An investigation into Frontier's actions on Combat Logging

Honestly, the quickest and easiest way for FD to clear this all up would be to simply state that regardless of how it happened, a dropped network connection is not considered cheating or exploiting. Problem solved.

As far as support not being staffed sufficiently to deal with the issue (if in fact that is the case) there's a fairly obvious solution there. Yes more staff cost money but reputational damage does too and it's hard to counter. For example, anybody think Hello Games' next title is going to be Steam's top seller before release..?

Exactly my point. So why are you people doing this?

In your blind and stupid attempt to mitigate combat logging you might irreversibly damage Frontiers reputation and Elite's development.

For fricks sake, you are playing with fire. This is why people are getting upset. Hello Games and NMS are proof that this is not a good idea.

g think before you act people. God dammit.

Folk like SDC create situation where players feel the need to combat log so they still enjoy the game, they then complain about it continuing the griefing into the support system. FDev ignore it.

Which is more important? The vast majority enjoying the game or a handful being right?

Factually they may be in the wrong, but practically speaking they could well be very right.

was that meant to be ego?

SDC is playing within the rules in a manner supported by FDev. Combat loggers are breaking the rules and using an exploit NOT supported by FDev.

That's all that really matters, how you feel about the way SDC conducts themselves is irrelevant.

And whats with the OP, starts this crap off the goes MIA, you would think he would be here defending his crusade.

Consider the problem: combat loggers repeatedly cheat & exploit, with repeat-offenders regularly spotted, yet FDev state they take action against them. How do you prove what happens one way or another? I would say the OP and their friends did it the correct and only way: a sting op.

I would actually agree with you if the situation was as one-sided as it's made to sound. Even with the situation as it is, I might be more charitable towards the OP et al if their motivation for wanting to stop combat logging was something other than being upset that victims of their griefing are able to escape.

Making the topic about Frontier lying is just misdirection as far as I'm concerned. Does anybody believe the people who did this would be any happier if Frontier was honest and said "we're not punishing players for combat logging for the time being, hopefully the complex issues around it will be able to be solved at some point in the future"?

My impression is not of importance. As a moderator (of multiple subreddits) I check the public profile of everyone I feel the need to communicate with. It always adds relevant subtext to their communications, and aids me in my responses.

As a moderator of a few forums over the years, I've found that people who check another user's profile during a disagreement and bring up their registration date are usually looking for a way to silence somebody rather than debate them. But neither of us are moderators here, so my impression is not of importance either.

No. egg. corrected.

What is there to defend? All the proof is there, just read it and form your own opinion. He doesn't need to be here to hold your hand.

And many of us disagree.

But lets say OP was right, and FDev did lie. What does this achieve? It still drives a wedge between Frontier and the Community. Its stuff like this that kills games.
People complain that Solo and PG are killing Elite, but it is posts like these that will really truly kill Elite.
I like this game. I don't want to see it go the way of the Dodo because you and OP want to prove that FDev lied.

That explains why the subreddit is a toxic s**thole, aside from it being on reddit(which is a toxic s**thole).

Good point. This logging is certainly a problem for PVP, but most don't play PVP so there are many more issues that affect all player that demand more attention imo.

Exactly, this is an attempt to see how much damage they can do. It's malicious plain and simple.

The last thing I want to see is an open letter from FDev next week apologizing for wasting everyones time and explaining that Elites development will no longer continue.
*long strong list of insults at OP and their supporters*

Proof rubish, the only thing it proves is the OP is an idiot wasting valuble tech support time on his big idea, there are players with real problems that may miss out because of this troll. looks like the whole frakkin circus is in town.

Ignoring a problem doesn't get it resolved. Proving a problem exists and creating drama around it has been shown to get Dev action. The OP has proved that FDev lied. What I, and many commenters in this thread & elsewhere want, is for the issue to be resolved.

Please explain: why would discussion of this Dev-ignored topic (since early 2015) kill the game?

Hahahaha! It's a voluntary moderator's job to check history, how else can we expect to moderate with context? "he's insulted that person! Nope, they're friends, it's banter. Approved" ;)

Many CMDRs move to the ED Reddit from the forums (as I did in general two years ago; it has a wider range of playstyle opinion). A substantial proportion (majority of community news) of the weekly ED newsletter is Reddit sourced (the subreddit is #2 to the forums, with ~50% of the daily traffic but more public visibility). And the gaming media use overall Reddit to source news, information and public opinion (Reddit.com is the world's #26 most visited website). Nah, it must be that Reddit is the toxic place. Hmmm, Reddit does hate cheaters though...

Sorry, you musta missed it.

Your issue is not with how I feel about it, but the feelings of others who I'm afraid aren't here to dismiss as irrelevant. I'm not sure using your mates to collect bounties on your head or doing the suicidewinder is particularly in the spirit of how they want the game played either, but we'll focus on the people who don't want to play with you for now to keep it all neat and tidy.

Maybe it's your inflexible brain that has trouble comprehending what I'm saying. That's your low level thinking at work here. I'm not contradicting myself in the slightest. What I am saying is that I no longer hold following the rules in the same regard as I did before on account of a recent change. For most circumstances I will remain the same (never have combat logged before), but not when it comes to a mechanic that is inconsistent with the rest of the game and in my opinion, more than a simple inconvenience. I am attached to my crew and come hell or high water I will do what I can to keep them alive (including cheat) until FD sees fit to give them the goddamned escape pod they deserve.

So why start now? What makes you any better then any other logger before you? Get off your moral high horse except that if your part of the problem now. If you log no matter how you try to justify it your still logging and should be treated the same. Oh by the way thanks for the insults really classy, really strengthens your argument.

I'm confused with your two sided post, you must rant with one side and this is not a FREE TO PLAY game, people will ask for errors.

There's nothing "two-sided" about what I stated. I'm just tired of hearing the same old whining by "PvP players" who insist on some instancing exploits should be treated as ban-able offences while they daily go along exploiting other instancing flaws.

Reddit hates cheaters?....lol....just like they don't have piracy threads with the latest crack status on games.....your numbers are big on Reddit because it's a place where you can get away with being a ......

Good joke. Made me lol this morning.
I really like hearing how mode invaders (and I believe as some have posted, sometime ago though I can't recall now, combat loggers,) are playing within the rules. Do you mean that they only play within the rules supported by FDev that they like?

As for FDev lying. Who knows? Did this Combat logging posted by the OP all happen in Open? Probably the 2nd test did.

I would really like if FDev policed the game more too.
1. Complete ban mode invaders
2. Shadow ban Combat loggers in Open

You're very welcome. They are true as well. As for your rhetorical question, it was in fact already answered. Incidentally this brings up the topic of your reading comprehension. You should try to get gud at reading. It comes in handy more often than you'd think.

define combat logging: forcefully quitting the program or internet connection when your in a losing situation.. theres a few problems here. 1: what if you genuinely lose connection. 2: what if you have a power cut. 3: what if the instancing is out of sync? 4: what if your connection is garbage anyway ie bad ping, bad jitter.

FD cant tell if anyone forcefully pulled their connection through any logs they have, they dont know if sun1s power went, connection went down, psu blew up, drivers stopped or jesus turned their hdd into wine - not possible. they wont risk banning an innocent player through no fault of his/her own - how would you like it?

had a cmdr in supercruise a few week ago pull into position behind me, i knew he was going to interdict me and he was in an FDL, i didn't mind i was flying my combat fitted, tanked + engineered cutter and was just waiting for it :) the interdiction never came but then text appeared saying 'nice bug' .... ?? i didnt do anything, not my fault tbings don't work as intended. imo the 15 second timer should be extended to 20-30 seconds but is that fair on people who really do lose connection/power or hdds turn into wine at a bad time.
