Hardware & Technical Saitek x55 rhino

You could either use a file to carefully try to clean up the teeth on the grey ring, or let Saitek send you new ones. If it came out of the box like that I would first try to get a replacement.

This is my usage for the throttle and I think it works great.

I use the -100 to 100% full range on the throttle. I use a button for 0% incase i need to be stationary very quickly.

I use the 2 red buttons on the back of the throttle (where your fingers rest) for strafe left and right. Then you have the 2 mini joysticks where your thumb rests. I push forward on the top 1 to strafe up and push forward on the bottom 1 to strafe down. This in combination with the joystick makes for some very smooth flying and feels great once you get used to it. All switches are used for targeting / landing gear etc. Took me a while to get it how i like it but it really feels like the best way.

I have a very loud click too, but i hardly notice it ingame. i guess it will fix itself over time, if not i'll contact saitek as 1984Softy suggested.

I know others have said that the loud click is nothing to do with the spring, but I was having a loud click when twisting as well, and I noticed that the spring wasn't sitting properly on the base plate. Once properly fixed in position, I haven't had a clicking noise since. The squeaking sound from twisting also seems to die away after doing that.

I applied some graphite lube just above the spring base plate earlier, the stick is now silky smooth. Even on the lowest spring it works perfectly.

I've loved the X55 from day one, but that I've gotten rid of all the little niggling problems it is absolutely fantastic. Would not give it up for anything.

Anyone have a loud click whenever yaw is used on the stick? If I yaw left over and over I only get a click on the first one. There is no further click until I yaw in the opposite direction. It is very loud, and I suspect the teeth in the grey outer ring are dodgy.

Yes, I get this too... very annoying and considering returning it because of it... for £150 it's pretty poor quality control.

Well mine should be coming tomorrow :D

Though the chances is no one will be here to collect it.. which means I will have to drive to the West Brom depot to pick it up..

Would that not be a little risking having the cargo scoop and eject cargo options on the same switch? And the toggle settings stiff enough that you wouldn't accidentally click it back too far when withdraw the cargo scoop?

You have to click it up or down, it centres so unless you purposefully click it down, theres no risk at all!

Of course you could always select one of the two unused switches for ejecting, but I have not had an issue yet (touches wood).

Thanks again for the replies.

I have a question about the Throttle septup Nomadski posted.

The red button on the side is set up to reverse throttle.
That slightly worries me because I would have liked to reverse thrust by pulling the throttle stick all the way back.
I would have liked my ship to stay stationary with the throttle in the middle.
Is that setup possible?

Certainly possible, though I prefer for the throttle to give me a full field of application and with the lack of any kind of notice you have hit the middle you would have to either select a deadzone (which again lessens the amount of control your throttle will give you) or brain train yourself into remembering the exact point of centre.

Those were my thoughts exactly. I don't see what's wrong with the default set up to be honest, just assign hyperspace and supercruise to the pinky rocker on the throttle

There isn't anything wrong with the default, I didnt say there was, I merely posted my own setup as I read posts in earlier pages for people with little idea how to set it up.

As I stated, I was just posting MY setup, people can take what they like from that. It may give some people some kind of an idea how to configure the defaults closer to their own liking.

Alas, it happens without the spring in. It can be replicated by twisting the outer ring one way then the other when the stick part isn't attached. It seems the inner and outer grey parts don't lock completely tightly, and there is some travel. The joystick seems to have some sort of microphonic effect when attached.

The original x55 I had didn't have this issue (but was sticky and farty - this one is fine in that regard as they seem to have lubed it up a bit more)

EDIT: BTW I'm selling my X65f in the hardware section if anyone is interested.

I've picked up some graphite lube this weekend. Do you put any on the end of the spring or onto the bottom plastic as well?

I'll post some picks when I get home tonight to better explain, but you'll need to remove the spring. You then just apply the lube to the central bar just above the disk that the spring normally sits on, pull the disk up and spin it around a few times to spread the lube, then it's ready to use.

Try to use as little lube as possible.

Mine is now so smooth that I can use any of the springs and the stick will still centre itself properly with absolutely no sticking.

It's actually very surprising how different the stick feels with the blue and green spring when there is absolutely no friction.

My X55 arrived from Amazon yesterday, and I certainly noticed a huge improvement over my T.Flight X. I can now aim accurately again with fixed lasers :D (My t.flight did seem to have a small deadzone which made fine aiming tricky)

I stuck on the yellow spring as soon as I got it as I noticed a number of people seem to settle on this one, but I'll probably give the other ones a go at some point. The yellow (second lightest) spring does feel fine though.

I do get the loud clicking where it catches on something when twisting the stick to its extremes, although I don't tend to get it while playing as I don't tend to use Yaw to the full extent that often. It did also start to squeak a little after use when pitching and rolling, but I will look to get some graphite lube on it.

Will need some getting used to all the dials and switches, I have just been using it in the default setup so far, apart from moving deploy hardpoints to the pinky button on the stick. It seems that the bind for that and a few other controls were duplicated in the standard X55 setup?

I am also not entirely convinced yet by using one of the thumb hats on the throttle for lateral and vertical thrusters, I did find it a bit more awkward when landing compared to my old setup. Maybe I just need to get used to it more, but it felt too easy to nudge it in the wrong direction at a critical moment in a tight space.

Overall, I'm very impressed with it, the throttle feels super smooth and easy to make tiny adjustments, and I was immediately more accurate with the stick.

Try to use one of the hat switches (by your thumb) on the throttle for the lateral thrust. I find those to be better than using the ones on top of the stick.
As for the noise as you move your stick, give it a bit of time to wear in. Mine is completely silent now, except a little click type of noise at the end of the travel when twisting the stick.
I can not hear it because I have headphones on but I can feel it.
I will do the graphite lubing to see if it makes a difference but I am happy with it the way it is anyways.
I've plugged in my aging Logitech stick the other day just to see how that feels after using the X-55 for a bit now, and I couldn't hit anything with the Logitech.

The spring really depends on whether or not you're bolting the stick down. If you are bolting it, which I would definitely recommend, then go with the green.

When I use the smallest spring my stick does not actually return to center.

It just kind of flops to the side like a sad giraffe :p :S

Is this normal?

No definitely not normal.
I am using the same spring and mine returns to center perfectly fine.
Check to see if the spring is seated properly

Yea, mine seems dodgy then...

This is with the yellow spring, auto return to center after full left

This is with the red spring after full left

I have tried a few times, I think the spring is set just fine...

I have read quite a lot of reports of this happening. The disk on which the springs rest 'stick' to the joystick shaft. Some people have fixed it with some filing of the inside of the ring, others fixed it with some lubricant.

As above, it is just where the base plate for the spring is sticking slightly on the main shaft. You just need to apply a little graphite lock lubricant and it'll be fine.

As promised earlier;

Apply a little bit of lube on the shaft above the base plate - don't use too much. If you're using the little lock lubricant spray then a little squirt either side of the shaft will do it.

Then push the stick forward to raise the base plate and spin it round a few times to spread the lube, then re-attach the spring and stick. It'll now work fine with any spring, and will centre correctly even with the small red.
