game about primitive warfare and tribe management.). The advice worked a treat, it was the stress and my piloting that let me down. apart from the interdiction's on my last attempt the tips on how to run a relatively smooth race on the xbox worked wonders. cheers again guys, I'm just happy to have got a few semi-decent runs in on a fantastic event:)

@Raiko, full submission to come later when I have more time for uploading and tagging

You Glorious Bast-erd. Well done. :D

Thanks to everyone who took part. Any run that began before midnight is valid, but baring any runs in progress the race is now complete.

I'll put the provisional final board up in the morning (UK), and if anyone has a run to submit then please email or pm me in the next 24 hours.

Tony and Nuk enjoyed the race, but they've got to get back to serving their time now - and it looks like Little Nuk has some cleaning to do unless someone managed a really crazy docking maneuver. :)

@Mutesquash: I received your emailed run thanks.
@Bruski: Nuk's been updating the Black Riband table and will get that posted as well.
