Arcade commander is horrible!

first, the whole crap arcade feel is not a bug it's their design choice!

ITS TERRIBLE.

No skill, mouse aim rubbish.

Seriously, the flight models and flying gameplay is disgusting. Yes they can tweak it up but they are going to have to pull out a wildcard. Flying is the MAIN THING in the whole game..... if it sucks, the whole game sucks.....

jesus i cant believe they even said "ok lets go, the game is fun" its horrible... and i thought elite was going to be bad with it's peer 2 peer system.

A quote from SC forum

I will clarify further - although I do plan on getting a stick, I don't want to sound elitist and I think the playing field should be as even as possible - forcing people to shell out hundreds of bucks to stay competitive is nonsense.

However, I maintain that point-and-click dogfighting has many problems, first and foremost that it's boring. In space you already have very little room to hide behind, as such piloting skills becomes of paramount importance. Being able to aim with the mouse/Oculus Rift/Track IR/whatever makes the game too... "simple" - not in the meaning of it being easy, just simple - as in, requiring less skill.

Dumbing it down, put simply.

So I've just seen some vids from inside the cockpit and I must say I'm not impressed by what they have delivered. It looks really sluggish. I wonder what it actually feels like to play.

So what's the general reception from SC backers and people who have played it? Its probably different watching it to playing it I expect..

Well i think you already read my post above, with all the bold letterings and quotes.

Luckily i only payed $45, so it's like...nothing

HOWEVER, the cost of psychiatric help for those in denial that SC flying is amazing... that is going to be a lot of $$$$$$

This is what killed war thunder for me, stopping it from even being enjoyable as a casual experience. Rather than there being parity, the fact you could do acrobatics more easily with a joystick was irrelevant, because when push comes to shove you will always be outgunned with people aiming with a mouse. While you're struggling to line up your nose and gun sights, they put the cross-hair on you and press fire - nothing more to it than that.

I thought SC would go the same way for a long time.

War Thunder had Simulator mode which is AMAZING, i've clocked 700 hours of FLIGHT TIME (not afk ever) and it ONLY has dogfighting...no MMO like Star Citizen or Elite. Why did i put so much time in it? Because ITS AMAZING with a joystick, ZERO - 0 mouse fliers in simulator battles.

Full cockpits, full world war 2 maneuvors... it's amazing (cept for the balance of planes....kinda bull haha, not the flight models themselves but sometimes 1942 vs 1944 planes)

The issue isn't whether or not you can get a kill in 3PV. Is it any easier to get a kill in 3PV than in 1PV or is it harder? If it's harder or the same, then it's a non-issue because you don't have to use it.

I believe what you're seeing is mainly the AI difficulty.

Sorry to be the one to break this to you Boomotang. But its easier in 3PV. And this is without missiles even...

I agree the game has several modes. Including Historic where what I have written does not apply. I'm talking about the default mode the majority/most people I know fly. When I used to play it none of the other modes has enough people bothering with them to get a decent game with public players.

Oh definitely. However, the ice-skating feel and control with the joystick feels as bad as it looks - possibly worse. My opinion and reception of the game is difficult to describe. Over the last 6 months my expectations have already been getting lower and lower, so I'm really surprised to have been let down even more.

I don't want to go on a rant right now, because I have a lot to say. But I'll just say that I appreciate the FD devs even more now.

The direction that SC is going is crystal clear. Get $$$ from space sim fans, then release a game that appeals to anyone that they can get a dollar from.

I personally find it easier to get a kill in 3PV for the following reasons:

1) It is easier to track the target.
2) I have a far wider FOV
3) I can clearly see which direction the target heads in when it has gone outside my FOV
4) I can user tracer fire to track.
5) I don't have to worry about head movement.

However I'm sure there will be others that say 3PV is harder. But either way - it will provide a distinct advantage for some people.

Ahh ok. Historic is that odd mix

Mouse has the aim and joystick the manuevor.

But yeah. Arcade mode is TRASH! Total rubbish, 10 lives.... name tags.... lead indicator..... instructor flying...... total lack of depth - TRASH!

Joystick - Could just be a case of getting used to it ?

I don't think so. Whenever you move the joystick it feels like it builds up momentum and releases the energy at the most inopportune time. It also lags behind raw input by a noticeable margin. X Rebirth has better joystick control.

It's comparable to the TrackIR/OR bug that was shipped with Alpha 4 and how it made everyone nauseous.

joystick has quite a big dead zone, there is no costumization option right now of any sort.

biggest issue: you cant turn of the mouse, you need to center it and put it aways or turn of the hardware otherwise it will interfere with your stick.

Sound needs a LOT of improvement, man cant praise FD enough how immersive their sound is compared to sc.

of course SC is about a year behind EDs development, that should always be taken into account.

still: quite 99% of the time we saw a dev flying he used mouse/keyboard or an xbox controller. Reading the forum these also seem to be the best controllers for SC right now.

watching videos of fd devs play elite i mostly see them using hotas and thats the best controller right now in elite.... looks like a trend ...

Control inputs aren't really a big issue though, they can be tweaked eventually same as how ED controls improved.
The flight model is the issue since that's really an intrinsic property of the game.
No matter what control inputs you give the player, it will still only be about who is the best at aiming their million polygon turret.

Well, its bit too hard to compare them now. I'll wait until SC has moved along as far as Elite has in their development.

So far I like the way Elite handles its flight system a lot better. I also like the less cluttered look of Elites HUD. But we will see how much SC's flight path, HUD and other tid bits change as they move out of the Pre-Alpha stage and get a lot of feedback from the community.

As for the FPS arguments. It's just another aspect of the game. If you don't like that aspect then don't use it. The FPS parts are being contracted out to a studio in Colorado (iifonic) so you have not seen really any changes to FPS because they have not implemented them yet. What you have now is mostly CryEngine default.

Ref the TPV I triedvthe behind the asteroid sneaky look and it didn't work like it looked in their video. Could bd wrong, only a quick check but it looked like they have at least tweaked the POV a bit...

Have not played yet, maybe later today... but going by videos I think it looks very nice! Graphics are shiny... yup graphics looks nice...

But even just watching, I get the arcady feel. Control wise they 'spoke' about joysticks and I think i remember them even mentioning aligning with Saitek or someone to create special joystick for SC (I think they mentioned that on some video months ago)... why bother if it is easier played with m/k? Padlock view...ugh.

Not once in the video fourty6to3 posted did I feel you (the player) were flying. Maybe a little in padlock view... Just a turret in space was mentioned earlier... that is about right. Maybe while playing it will feel better. Not too hopeful at this point though. May be an alpha but I would assume they are pretty much set on their flight mechanics for this.

Wow all that cash for an arcade shooter... my cash as well... Hopefully they have more tricks coming in updates... maybe the FPS side of this is more interesting. I may be playing a space sim on the ground. Land Citizen for me.

Depends on how much you dropped. I caved and put in $45 not long ago.
