Tony and Nuk enjoyed the race, but they've got to get back to serving their time now - and it looks like Little Nuk has some cleaning to do unless someone managed a really crazy docking maneuver.
I have managed to improve my docking speed, but Crater Creator isn't able to reach Glorious Speed with its current modules. I've been a bit busy during the last few days, so I haven't submitted it yet (the run was slow and I haven't extracted all the screenshots yet). I hope to have time for that tomorrow/today, aswell as for some race analysis (after the second run I'm not quite sure how in the Galaxy I was that much faster in the first one).
That was fantastic chap[up]. I would also like to say thank's for the responses to my post about getting the PC version, I have now bought it.
Fly fast and have fun CMDR's[arrrr]
Mystery solved: 4t of Modular Terminals made for 2j more on the Heike-and-back-trip... I knew they were there but didn't think about the effect they had on the hauler's jumprange. And also not even I am mad enough to jettison MTs...
The other 28s I was slower were lost in Supercruise, docking and probably a long Hyperspace transit... There are so many things that can quickly add 5-10s
Now for some RACE ANALYSIS:
Route
I timed the Supercruise duration between Sy and Lacaille aswell as Kobyashi and Suri (Rule of thumb for moon-planet station pairs: go to the one that is in a higher orbit above a smaller planet first, as it will take less time to escape from that gravity-well in SC; for stations at multiple different planets it depends on more things). Sy-Lacaille was good while Kobayashi-Suri took longer than a Hyperspace jump+Supercruise.
Anlave and LHS 115 are roughly between Bast and LHS 3262 while LHS 2088 and Gladutjin were eliminated due to a bad system location and a longer Supercruise time. My final route had Anlave and LHS 115 as stepping stones between Bast and LHS 3262, so that I didn't have to waste any jumps. The largest distance on that route is below 32ly, which is very manageable for a modded Courier.
The leg to Heike is doable in 3j with a 44ly Hauler (including PEThrusters).
The ship swap time was around 50-60s, so only 30-45s longer than a standard 'Launch'-Turnaround which made sense with 2j shaved off compared to the Courier (which in turn would be 10-20s faster at each docking than the Hauler).
Bast/Hart Station
Anlave/Kobayashi City
LHS 3262/Sy Base
LHS 3262/Lacaille Prospect
LHS 115/Aleksandrov Gateway
Bast/Hart Station --> Hauler
Heike/Brunel City
Bast/Hart Station
Loadouts
What I generally do to these days to determine my loadouts:
Plan route, optimize for small jumprange if possible.
Put FSD, Fuel Scoop and Shields in (no shields if Hauler, just because!). Smallest possible Fuel Tank and highest grade FSD and Scoop (modded if possible).
Add PEThrusters if possible. (Modded if available)
Keep adding Power Distributor and Powerplant grades/classes until you hit your jumprange or Thruster Mass limit. (Modded if useful and possible)
Flying
Fly fast!
For the Dangerous Landings Challenge I boosted just in front of the letterbox. After hitting the topspeed I deployed landing gear and put power to shields aiming for the control tower at the back of the station. I either had luck with the collision both times or that method is good for doing it in a relatively controlled way and not loosing too much time crashing, spinning and searching for your landing pad afterwards. With a landing pad in the back of the station the docking time wasn't much slower than a normal insane docking.
Also a copypasta from the SC rule-of-thumb I posted earlier:
General strategy: Gravity braking loops (also called 'loop of shame' by people who still think that going in at 0:10 is the fastest way of doing supercruise )
1. Getting away from the star and a bit below/above the ecliptic to avoid asteroid belts and planets.
2. Full throttle until 05, throttle back (anything below 100% goes), correct course to zip as closely past the planet as possible.
3. Throttle to 50% for the loop, throttle back up at ~60° angle to target.
4. Aiming for planet-to-target-curve, ETA 03-05 depending on the planet.
5. Zip by planet again at full throttle, keeping ETA around 02-04 depending on the planet.
6. Final approach Distance/ETAs: 20Mm/04, 10Mm/03, 7Mm/02, using throttle at 100% or below 100% to adjust the speed/ETA.
For gas giants:
2. Full throttle and aiming for planet-to-target-curve, best to approach the rings/moon plane from below/above
3. Full throttle until ETA 02/03
4. Close flyby at Gasgiant at full throttle, only throttle down when ETA to target will stay below 6 (takes a bit of experience to 'feel' that point)
5. Throttle to 0, deselect and reselect target when ETA drops between 02 and 01 and you are going to overshoot
6. Throttle back up, repeat 5 if necessary until you're in the final approach range (04 at 20Mm and so on)
Thanks for organizing Raiko and thanks to everyone who participated as well! Kudos to the Cobra Warriors and to the Barbeque Experts! Also sad that Little Nuk lost; this would have been perfect for TK's Joyeuse
Epic barbecue @Bruski, fabulous post-race analysis as always @cookiehole (out of rep I'm afraid) and last but not least, thanks to Raiko for another brilliant race (I wish I'd had time to make more attempts but really enjoyed the couple that I did).
P.S. new race thread is up for Total Recall 2, just follow my signature link.
Cool, almost exactly the same here except the other way around (i.e. Bast -> LHS 115 -> LHS 3262 -> Anlave -> Bast). Glad to see my instincts were good ('cos I confess I didn't give it too much thought).
I'll definitely give total recall 2 a go once I've recouped my racing costs (unfortunately my efforts in the additional challenges ended with a bit more of a deficit to my pride than my shoddy run times as well as my meager funds.). Forgot to give you kudos for your referral to the first total recall, that video (Get your ASP to mars.) made me remember why the movie was one of my favorites as a kid. Would also like to rep you for your post race analysis Cookiehole but the computer says no (apparently I need to share the love a bit more before it will let me.). a lot of insights that will serve me well in the future I hope(Don't have the time for your videos tonight, but I'll definetely make some to give them a swatch tommorow. As for everyone else cheers for the help and advice as well as the cheeky banter with each other on the board. I hope one to day to have the skills to pique the interest of Nuk and fat tony, right now though I'm heading out to arque with some friends and an interdictor of my own to see if these blasted pirates like a taste of their own medicine.
Most of all though, thanks to raiko for a short (relatively in terms of my run.) but sweet race.
May the winds of the cosmic latte be at your backs commanders so that you may find good grace in haste
Sorry for the minor holdup, I've had absolutely no time today to upload and post the provisional results. I did get the images updated though so everything should be ready to post the confirmed final standings in the morning
I think that I've received everything now, but if anyone has any completed run to send then you've got a few hours to get it to me.
Thanks again to everyone who took part, I've had a great time running this one.
Here are the final tables, thanks once again to everyone who took part. Congratulations to the winners Cookiehole and Bruski, I hope you all had fun regardless of where you finished, or how many ships you torched or smashed for the Lonnegan brothers' amusement.
The challenges were inspired by Alec's jokers in the Bump & Grind challenge and by high temperature refuels during BBR6 and the Kessel Run, especially furrycat's experiments pushing a nastily designed regulation Cobra.
I often find that during a repeat run in a race, once you realise that you're not going to at least beat your own time, it feels like a bit of a waste of time finishing. So I wanted something to make sure it's never over till it's over.
The course wasn't particularly scientifically designed, but I knew that two stations orbiting twin planets, or a planet and moon, are normally quicker to visit in succession than travelling to another system. So I made sure that the most distant system in the scramble allowed that time-boost.
I also knew that two stations orbiting different planets in the same system are normally slower to visit in succession than hyperspacing to another system, so I made sure that one of those was close by. The Anlave system was used extensively during the initial CG to transport medicines to Bast, so that was the most obvious choice.
I thought that an optional ship-change mid-race (and a race split between short hops and a multi-jump section) would be an interesting alternative to trying to balancing the race for different ships. It turned out that Bast and Heike were a nice distance apart, so only a stripped-down very-lucky RNGineered Conda could possibly one-jump it, and such a ship would probably be too slow in normal space.
Excellent. Once again, thanks for hosting such an enjoyable race and congratulations to Cookiehole and Bruski.

Yeah, I really really liked those two extra challenges and you're dead right. With the limited time I had available I kinda knew I wasn't going to challenge Cookiehole's time but the thought that I could perhaps challenge the docking speed and/or temperature records made me come back for more. I wonder if I can come up with some bonus challenges for Total Recall 2. I'll have a think between now and the weekend.

All really nice choices. I can't recall whose race first introduced the idea of at least two stations being in the same system, and the slowly dawning realisation that flying directly between them might not be the fastest route, but I saw (and liked) what you did there.

Absolutely loved the ship change idea. I don't know if Cookiehole has any insight/analysis on this but it felt like a close call to me as to whether it was worth doing or not. With Bast station being UA bombed I have to say that getting two ships there (and getting them out again) was a bit of a pain a thoroughly enjoyable bit of additional gameplay (#NOINSTANTTRANSFER) but I really enjoyed doing the swap during the actual race. It felt very real and appropriate.

I see to recall Rankaze reaching some ridiculous speeds during the Buckybubble, but if I recall he had Grade Dirty Drive tuning on Joyeus, which seems like it might be a little while for me. I got back from Jacques yesterday, and used exploration data to max out Elvira and Sirius rep, but getting the 25 modular terminals to unlock Marco Qwent seems like it'll take FOREVER. If anyone knows of a good way or a faster route to Palin please let me know.

Ahh, this would've been a failure point for me. I used a travelling salesman algorithm to optimize my route, but listed the distance between stations in the same system as 0, because I foolishly assumed it would be faster or equivalent to a jump. I went from Suri to Kobayashi, which was probably the worst in system route possible, even though my jumps were minimized.
Bruski's Inferior Route:
Bast/Hart Station
LHS 115/Aleksandrov Gateway
Anlave/Kobayashi City
Anlave/Suri Park
LHS 2088/Tanaka Terminal
Bast/Hart Station
Heike/Brunel City
Bast/Hart Station

This was about the same for me, the biggest trick was timing the boost to perfectly align with slot passage to allow maximum brake time. I also think the cargo scoops might've helped/ Not sure. However, it's crazy that your shields didn't even pop a ring. My 425 brought the Flaming Onionhead Express down to 605 hull in one giant clang.
Thanks for organizing Raiko and thanks to everyone who participated as well! Kudos to the Cobra Warriors and to the Barbeque Experts! Also sad that Little Nuk lost; this would have been perfect for TK's Joyeuse
It's true, and I'm sad he missed this one. I went back to watch Joyeuse's Buckybubble clip and found it topping out boost at 727 m/s. [woah] I can only hope there's another such challenge in the future.

That's a perfect farewell phrase! Thanks for participating, let me know if you need some tips on how to get some easy cash. (Skimmer missions and base assaults can get you up pretty fast if you have horizons, otherwise long-range smuggling can do the same) And give my regards to those pesky pirates! (pew pew)

Woohoo, thank YOU! After all, you were a bit guilted you into running it, so we knew you would be busy, and muchly appreciate the time you took.
I think it was well worth it, if just to see how some bonus goals could enliven a race. [up]

Yep, I loved that! Especially since I had terrible connection issues the last three days, and had little to no chance of beating my previous time, but I still had fun cooking myself. I thought these were great additions to the race, both from a "no wasted runs' aspect, and also adding the possibility for additional banter and RP, which I enjoy. I'm not saying I expect them in all future races, but I won't ever complain if they are.

Sure tricked me! It's fun to have a new thing to optimize though, so I'll keep that in mind in the future. I also liked the change of pace of 5 short legs and then 2 very long ones.

I really think this would've been worth it, and wanted to try it, but didn't make it back in time. In spite of the slow speed of the 'Conda, saving 1 or 2 jumps each way is 90-180s, enough that you might be able to just use the docking computer and still come out ahead.

He had some analysis up in his post, and I think the time difference is smaller than I thought at first, and it's definitely worth it. Always happy to see new mechanics to toy around with.
Oh, no worries about the Modular Terminals, I'm at 10/25 for Quent myself at the moment
I've found a mission at some random Mission Board between the runs. I just had to keep these four MTs in the hold no matter what would happen.
Yeah, that was weird. The Courier has very strong shields but I expected them to drop. It's probably a bug that some collisions with some structures don't do any damage, have encountered that before (not sure if it's easily reproducable)
Congrats! I have to say you Xbox guys impress me, I know how lost I would be without a keyboard and with a controller. Props!

Cheers for the props on the farewell and us console muggles with our limited tech. Dunno if you'll be back on this forum, and I've probably ruined the farewell with another comment, but I had to come back with my congratulations to you an cookiehole on your wins. Just finished my time in arque, didn't get to put as much time into the event as I wanted but I still managed to sneak into the top 50%, so I'm currently on 14 million creds, enough I think for a few crashes in an SRV. Going to sign up for total recall 2 once I've marvelled over cookiehole's vids (If they're as fun to watch as his other videos from the previous events I've been a part of then I'm fast becoming a fan )

If you haven't seen them you really have to view CMDR Alot's videos! As opposed to the raw footage I normally upload he has made some real art pieces (especially about the A* Challenge) that capture the true Buckyball Spirit in a very entertaining way Channel link

cheers for the video link guys. Your videos may be raw cookiehole, but they're still entertaining. With two reccommendations to commander Alot's page I'll definitely give his videos a gander. Kudos to Bruski for his video. Sounded like the worlds craziest arcade game on a bit of speed and LSD.
heading over o total recall2 now. Thought I could make it to Jaques and back with a friend before the race closed, but I got distracted with the great easter egg hunt of yesterday, so Im real close to the bubble again. Not that Im expecting any trouble but with a more than a million racked up in cartographic information by only getting a foot out the threshold in terms of exploration will certainly liven things enough to keep me from dying.
Does anyone else know what the enigmatic message led to eventually. Used Cannon as a reference for the best places to look once the solved the riddles, but I got logged off and thrown from the same instance as twelve other players. stayed on for an extra half hour, but I don't know If I was experiencing the same as hey were. If anyone has any answers to what happened once these bounty hunters ("Or assets, not quite sure what they are but Im sure one is at least a bounty hunter.) were found?
Reps to both you and cookie hole if only I could.
