Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

If the choice was between significantly enhancing the SP game or adding MP, it would be SP all the way for me.

Then again, private servers would be a very sensible move - assuming there was a point to doing things as a group.

HG need support from Sony at this point, I find that people always gloss over the fact that HG are a TINY dev studio.....just look at the credits section of the game!!

HG need to start communicating a bit though....they've gone from one extreme (talking TOO much) to the other (not talking enough).

I think HG know that most of the effort to destroy the games reputation has come from people upset over that whole two players meeting not seeing each other event and what that meant about the game vs what they hoped for and expected. I think they know the Steam forums in particular got swamped by that. So they have decided to not talk about the game at all, as anything they do say, even if they were to suddenly announce working MP and PvP, is simply going to attract more negative reactions. The level of bile and hate is so high it just does not matter now.

So they are just getting on with updating the game as they always said they would (and have been) and after enough silence most of those haters will have moved on to their latest new shiny distraction game of the month and forgotten all about NMS.

I 'think' the strategy is to provide zero content for haters to keep fuelling themselves on (they are sort of getting tired about hating on the silence already for the most part, getting board of that etc) and just do what they do as developers, work on the game and release updates.

I can't fault that strategy as i think at this point (still) saying anything at all just fuels the hate. The Hate has become it's own side child to what NMS is for many people.

They should release patch notes with each update though, i don't like their working method of doing patch notes later, it makes it hard to follow changes and make a choice about updating or not, for those playing the game (obviously the haters will not care as they do not play).

The downside to this strategy is that with zero communication you will lose players interest, and that is happening if you go on the Steam numbers alone. The Sony guy from that recent interview did not seem too bothered so maybe the PS4 player numbers are still ok?

Anyway as i play off-line completely this does not bother me at all, there will be others not here for any kind of MP and during development when the type of MP was being discussed i had a few conversations with other gamers that did not even like the idea of other people changing names in their game, so were going to play SP exclusively, there might be many that play like that? The Steam numbers and Steam culture around NMS is it's own thing perhaps.

Still zero communication will lose you players, however NMS being what it is (a huge canvass to do whatever on) over time there is no reason not to think of it like with Minecraft, a game that evolved over a very long-time and got better and more interesting most of the time. The foundations (talking what is in the code we can see so far) of NMS make it a great game for building upon and i think that was by design. Hello Games obviously saw this as a long-term vehicle for them, and it really will just depend on what kind of content comes first and if that will be enough to win people around again? The haters are gone, forget about them and their concerns nothing will bring them back at this point, but those that left just because of zero communication or after putting in a few hundred hours and needing more content, they can be won back.

I think any game, no matter how simple people think it is, can be ruined by 'other people'. ED is a good example, solo play is better. SC is unfortunately the same at the moment and probably won't change.
Bad MP does plague lots of games, private servers are by far the best option, then you can play your games with like-minded people.
I play Arma in a group with a private server, its a very different experience from a public one, that is for sure.
[yesnod]

Yup, I've never really bothered with open because of the chance of meeting somebody I frankly find repugnant (like from SDC) online. I'm SP all the way. If SC sorts out crime and punishment (unlike Elite) for PVP actions it may work (if it ever gets released) but I got it more for SQ42.

Back in Feb I bought an 8 pack in the steam sales of a load of ARMA games, havn't even installed them yet!! Just don't have the time.

Thing is for MP and private servers to mean anything MP gameplay would have to be created, I can't see how current gameplay offer much for MP. And I don't want HG wasting time on stuff like that.

Makes sense letting all the hoohah die down and having only the fanatical Prep H users to keep the complaints going. Agreed about patch notes, that's an area where FD are fantastic, it's really impressive to see those huge lists!

I'm not sure if it's "hate" anymore....to me it's just extreme "butthurt" , hissy fits and toys out of pram stuff. Incredibly Juvenile if I'm honest, just looking at some of the stuff on Steam I'm amazed these people are educated beyond Infant school level.

If they can get the game now to look like how it did in that e3 vid then I'll be happy, I just don't want too much MP in, then again I can just go offline as I stopped renaming stuff a Loooooooooooooooong time ago (just systems and planets no flora and fauna and no genitalia references either) !!

This about sums up the majority of the issue, and why i've become a vocal supporter of the game, the level of 'Trumpism' in the hate brigade needs standing up to. Sure the game is not the perfect game we all wanted, but +200 hours in and i'm still having a great time (now making mods too!) and it is the only game i've been playing since getting it.

And they are still working on the game (the non haters know the truth of that, but it is good to share with the haters), the internal build was updated earlier (Nov 10):

I quite like how NMS looks now. I was looking around yesterday and the environment suits the style they went for, just my view. Colours are vibrant and the features that planets have seem right to me, for that art style. Of course everything can be improved on and I hope they do improve it. But as it stands its pretty good, I really like it.

Critters wise... well.. perhaps they could have left some of the critters out, opting for the insect critters instead. But most are fairly good, insect ones are particularly good.
Bouncing mushrooms etc are there for kids, its a game for most ages, so I haven't got a problem with that.

But colour & views wise, its nice.

Have you steen the negatieve reviews of any other game on Steam? User reviews are garbage for all games, just ignore it.

As do the delusional.

I am not a hater nor have I posted as such, but blind fanaticism by some in this thread is laughable.

The facts of the issue are that SM lied about the game and it's content and the public whipped the remaining information to ungodly heights.

They (HGs / SM) have to accept some responsibility for their actions but rather than own up and move on they hide behind closed doors.

Put in about 70 hours myself ... had fun .. moved on but hoping for some new content.

Interesting reaction to a recent interview with a Sony exec about the whole deal:

Basically Pat is calling on the Exec claiming that "we shouldn't stifle ambition", since arguably ambition was not the problem here. Also Sony cannot claim that they had no oversight, which is kinda what they're doing.

"Sony didn't know"

Good reaction video - thank you.

Agree with him as well - "if you're going to back a small indie company and attempt to make money off them better make sure they deliver what was promised" - indeed.

Neither mine nor my missus enjoyment of the game (as of patch v1.7 which was when i got the game) is a delusion. We don't just sit there for hours on end having a delusional good time.

I can do that in ED if i want to, but it is not such a great delusion simulation ;) (sorry yes that was a low blow, ED is a great game at what it does it is just not (yet) my kind of Elite game).

HG have wisely realised that nothing they say publicly will make any difference, not now or for a good while, all they can actually do is improve the game and hope players will come back. And why would they want to engage with the game community after the hostility they have been shown? There is only a net negative in relation to the effort it would take, you will not make the haters go away by talking to them, only fixing and improving the base game will count for anything now.

I understand before NMS came out (and it is part of the reason for the backlash) there were huge 'white knighters' roaming around the internet blasting all concerns about NMS and anyone that would question it being the best game of all time. And they got way out of hand. I do not hang around the Steam forums (well i do a little now to better understand the psychology of the haters around NMS, but it is infrequent data gathering trips) or places like Kokatu or Neogaf where the largest game forums reside, those places are not really my thing (most of the time). But all that kind of behaviour, just as with the anti-nms stuff is not representative of my interest in games. I like or dislike a game purely based on what i can get out of the game playing it. For all the stuff missing from NMS it is not that bad a game.

I'm disappointed it does not have some of the things mentioned during development, but also i know that game dev is often quite a random chance thing, many games down the years have surprised us with their success or failure, and getting everything just right to produce your vision is as much science as magic sometimes. Hello Games did not get that mix right, but it seems from what we did get that they were trying.

Would i have loved no sky boxes? Sure, but the current smoke and mirrors work well enough that as a feature it is not 100% essential.

Would i have loved planet rotations? Sure, but even with those massively dialled down you can still come across things on planet that are difficult to get too, i assume due to the slow rotation of the planet (difficult to say as you have no feedback in the UI to tell you) or maybe just one of the games bugs?

All that aside, i'm just not finding the levels of drama, hair pulling and toys-out-off-pram throwing that seems to dominate the NMS discussions. The game is ok (a bit 'lite' in a casual kind of way), quite excellent and unique in some ways (planet discovery/exploration) and certainly worth the £40 i paid for it, just based on the number of hours of enjoyment i'm getting from it, i can't 'pretend' this is not the case.

It does however require one mod as an essential addition to enjoy the game more (and in fact a bunch of mods improve it a whole bunch), so you do need the Low Flight (or better, the Spaceflight Overhaul that includes Low Flight) mod to get over the most obvious problem the game was shipped with. If you got it on PS4, sorry about that, ask Sony to do something maybe?
-------------------

We had an update to the internal build yesterday, so they are working on it. As long as that continues i can only see NMS staying on my PC as it will only get better (i hope).

define "lied" it pretty much means "knowingly mislead"....do you honestly think none of this stuff was ever in the game and SM and HG deliberately and knowingly misled Sony and the public then released a game without caring for the consequences? That doesn't jive with me and what I've seen and heard about them.

And the only "fanaticism" I've seen is in relation to the hatred towards the game.

The game has problems myself, Zak and cpb have stated as much several times, all we do is post that we enjoy the game and we get attacked and called names and our opinions are slagged off....<shakes head>

Yes HG and SM have to take responsibility for what happened, but what exactly DID happen, does anyone know? There is about as much conjecture and reading between the lines POST release as there was pre-release. The only real mistakes I've seen are those regarding marketing and who here thinks a small 10 person dev studio from the UK has the marketing clout to promote the game to the levels it was promoted?

Well I've hit the big two hundred hours. God knows if other have put in more. Play HAS tailed off the past month, but I'm still being drawn back in to the game. For me personally worth every penny, only mods I have are the speedy menu one, more underwater time and the chromatic one. I did have low level flight but took it off as I'm mainly playing "on foot" so if I see something good I just hit "X" and down I go.

Only issue I (still) have is the flickering grass, disabling steam overlay didn't make much of a difference if any on that one.

Define "lied" ?

noun
1.
a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood.
Synonyms: prevarication, falsification.
Antonyms: truth.
2.
something intended or serving to convey a false impression; imposture:
His flashy car was a lie that deceived no one.
3.
an inaccurate or false statement; a falsehood.

4.
the charge or accusation of telling a lie:
He flung the lie back at his accusers.

SM stated numerous times various features would be in game but in fact are not.

Whether the intention was for them to be in and "something" happened that made them not be is moot; nothing came out from HGs studio to say otherwise so right now, given the amount of facts about the game & quotes from SM / HGs they lied.

Intentional ? .. don't know ... Features pulled ? No idea .. Lied ? Definitely.

That said - given what we have is No Mans Sky a good game ? IMO yes, it's a great game, and based upon what we have it has potential, but that doesn't change the fact that some still feel misled. The insane denials in this thread (and elsewhere) are what fuels the problem (along with many other things that I have not gone into for brevity)

At this point you may feel that nothing can be said by HGs but I disagree - Admit they messed up; outline what you're doing about it; deliver on said outline; problem slowly starts to go away as people learn that SM/HGs can be true to their word .. right now - sack of liars.

Its a great game to return to after a break. When I go into it, I sort of think, what a great thing they have done here. We all know the ups and downs of the game, but overall its a fine PG example, imo.

I also have around 200hrs in and loved every minute. I would like to see some things go in, not really those that were missing, but more to do with making the game a little more challenging. At the moment its a very easy game to survive in.

Mod wise, yep, I got rid of the low fly, but I always run the 'no fog' & 'chromatic' plus the 'steady cam', I like the flying in pulse much better with that on.

I hope the game improves, I do believe they will make changes, certainly hope so anyway.

I agree the fanaticism is more from the people that hate the game, the players simply enjoy whats there. If it was not advertised at all and I saw it on YT as it is now, I would certainly part with the amount I did part with. The game is well worth that for the exploration and art style.

Edit: Leper & Zak, have some virtual rep, as I can't rep either of you again, yet. ;) Liqua, you have some virutal rep too, can't rep you either yet. But you have valid points.
The thing is, we can all post regards the game, we all know it has things missing, but we're not going to get those things back arguing about it. It is what it is, until it changes its a case of enjoy, or leave alone for a while, or for good. Depends on how you feel, just like any other game. :)

Yeah third option out of 3, number 1 is the meaning of the word most people are using. I.E. HG lied with deliberate intent to deceive, I don't think they did.

If the features were pulled then they did not lie and you state you have no idea if the features were pulled or not yet you adamantly continue with the "lie" statement. Either you KNOW nothing was pulled and HG "lied" or you do NOT know and thus do NOT know they lied.

Glad you ultimately like the game though, just rethink the whole "lie" thing. I think HG and SM were talking about what they were planning to get in the game and that doesn't make it right what they did, I'm not saying that, but I think it was actually a normal process in games development. Developers WILL talk about what they have in their latest internal build, whether that ends up in the final release is usually NOT a done deal!

hehe this rep system is a bit of a       , can't let someone know you like their post without actually doing this and replying!

The thing is, in this scenario lying by omission is a case of willfully misleading people.

I remember Murray telling people not to judge the game based on those early release streams, he alluded that there was significant content coming in the day 1 patch. That was another case of lying to people with the intent to mislead them.

I find it bizarre that anyone can attempt to make excuses for the way he has behaved.
