I came back to this thread to see what people's impression was - what a mistake. I remember now why I stopped coming in here.

Why some people cling to the idea that the space sim market is a zero-sum game where any competition to ED is by definition something to loath and despise is amazing to me.

Loathing and despising?

Wow. Here we go again.

Well, I just had a go in my aurora, and it managed to confound even my low expectations upon seeing the first videos :(. On my graphics card, it's not even particularly pretty! There are so many design choices I disagree with...

Manual aiming of the gun separately to moving the ship (this really sucks for me on gamepad as set up, since I am left handed and my right one can't hit a barn :p)

Yaw priority is extremely dull to me

Ship highlighting and pointing out is way too intrusive

Sounds are anaemic

Ther's no real sense of movement or inertia

Aurora is SLOW! Slower than a lakon I think! 80 m/s with 150 m/s boost. If this is a ploy to get me to upgrade it won't work

I like the controller rumble though :)

ED alpha 1.0 was a lightning strike of awesome out of the darkness... AC 0.8 is almost the complete opposite. SC has a loooong way to go to be the best damn space sim ever!

On the positive side, there are quite a few pb backers who are not enjoying the ED flight model... Maybe they would be happier with SC: nothing wrong with personal preference :)

Just wanted to say I'm having a great laugh at what is going on on Citizen forums. The battle between hordes of casuals and not so vast realists is amazing fun to watch.

This x1000. I'm in complete agreement with you on all your points. It's a lot better with a 300i though, the Aurora does feel like a flying brick.

I certainly don't feel like that. I have a major investment in SC, and I would love for it to be a success (Wing Commander 1 & 2 and Privateer were all great).

I'm deeply worried about what we're seeing in the AC though.

If you want to provide feedback visit the arena commander forum.

But please stop comparing the games.

isnt it only natural? I have spent months reading on the SC forums about how ED is low low budget game with low detail cheese wedges for ships with a boring PG world, where as SC will be all things for all (wo)men.

Now both are out, we can actually at least on the surface compare the 2.

there is room in the genre for both to be great successes, I certainly hope so having invested in both.... but it is folly to ask people not to compare them ESP after months and months of naysaying from some of the SC guys, now SC is putting its money where its mouth is!.

Lots of negativity here, how many are actually LIKING the flight model?

Let you know when I can play it.

@ Boomotang, you are a better pilot than me then (which is no major shocker)

Well I'm nothing special. But I didn't have any trouble with the first couple enemy encounters.

(bear in mind I never bothered with alpha 1.1 which was apparently much easier.)

Well, if we really MUST compare, then we must compare apples to apples, no?

the thing which I imagine will at least be close to representative to what Roberts wants is the flight model and the "feel" of the gun play, after all it has been tried and tested internally. I imagine it will just be fine tuning now.

I've singled out a few points which aim to address most of the general concerns here.

As we move forward to Version 0.9, we will focus on adding the following improvements:

-Audio improvements with additional SFX, music, mix, and improvements to the dynamic music system

-Further flight model upgrades to better handle unique thruster power combinations and refine the control of each ship

-Additional ship, weapon, item, and thruster tuning to improve the balance of Arena Commander based on community testing

This is on purpose and elevate the fact the map is fish bowl as far as space combat is concerned. Any faster and you'd be hitting the wall every 5 seconds.

Yep. And it's just as natural for people to think that they're comparing apples to apples when they really aren't.

One example. Could you walk through your hangar in ED, walk around your ships, and climb into them when it first released? Wait...... you still can't do that...

I'm not knocking ED. I'm just pointing out 'apples to oranges'.

That has nothing to do with the actual gameplay of flying and fighting the ships though. So far the avatar play is irrelevant.

In opinion you mean.

For me there is a clear comparison worth making. Based on Arena Commander and as far as space combat goes, what we are looking at here is arcade shooter, with a preference for mouse aim, that feels like a FPS turret, and will suit a casual audience, where as ED is a space sim demanding the development of piloting skill.

That sounds cool. It's what I would expect when bumping up from an entry level ship to a luxury ship. I have the Aurora, 300i, and Hornet, so I can't wait to see how different they feel to fly.

fair point..... and I was very impressed with the hangar module... but ultimately that was all window dressing.

the meat and potatoes for both games for me is how satisfying it feels when flying. Everything else is great of course, but that part HAS to be good as it imo is where the game will shine or flop.

(dont miss understand me, I am still expecting the game to ultimately be great, and I am NOT saying SC is going to be a bad game but that vandul swarm, certainly on initial impressions on twitch, does have me a little concerned).

I will of course post back here in a few hrs admitting I was way off base wit hany worries if I fire up the game and get on with it :)

Yes, in ED you could do that in expansions, and in ships with better cooling that this 80s spaceships.

Anyway we are comparing the flying system, cause this is a space sim.

It really does make me appreciate the fine work the FD devs have done with creating the ED flight and weapons model. Seems like they made the right compromises between reality and gameplay to keep it interesting.
It's been hours since i saw an SC stream and if i close my eyes i still see the ship spinning.
Feels like i've been trough one of these https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlAsSyDAWR8

I hope CIG don't sit idle and test out some new flight physics to find the right setup, afterall that's what alpha is for right, trying new stuff to see what works and what not.

I didn't say it did.

I'll look at that when I get my hands on. Because from the videos I've seen so far, I get the opposite impressions from most of the people here.
