News Future support for Win 32 and DX10

Good ...

That means FD are serious about ED as a game and moving it forward (technically speaking).

DB, is this another way of saying that 3.0 will be dropping March - April next year? Sounds to me like you just confirmed that! :D

It's fair, all in all, one cannot keep backwards compatibility forever if it means a considerable addition to development cost and time. With fair warning six months ahead, most users should have ample time to get a 64-bit system also. Thumbs up for Mr Braben.

I totally understand why FDev would want to drop 32 bit support and DX10 really wouldn't be such a big effect as you imagine as a large number of gamers are at least with DX11 by now but many are still on 32 bit and just don't want to upgrade despite the benefits. For reference last year i did a survey to my own customers and of the 625 responses i had 318 still had a 32 bit system and had no to plan to upgrade, yes i know it's a small sample but found the results to be more than interesting and these figures wouldn't have any impact on FDev in the slightest so maybe a poll would be needed to gage interest maybe FDev?

Business customers? I think they're always the last to be dragged into an upgrade, kicking and screaming. Legacy software is almost a given in the business world. And in some cases it makes sense, if you have something that's not a security issue, not connected to the outside world, and works fine, why break things? And things ALWAYS break in a migration, usually about halfway through.

The engine should be at the forefront of gaming technology. Drop 32bit and dx10 like a rock ASAP, in my opinion.

Not sure if it was mentioned, but laptops would be harmed with the DX10 question. A lot of us are mobile players and the entry point for a playable laptop is around $400 (used, refurb). Force us on to new graphics hardware and the entry point is around $700.

To be frank ...

DX11 came out like 7 years ago? So you are talking about a GPU thats going to be at least 6 years old if it doesn't support that.

I doubt such a GPU would run modern games in any sort of way anyway.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Therefore, I'm onboard with dropping 32-bit and DX10 support. Thanks for the thread, and keep making the game better!

You've got to go with the majority and that is 64bit and DX11 these days.

We want the game to move on, so we have to move on. Old hardware is only going to get older. Heck, even new hardware is going to get older.
Nothing stays the same and neither should game specs! If we want ED to truly grow into the master vision I'm sure we all have and hope for it, then FD have to make some calls which inevitably are going to be disliked by some.

You can't please all the people all of the time so don't waste your time trying. Move on and those that want to come along for the ride will - one way or another!

Are you talking about that <1% ? :D

Just get better laptop. 700$ is not the end of the world.

Hmm currently im due a upgrade later this year but family life does infringe on my financial prowess so its not set in stone. I will try 64bit again maybe its thr title video that is slow as heck as i have maxed out the ram on it.

Old tech, no need for Win32 and DX10 any more, so onwards and upwards. Most of us i should think run 64bit systems with at least 8gb ram these days so yes, out with the old :)
