Tusken Raiders maybe? :D

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. Just shameless really shameless.

If it has to drag these depths of ripping off popular sci-fi then it really is getting desperate.

When's the next XXXXXX-CON thing then where they'll be able to show some more shameless ripping?

Once again, they showed a pretty yet bland staged demo much more representative of an on-rail solo/co-op semi-linear experience than a massively persistent game where all is about moment to moment systemic gameplay. And as always :
- "space" is quite secondary - could say quaternary ^^ - manning your ship feels accessory,
- samey press <<use>> and go to the next checkpoint level design,
- AI is still desperately MIA,
- Item 2.0 may be a jewel under the hood, but <<use>> still looks like barely reliable,
- and 3/4/5/whatever years after they're still stuck in ProofofConcept-Land.

BDSSE: Bland Down on Surface without Space Experience.

Kudos to the artists though (both for their talent, and the mismanaged pressure over their shoulders), and to Ben Parry and pals: the cloud tech is quite gorgeous, I do hope FDEV will manage something like this both for planets with atmosphere and hopefully gas giants.

And if the Twitch stream viewing numbers were any indication, then interest in all things Star Citizen is starting to tail off. Badly. If you are a highly anticipated game on the verge of release that is looking to make the maximum impact on the gaming market, having your livestreaming numbers at your biggest event of the year fall from 70,000 at peak last year, to 34,000 this year, is NOT a good sign. At all.
During the stream the numbers occasionally dropped down to 7k.

Very valid points, basically more of the same...
Also I can add that demo was single player only

Also this part :)

Really Chris?!, I know one game that does this too, maybe even better:

;)
In general, looks like massive content delays are expected...

Actually, i am afraid you are wrong here. You cannot see any space stations orbiting planets from the surface in ED.
In the SC demo it looked however, completely out of scale. You don't see the ISS with a sniper scope, and surely not the details. Rule of cool. (Fine with me i guess.)

True, but it looks so fantastic, like a dream of a space game. The atmospheric planets give the game such a fantastic atmosphere whereas Elite is always black in black. If they manage to get it done, it will be a fantastic game. But I hope they get the multiplayer done right. Elite became extremely boring to me as it's just not a (as supposed) multiplayer game.

And good missions and an underlying storyline would be perfect. Roberts is experienced in that and prooved already he can do it.

Just dreaming of the perfect game.

Wow.

I had already low expectations of no show of SC 3.0 Alpha (obviously they understand legal ramificatons of it) but showing NO Squadron 42 or anything really....2.6? Space Marine? Anything?

Wow. Another hacked together CryEngine demo ON RAILS?!

Seriously, SC fans, HOW CAN YOU EVEN DEFEND THIS?

OH God. They haven't have they??? Don't tell me that they really have??

Oh God stop. It's shameless :)
I wonder if stuff like that will cause IP infringement lawsuits. "Inspired" goes on so far, some originality is required.

Chris Roberts has a well-known history of selling someone else's ideas as his own.

Because you are too far from station on planet, but you can see other planets orbiting you

btw if you drop out supercruise at 20-30km from station you can see small station.

But I agree, that in demo station looked totally out of scale, so that was probably staged to impress backers...

It doesn't look fantastic. It is bland, without any imagination or artistic style. It is not even dream worth of space sim fans.

If they manage...

You know, that were my thoughts when i saw the KS pitch video and backed them. This was in 2012. And four years later conceptual tech demos are still all they have? That's the thing with ongoing crowdfunding. You develop pitch after pitch, but only a fraction of resources goes into actually game development, hence only a fraction of the demoed content will be in any final game. This was the same with the nice explosions the had last year and which were dropped from the game. They developed that for nothing, just to show off.

I think there really was a discussion somewhere that stations are not even rendered from the surface. 20-30km is far away from the surface.

Just a reminder to folks who are still blithely supporting every thing that Chris Roberts says without any sort of critical thinking or reasoning, here is what he had to say about Squadron 42's *imminent* release.... back in 2015!

When can gamers play the game?

The single-player first episode of the story is going to be out at the end of this year. I would say that the final commercial [release] will probably be the end of 2016. But you'll be able to experience most of what you'll be doing in the game at toward the end of this year.

Because it looks shiny and appeals to the imagination. As always with SC. It is a Cloud Imperium.

There are some angry threads in SC forums, so not everybody is happy with demo...

I guess, year 2017 for SC is do or die...

People said that last year about SQ42, too.
And there are hundreds more hype threads than angry threads.

Well, nice to see some progress, even if its not actually playable like that yet. Nice biomes, looking forward to when we get atmos in ED.

However, that sandworm.... i think Frank Herbert's lawyers might be having a word.

As for the release dates, was anyone really surprised?

EDIT: However, can't help but feel shades of NMS here.

So many laughable comments here.
The planet tech demo was amazing.

It is not a tech demo, it is hacked together CryEngine level.

if you can't recognise that then you shouldn't even be commenting tbh.

I recognize as another attempt to woo backers to squeeze more money out of them, DESPITE NOT HAVING ACTUALLY PLAYABLE GAME FOR MANY YEARS.

fanboys, gotta fanboy I guess.

Ohh, you got that right.

And BTW I own ED and Horizons and don't yet own Star Citizen but I would happily sell my copy of ED tomorrow and I' will hoping Star Citizen is the game I though ED would be.
Will it ever be finished?

Then please do sell your copy (in fact you can't because it is against TOS, but who cares) :)

It is hugely ambitious, far more so than ED which itself was hugely ambitious but in many tchnical ways it is already ahead of ED.

In what ways? Selling pipe dreams to potential players? Also you should learn that "hugely ambitious" doesn't mean it has means to do it.

It just makes me laugh how fanboys are willing it to fail, as if having the best game ever on the market would be a terrible thing for a gamer.

You know what's that sound? Other space games being actually released. You know what we don't hear? SC or SQ42 being released any time soon.

"Best game" indeed. And you wonder why AAA publishers have you for years with their vertical demos, screenshots and trailers. You are so easy to manipulate.

I still don't get they couldn't manage to show even just a glimpse, a Sorrow Tour 2.0, of SQ42... Rumors point to a full priority focus on SQ42, yet they have nothing to show. Weird.

Mmm another scripted demo. So the goal now is to make a Destiny-like game?
I guess discussing the demo's merits or lack thereof is pointless given the foam forming around the fanboys' mouthes. Already there's two camps: Those who are impressed by this, and those who've seen this before.
