ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Horizons for PS4

We’ve worked hard to make Elite Dangerous the richest space simulation ever.

Right down to the intergalactic space speed limit of a slow taxiing velocity! Always dreamt of launching your own personal high-performance spaceship, opening the throttles and... just sitting there, wondering why you're not moving? Dream no more, now it can be accurately simulated! The future has finally arrived!. Send money now.

lucky PS4 T flight Hotas x has a newer PS4 version that supports (joystick).

wish xbox1 would have supported Joysticks..

From what I heard the Hotas X for the PS3 is largely compatible with the PS4 (need confirmation, though). Hopefully that will work with ED, since the X can still be bought at a cheap price online.

ED Dev Team Food for thought I am a Ps4 owner here , I don't pc game but have friends that do they keep telling me to play this game but I refuse because its not on a ps4. now I am excited to hear that its coming , now with the lack of full games for the psvr , and seeing a lot of mindless crap coming off the steam servers on the psvr. I am hoping this game is full blown and made for PSVR- it would be such a disappointment if It was not, If it supported PlayStation Vr Play Definite hands down Buy, but if not then I probably will not. Currently Playing Eve Valkyrie But There needs to be more to a game then just online battle and that is one thing eve misses.
would like to hear you thoughts !

They are looking into getting Elite ready for PSVR, according to what they said on the PS4 launch post on Facebook, but no time or date was mentioned.

I wonder if FDev will use the DS4 touchpad for anything. Maybe to move the cursor when in the System Map or something? Just spitballing here.

Y ES! My friend can finally be my wingman .(If it IS cross platform)
Greetings Commanders, we've got some very exciting news today! We're bringing Elite Dangerous: Horizons to PS4 in Q2 of 2017!

We think CEO David Braben said it best in today's Playstation EU blog:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I’m thrilled to announce today that Elite Dangerous is coming to PlayStation 4.

In Elite Dangerous, every star in our night sky – the whole Milky Way – is there for you to explore how you choose. Fight, bounty-hunt, trade, assassinate, mine, explore your way across human space and out into the immense galaxy beyond, flying with your friends or travelling alone.

Elite Dangerous has been a wonderful project to be involved with, made by a great team here at Frontier. Its roots go all the way back to my first commercial game, Elite, first released in 1984 with Ian Bell, while we were both at university. Two sequels followed. Over thirty years later, Elite Dangerous is a huge step forwards from those games, but the principles are the same – do what you like and live life in an immense galaxy – and today you can play with (or against!) friends and our amazing community as you travel the galaxy alone, together in a ‘wing’ or even fly aboard the same ship.

It is great to come to PlayStation. When Elite Dangerous arrives on PlayStation 4 next year, we’re bringing the full game with everything in our ‘Horizons’ season of expansions included, so not only can you fly your ship, but you can carry an ‘SRV’ – Surface Recon Vehicle – in your hold, and charge around the surfaces of planets and moons at up to 100mph, finding materials, attacking bases, or seeking out hidden secret things with your friends.

When you progress far enough in to the game to buy one of the larger ships you might choose to carry a ship-launched fighter to help defend yourself; you can employ crew or even allow other players to help you pilot your larger ship. Craft special weapons with the Engineers, collaborate with the community and engage in massive-scale community goals. Elite Dangerous is a game you’ll play your way.

Elite Dangerous does not follow many of the rules of other games. It lets you move as fast or as slowly as you like, without telling you what to do or how to do it. Play purely as a sandbox – exploring and looking for some of the many mysteries within the game – or follow missions and work with other players to re-shape humanity’s control over the galaxy, as you make your way to Elite status in any or all four categories in the game – Combat, Trade, Exploration and CQC.

We’ve worked hard to make Elite Dangerous the richest space simulation ever. From our love of science and astronomy, the galaxy is as real as we can make it. You’ll look up at the night sky in our own Solar system and you’ll recognise familiar constellations, then see them change as you travel away from Earth. Visit real white dwarfs, neutron stars, even black holes that exist in our real night sky. Every distance, orbit, planet, moon, ring and crater is as real as we could make it, with some 160,000 stars in the game taken from real star catalogues, with the rest of the 400 billion stars coming from stellar density maps to make the whole galaxy as accurate as possible. It’s a huge, real galaxy you can leave your mark on.

The galaxy is gradually evolving as players overthrow governments, align themselves with powers in the game, play with one of the giant like-minded player groups, or simply strive to discover something new. Two giant superpowers are on the edge of war, and there are hints of a nascent alien threat that may emerge as a quite real one any time now… We’re excited to let PlayStation 4 players jump aboard at this critical moment for our galaxy!

We’re making full use of the PS4 system and the unique features of the PS4 and PS4 Pro to deliver an experience unlike any other on the console, with features tailored to the DualShock 4 controller, whether you’re down on the surface of a planet or cruising around a stellar system, connected with your friends or meeting strangers out in the black of space.

We’re looking forward to telling you more about how we’re supporting PlayStation 4 in the coming months, before we launch in Q2 2017. We have had a great time with Elite Dangerous already. I hope you’ll come and join our fantastic community, and I’m looking forward to meeting all the PlayStation 4 players exploring our galaxy!"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We're very excited to welcome PS4 Commanders to the Elite Dangerous galaxy as we continue to develop the game for Xbox One, PC and soon for PS4!

At yet strangely enough PS4 and PC players had crossplay long before Microsoft even entertained the idea of allowing crossplay between, what are essentially, their own platforms. It's not as simple as Sony not wanting crossplay.

?! Microsoft and Sony have been doing it for exactly the same time since 2002 along with mac and PC

Ho hum, more Marketing ...ummmm...excrement. Related to the game by some tenuous link that you only figure out after you have bought the game. Once bitten, people, once bitten...

Ha that explains why ELITE DANGEROUS is so far behind in development but I suppose we should have expected it right from the start, because of the number of times the Developers change there minds on what parts of the game they are working on.

I would never consider buying or using any kind of console, but not to sound to bitter as I realise FRONTIER DEVELOPMENTS have to keep making money so I to welcome all the console players XBOX1 and PLAYSTATION users.

But I would also prefer you to keep working on the game developments we have all been expecting you to be working on.

Hmm... This might actually be a good thing.

Maybe (hopefully,) SOE takes notice that such space Sim/Arcade games exist and that there is a market for them. Then maybe (hopefully) SOE might buy the ED IP (instead of creating one of their own from scratch) or just maybe just buy FDev and make them a studio.
Then with SOE's experience with MMOs, experience with storytelling and formidable QA, ED might progress to reaching it's potential and dare I say, even fulfilling DB's dream of ED.

OpenPvE with story, better missions, scaled AI per security zone, more planets with more stuff on them to explore... :) :)

OpenPvP with massive fleet battles protecting the Empire, the Federation or the Alliance (since SOE is more than capable of having their own servers and scratching the P2P nonsense.) Piracy with lucrative deals and better declaration of intent. C&P for both PvE and PvP.

Fixing bugs, and not bringing them back in the next patch/update!!!

(Instead of spending time and effort continuously balancing weapons. Well ok, so far 2 betas to balance weapons.)

Ahh... one can dream.

Edit: Should have done some research. SOE is no more and has been sold off since 2015. :(

This is interesting - I think it gives us an insight into the 10 year plan

Year 1 - PC release and enough to keep them happy (ish)
Year 2 - XBox release and enough to keep them happy (ish)
Year 3 - PS4 release.. & TBA

This bit is speculative

Year 4 - Nintendo Wii
Year 5 - Apple ipad release (depend on whether their technology has been updated by then though)
Year 6 - Samsung and other smartphone release
Year 7 - Updates for the BBC Micro (probably MMO)
Year 8 - Updates for the Commadore 64
Year 9 - Updates for the ZX spectrum 48K and Amstrad products (excluding that scooter thing)
Tear 10 - TBA and close for winter as its finally arrived.
