News Future support for Win 32 and DX10

Holy hell, then why do you still support this old-as-a-dinosaurs things? Given the percentages you've named...
Those numbers would have been higher when they were originally planning the project and some of the prototype code, newer effects might have been built into their own Cobra engine, now they are, an one hope has started working integrating DX12.

I think it's long overdue that 32bit Windows gets finally abandoned. If it saves lots of development resources and allows to focus implementation efforts it's all the more reason to finally leave the old OS behind! Especially since David said that only a tiny fraction of the ED player base uses 32bit Windows anyway.

Very good decision, FD! [up]

Firstly, I am sorry if this question has already been answered. I do not have time to read the whole thread!

I am using Win 7 and will not be moving to Win 10 for the forseeable future, if at all. Will Elite continue to run on Win 7 64bit?

As long as dx11 is still supported win7x64 will be supported. Eventually, you might want to upgrade for dx12 improvements as dx12 was not back ported.

DX11 and 64bit are both available for Win 7 and the game should continue to run as long as you are running 64bit version of the operating system. you can find out if you are using 64 by via

start-control panel -system

Win 10 is still freely available from Microsoft, so perhaps it time for that upgrade.

Not sure if it was mentioned, but laptops would be harmed with the DX10 question. A lot of us are mobile players and the entry point for a playable laptop is around $400 (used, refurb). Force us on to new graphics hardware and the entry point is around $700.

What? Five years ago i bought a 400€ laptop which supports dx11... It can hardly run ED, but my point is about dx11...

Sounds like planetary landings and planets wont be a joke after all. With 64 bit you also have more options for advanced graphics and mechanics overall.

Just for giggles (and since I read through quite a bit of this thread and didn't see anyone actually affected by the changes):

I am running Elite on my ThinkPad X220t Laptop bought in 2011, with Intel Core i7-2620M and onboard HD Graphics 3000. I have to use minimum settings and 720p. It is always on the edge of completely sucking, but nevertheless I spend some happy hours with it. I never bought Horizons of course. And just for record: I, too, welcome the announced changes. When your hardware is too old, you have to live with the consequences. For most other purposes my Laptop is still quite fine so I didn't want to throw away my hardware yet... but maybe there is a time on the horizon that calls for an upgrade :)

Elite is basically the same game on 32 bit and 64 bit versions, therefore they need to drop 32 bit support in order to manipulate the game as a whole. keeping 32 bit would mean they need to support 2 different games in the future which is an unnecessary hindrance.

This is great news !
Older hardware should never , ever hold back the new one. (even when only 1% has the newer one)

What? for real? is being taken seriously, to support old technology to increase its market share, when you have to do is support DX12 to get extra performance on older PCs, and gift microsoft upgrade to Windows 10 upgradeen your pc ...

I seriously think it's a step back.

Leave the old stuff behind - especially ED does not deserve that.

I know I'm not saying anything that hasn't been said above lots of times, but go for it.

From a quick google, DX11 cards were first announced towards the end of 2009. So at launch in Dec 2014, DX10 cards were already a few years old. Yeah, I know DX10 cards would've been on sale for quite a while afterwards, but anyone buying after say 2011 had reasonable notice they were buying into old tech.

As for 64 bit windows, well that's been the sensible option for any new build for a looooong time now.

The only issue I could see is if this meant that people had bought the game with specs that met the requirements, but would be shut out of playing it at all from this change. I guess even providing a dev freezed version of say 2.2 or 2.3 might cause a support headache if those players were still interacting with the same universe. From what's been said, that's presumably a pretty small number of players - Really not sure myself whether a refund would be required to be fair, though it may well be the sensible course of action legally and PR wise (get me, armchair business adviser :)).

But to shout again - go for it!
