Interesting how Star Marine went from "core gameplay mechanic that will blow away the competition" to "you know, it's just one mechanic in a massive space mmo so it does't have to be as impressive as we hoped for" in a timespan of 48 hours.

Edit: @FrostyPaw pretty sure I've seen the vault on the stream as well... as I remember feeling annoyed at the fact that the camera angles pretty much obscured everything except the initial animation :x
Sure feels like he's falling through the top of that yellow box (which would explain the confused looking around for an exit when he lands) but even at 0.25x speed I can't back a claim like that up in any way due to the camera cuts, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

In my opinion, the animations were jerky, grenade tosses didn't seem to properly line up with their animations, the gunplay looked clunky (though that's obviously a matter of taste) and the gameplay was pretty uninspired.
In general, I'm glad to see they've got it to work in their FrankenEngine, but I seriously hope/am pretty sure this is not something anyone has been working on for the past 24 months :x

As others have mentioned, it's funny how before Star Marine was going to be a CoD killer and now it's a disabled CoD clone instead and "that's all it was ever going to be lol"

This is so pathetic

Queue the "we never claimed it would be the BEST damn spacesim ever"-excuse for when 3.0 eventually comes out.

The rabid fans told people to not even bother with other games because star citizen was gonna be the last game they ever need. (Btw dsmart was guilty of the same thing way back ;) )

I'm not so sure, those few whales are keeping CIG afloat by buying 2000$ ships, and I can't imagine them stopping funding them.

It appears as though support for Star Citizen will continue to dwindle as the amount those supporters are willing to pledge increases. Soon there will be a 1:1 parity with the game development team and the backers. I think at that point it will be a good time to switch funding models.

They should do what the do at zoos, the backers should adopt a game developer. The game developer could send letters to the backer to show the work he did that day, and maybe a holiday postcard when the game developer takes his family to Disneyland.

CIG is like a Cameleon in hunt.....they just trying to adopt to the current environment before they catch and eat that litlle bug.........After the anniversary night many backers start to asking question about the Star Marine and all previous talks from CR that this is going to be shooter with more tactical approach, kind like Arma series.....well...what we saw it was just run&gun generic shooter with no tactics what so ever that is way more similar to the COD series when it comes to the realism but way worse when it comes to the playability....to cut the chase now the CIG dev. trying to explain why does Star Marine looks like this https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/comments/5dpf41/thoughts_on_star_marine/

In short... So we will make adjustments to make Star Marine thrilling, exciting, and tactical as pitched :) We'll get it!!!....but yeah we will need just a bit more money.....and yeah time.....+ more time....+ just a bit more money.....but don´t worry and buy an IDRIS!!!

Hi all,

We've got lots of stuff to talk about with Star Marine recorded for various features, I think ATV this week will have some deeper dives on various features but I'm not 100% on when it goes out.

One thing that is cropping up a lot is the TTK amount so I'll give a few quick answers here. First up is that in the livestream everyone was using Medium Armor, so the TTK is much higher than what you all experience currently in 2.5.0. Armor will and does increase your survivability and works no differently between Star Marine and the PU, its just you don't tend to run into that many people with medium armor currently out in the verse.

Flight suits give you the best movement speeds with the least stamina penalty with no damage reduction, pretty much 1-2 torso shots and you are dead. Light armor improves that a little with a small reduction in speed/stamina and gives you maybe another torso shot or two, there are so many variables I cant give hard numbers as it depends on the ammo hitting you, the range between the two of you, your current health state, are you bleeding etc. Obviously Medium armor is another step up and Heavy a step beyond that.

So whilst Star Marine is more "arcadey" its not really from the game mechanics, those try to be identical between SM and the PU else it doesnt really give you a good grounding for the PU. The arcade elements come from other factors such as the game mode types and values such as spawn rates, obviously if you only have to wait 15s between lives and getting back into the action its a different mind set to 'Death of a Spaceman' in the PU where there is a much bigger penalty and you play differently.

Lastly of course, this is just the first preview of the first release, we have lots of plans to improve what was shown already and more content to deliver.

The question would be: how much longer does it take them, and how much will it cost? I mean, they have raised 130 mil, yet are asking for more (selling horribly expensive ships). Imagine being asked to fork over 200 quids for an Anaconda...

Given everything, I'm happy I haven't given them any money.

Seriously?

To get SC to 1.0 even in minimal amount will take them 200M, no less. Squadron 42 will burn rest of finances they have I am sure (due of them rushing it out ASAP).

Despite what SC fans might think, overall everything is pretty bleak even with shown footage. How they will get out of this self-inflicted mess remains to be seen.

Because of this we have been reticent to share our internal timelines, even with caveats, as it always seems to cause trouble; one section of the community gets annoyed because things are perceived as late while another gets annoyed wondering why we shared dates at all if they aren’t solid.

You're absolutely right Chris.
Except wait, no, actually that doesn't make any sense. We're not miffed because we perceive something as late that isn't - you are late and what was shown wasn't up to snuff.
And if you share dates and they turn out to not be solid, guess what? Maybe you shouldn't change your project scope all the time and play catch-up with whatever game is released that month. Or abandon major parts of the game, then claim they're already in there, then do a full 360 and start work on them again.

Make a plan.

Execute it.

Track its progress.

And you'll find that people will be much more forgiving for being late. Frontier is hella late too. But they're not pulling the FPS part ahead, then abandoning it shortly before release ("weeks, not months"), then suddenly working on it again while working on re-shoots of the re-shoots in their own mocap studio they built after having booked the Imaginarium for several weeks.

We know nothing about game development, and the time stuff takes.

Unfortunately, neither does Chris... :(

My all-time favorite excuse is when backers try to use the "he's a perfectionist" argument. Which doesn't explain the crappy patches, missed schedules, lies etc. One would think that a perfectionist would strive for that in all areas. But what I do know, right? I'm just a semi-retired jealous failed autistic nobody gamedev who knows nothing about game development.

Yeah, all these excuses...

I still don't see what's the point of Space Marine. Both AC and SM were meant to be mini games which were there to supposedly test mechanics. However, they are more or less playable demos so they can keep collecting crowdfunding resources.

It's the integration fallacy. What Chris Roberts just doesn't understand is that you can't develop 3 different parts of a game in a vacuum and then just sew them together.

You can be perfectionist, and know nothing about subject matter you try to work with. It is really very weak defense, and actually means he can't figure out how to make things work in real life. If I was perfectionist, I would hire best people for task, and would try to work hard to ensure they have everything they need, everyone is on same page and everything runs smoothly like well oiled engine. None of these things are true about Chris. He is not a perfectionist, he's control freak.
