SHIP TRANSFER - Way too expensive / Jumping for hours = WASTE of time

What ships do you ship? If you ship a Corvette for 18 mio. credits, I think you're not using that feature very often. With my 160 mio. credits in my account and a very high rebuy rate, I really think twice if I can afford to use ship transfer. You do it only 5 times and spent 60 to 80 mio. credits? Really, is that how it is supposed to be? How many hours, days or even weeks does it take you to earn that money? It's not balanced. Shipping tiny ships is cheap, I'd do that 20 times per week. But 20 times Corvette is more than I own. So, the feature is blocked for me as it's way too expensive.

as several times said by several posters in this thread, you COULD use a cheaper, smaller ship to PLAY the game without that CR-WALL moving your corvette. a corvette IS NOT REQUIRED to play ED, to take part in a CG, or whatever. i have an eagle, dbs, courier for that case, other posted the suggesting of a specialized viper etc.

you CAN even put together a courier or DBS for a jumprange of >29 ly, and not transport any ship.

but you want to transfer your corvette in no time for no CR anywhere in the bubble.

well, you can want that, but that has nothing to do with general balance of transfer costs and time.

(the feature was originally announced with a vulture. works great with a vulture ;-) )

Current transfer seems fine, it was never meant to be something so you could speed over with one ship and get another quick and easy, it is transfer, with cost and time associated as it should be, it is far from unreasonable in my book, people seem to forget what they are actually asking, especially those complaining about colonia transfer.

So yeah..

Ooooh, the fanboy base. Folks, if you like to waste your time in a useless game loop, fine. This game sucks. Gameplay sucks. Jumping for ages and gigantic grind loops are not gameplay. It s simply a bad game.

Sure. Have fun out there. Seriously. I don't want to play this game to get angry. Why would I?

.... balance..... Wonder what that means. Perhaps it is to prevent loss of 'immersion' ;-)

Dude, that's cool. I could also buy a Viper and stay in a station all day and listen to the station announcements. I could also drive around on a planet forever. Could, should, hood. That's a funny post that you generated. I could also play Battlefield 1 all day instead of Elite. You're absolutely right. ;-)

yes, i love to fly a courier. neither can a courier fit large or huge hardpoints, nor can i fit 700t of cargo into the ship. i could fly my cutter. what a bad gamedesign.

I have a bit more than 160 mio credits in my account. It's not that I want this service once, I want to use it regulary to reduce the jump screen time. 18 million for 1 delivery is insane. That means, not only that I have to grind many hours for the rebuy costs, another time intensive grind opened up now as well if you want to ship your ship. That's not very well planned and contradicts the (well ment) idea of ship transfer. I get my corvette shipped 5 times and spent around 100 million credits? That's what we are talking about here. How many hours do I have to grind for that amount. That means, you ship ANYTHING above a Python will let you grind for a week or more. Nope. Not well implemented. As mentioned, the initial idea was to give the game more flow, make it more accessible and less time consuming. But it totally failed (unless you ship your Cobra or whatever).
Given how fast people can earn credits now, even without the big things as sothis, is it really insane asking someone to transfer your ship several hundred light years that they demand that much if the ship is very valuable? seems reasonable to me. Course to many distance in elite is just x amount of jumps, and rarely considering the actual scale of the game? unfortunately.

I really like ship transfer. It does what it says on the tin. If I need to transfer a ship I do it just before I log off and it's there when I start playing again.

Seems a mismatch somewhere - you have a Corvette and a Conda ?:O And you are complaining about a grind to get to a CG? Just how did you manage to achieve those two ships in the first place? :S

Declaration - I presently only own an Anaconda 6-pack paint job, purchased in the Black Friday sale. :p

Is there a requirement to stop playing while the ship is transferred?

.... or is the ship one has chosen to travel in completely useless for any other purpose than fast transit?

No there isn't, neither did i imply there was.
Of course you don't just sit that and stare down the clock, and if anyone chooses to then that's their own call.
But the "you don't have to sit and wait for it"-argument just dodges the question.
What purpose does the delay serve ? What are it's benefits ? Or what damage would be done if there wasn't one, and to whom or what would this damage been done ?
Which "greater goal" is being served by separating a player from one of his ships for 20 hours, instead of 2 or even none ?
If at least there was an interesting logistics sub game to be played here.
But you can only summon a ship to the place where you currently are.
If you wanted to go to jaques, you can't even send your ship there in advance.
To top it off, the costs (from the examples i've seen) are prohibitive for all but the richest and most veteran players.
Funny enough it's often those players advising others "not to grind and just have fun", while at the same time transfer costs are just one more powerful incentive to grind credits.
As i stated in other threads on this topic, none of this affects me and my fleet of 2, but a useful or well thought out QoL improvement this is not....save for a few

The initial idea of ship transfer was to make the game more "playable", erasing the need to taxi between stations and seeing endless jump screens (=waste of time).

I went to the CG on Monday with my Conda and wanted to transfer my Corvette to get into action. It would have take more than 45 (!) minutes in my Corvette just to GET to the action becore I could actually do what I wanted to. So I took my Conda and it still took a lot of time and I literally was exhausted jumping dozens of times. I simply was not in the mood to play anymore as this useless and frustrating jumping bored me to death and the evening I planed to play this game was actually not about playing but more navigating my ship to the action. Then at least I wanted to get my Corvette to be shipped there for the next evening so I can start an Elite session with actually playing the game. The costs were around 18 (!!!!!!!) million credits. That's insane. And the time was ridiculously long.

So, what was planned to make the game more playable finally turned into a cash barrier (and time). I voted for a bit of a time gap but HELL NO! Not for a time and cash intensiv cash transfer. Another GREAT example of a total failure. Good initial though and approach by FDev, then totally crushed by the community and FDev itself.

AWESOME! This game sucks so hardcore.

70% community vote this system, this is how democracy works, sorry.

It would have cost more if it was instant travel. I don't mind the time myself, I think it's fine. I have used it a number of times. Couldn't you use your annaconda for what you planned to do?

Transfer time is not that bad, maybe numbers could be tweaked but not that much. Actual cost seems a bit high though, bit If you can afford a corvette you shouldn't whine too much. The transfer service is optional after all...
I'm sure you realize no single solution would make everyone happy. The stuff you'd love would be hated by someone else. If you think game sucks too much, then maybe its time to stop playing...

from my experience, it serves several purposes:

- it doesn't damage the topography of space. if you move to quince (system out of the bubble) for exampel, it still is a journey, and your ships are still far away (as everything else)

- it works as an incentive, to do the right job in the wrong ship. want to do that passenger mission, but your orca or python is 15 minutes away? fit a passenger rack on your fdl. there is that CZ mission, but ship transfer of your combat ship would take 20 minutes? take your trading cutter into a combatzone. provides very nice challenges and obstacles.

- it serves the purpose of having and flying several ships of all sizes. want to have a combat ship which can travel? build a courier or DBS. want to have a combat ship which is really cheap to transfer? build an eagle or viper...

- it serves the purpose not to get rid of any planning aspect of the sim part of ED.

- it serves the purpose to provide game situations in which you have to make a decision. do i take part in that CG or do i stay here? do i take my trader or my multipurpose ship?

Which "greater goal" is being served by separating a player from one of his ships for 20 hours, instead of 2 or even none ?

i recently had some ships transferred 500 ly (to quince). 80 minutes. not sure how you come to think that it takes 20 hours on the regular. i guess the only destination which beats 2 hours is jaques/colonia ...

OP, just do as i did: transfer all your ship to Sol and never use it ever again :D

The feature is broken because it doesn't serve its original purpose: breaking the time sink wall that hides the actual gameplay (remember the T9 / CZ thing ?). People seem to forget it was the original intent.

How many time have i been in this scheme:

- Boot the game
- Realise that i can't do what i planned because the ship i own for the job is 15 / 20 loading screens away.
- Realise that after my day at work, i don't have enough energy and patience left to deal with the frustration
- Turn off game, browse forums / reddit

Is this normal? I don't think so. I have spent 1000 + hours in this game, i guess at least half of it travelling in SC or jumping. I didn't encounter this problem before because when i was a beginner, there was a LOT of new things to learn / see / try, and it kept me hooked.

Now that i have done pretty much everything, i wish i could simply enjoy my time and the result of my investment in the game (aka using my ships FREELY) without having to face gameplay walls like this.

Funny, the original thing people were asking for is pretty spot on exactly what we got. The Insta transfer was a strange suggestion fd made that came wholly out of left field.
It also saves heaps of time and effort (for me anyway) and is fairly strategically useful. I have my fleet almost designed around the mechanic, with lighter options that will serve in a pinch and some larger, multirole travelers that I tend to use myself unless the convenience overshadows the costs which they sometimes do when I'm moving to different engineers. You don't like how it works and that your opinion so I won't knock it, but don't say it was the "original intent" because it wasn't. That was a tacked on and poorly thought out suggestion by fdev. It's also clearly not broken. It works very well. This game has always required preplanning to succeed. From travel to loadouts. The transfer mechanic is entirely in line with this. It isn't intended to be a pocket carrier. That would shatter what little balance we have in the game.

Working as intended for me.

Example: I went to one system in my combat Python, I decided to do some exploration, so I called my Asp over and while I was waiting, I went to a RES.

Honestly, I think this ship transfer works perfectly if you don't play the game any differently than you did before - i.e. don't use ultra long range taxi ships that are useless at the task for which you went to the system So, for example, don't cross the bubble deliberately in a stripped bare taxiconda, just to call over your 13LY jump combat Corvette, because you've essentially forced yourself into sitting around doing nothing while you wait, because your taxiconda isn't fit to use for any other task.

Personally, I don't go somewhere intending to then use ship transfer to drag another ship along - I just use it as and when the need arises, and maybe do some missions or something else in the meantime. Honestly, doing that, the time for your ship to arrive just disappears - I didn't even notice that my Asp had arrived, for example.

Indeed. The only exception is if you do this before logging off. Take the fast traveler out a planned trip, order in the ship and go do RL. Next playtime everything is positioned as you planned. Hmmmm, planning. Not sure why it's such a dirty word to some.
