The Star Citizen Thread v5

I.Quality will always be our number one goal. We set out on this journey by looking at the gaming landscape and asking: can we do better? We continue to ask that question about everything we do. As a result, we will ALWAYS extend timelines or re-do features and content if we do not feel they are up to our standards. The freedom to fight for a new level of quality in game development is what crowd funding has allowed us, and we will continue to fight to make sure Star Citizen is the best possible game it can be.

That all sounds super hunky dory but don't they have to actually make things work before they apply these ultra high standards of never seen before perfection?

I mean they're not really at the making things work stage for that excuse to kick in - are they?

ETA - to be fair perhaps when they say "up to our standards" they do in fact mean "actually works"

If you think that's all there is you are not following Star Citizen as closely as you are following other "issues" [big grin]

Nope, not at all. Been following just fine, its just too bad CIG does not release much to follow. I like how you could not come up with anything to add to the list.

I'm on the same boat although I would love some Squadron42 showcase I'm not sure has they have been pretty quiet about any hints concerning that.
I don't know if they will have 2.6 ready for the masses after the event but they will probably do another Live Stream of CIG/Streamers PVP matches in FPS and/or Arena Commander and showcase the new flight ready ships and the new FPS features.

For me, this is one of the things that stops me from getting on board with SC, the lack of gameplay features being shown. They've yet to really show off the basics of the game in a decent working order, which is what I think would be necessary before moving on to fleshing out the rest of the game.

New flyable ship's incoming and confirmed are the Drake's Herald and Caterpillar, Vanguard Hoplite and Origin 85X.
New starting UI, loading screens/music, ship loadouts were already teased, new Crusader missions (derelict Starfarer etc) and flight model changes already confirmed. https://starcitizen.tools/Star_Citizen_Alpha_2.6.0

I can see the draw for new ships for those that are already backers (the thought of new shineys to play with! ;) ) but for an undecided gamer such as myself this does nothing for me.

Like usual in game development it's not a matter of deadlines it's a matter of dealing with bugs / glitches has they come along. If things are in condition to be pushed to live they will.

[SNIP]

Sure I totally agree with you there, in that the more complex that game (and SC is VERY complex) the more bugs you're going to have to deal with.

But I do think deadlines matter for delivering new content and gameplay to potential and current backers. Crushing bugs is something you expect in a game developer, its not something to get excited for, its the revelation of interesting gameplay thats going to win people over, and this is the area where I feel CIG really needs to start delivering.

I am looking forward to seeing what they show off tomorrow, I just hope they start showing off something that would justify all the time and money that has so far been spent on this game.

Orlando, I used word 'substantial'. I think we might disagree what that word means. Interestingly though we both expect 2.6 not to land tomorrow :)

Also I don't say what CIG releases is bad...it is just not a game. It is not a gameplay. It is bits and pieces of assets.

At this point is quite clear their internal planning is close to useless to hit particular dates. Which is very common issue in IT, but CIG definitely wouldn't be allowed into more mission critical software business with such attitude. Also hitting deadlines for CIG is just another issue - not releasing anything significant new for a year is different kind of disaster. Gamers aren't that keen about release dates - as long something substantial gets released. We moan, but when we see shiny, we recognise work put into game and say thank you. But CIG has not just missed deadlines - they have missed them in massive way, and reporting this year first time confirmed fears of many that Chris is just not that good as manager.

FD missed deadline they set up for EDH 2.1 and they communicated in advance about it - 2 months in advance. We don't know when 2.3 lands now, but we still expect it to be about same 6 month ballpark as 2.1 -> 2.2 phase. Because even without telling, FD internal workflow and our experience with it allows us to believe that will be the case.

CIG can't even submit on deadline for their FPS minigame which is disconnected from PU and is just way to test FPS mechanics.

Yeah, the above is my biggest concern for the way CIG are handling things.

With all the offered and then missed dates for Alpha releases its not really building my confidence in CIG's ability to manage a project of this size and ambition.

They really need to start upping their game and showing off the content they have been building, otherwise people are just going to start doubting CIG more and more.

I think they've pretty much covered all the bases here;

Tasks that delay beyond our target dates might cause the release of 2.6.0 to be delayed, or might be excluded from 2.6.0 if appropriate to maintain the release date target.
2.6.0 work is separated into Subsections: Star Marine, Arena Commander, Technology & Systems, Content, Front End and Mega Map.

So 2.6.0 may be delayed or any of the following may be excluded;

Star Marine, Arena Commander, Technology & Systems, Content, Front End and Mega Map.

So yeah - anyone taking bets?

Again that's how "normal" game development works , normally behind doors, some keep mistake Star Citizen for an early access game where the things released are supposed to be polished and 100% bug free lol when it's doing normal game development but releasing builds to players.

It's normal that this is not very "bystander friendly". And the main advice is just wait until the game is released/ready and they wait for reviews before buying.

Contrary to what some spread around most Star Citizen supporters don't advise undecided people into buying thousands of dollars ship's but tell them to wait for freeflights so they can test stuff for themselves or for when Star Citizen releases something more stable/polished and "newb" friendly.

Game has all the hard-core backers rallied and carrying it's development on their shoulders and that's enough to keep it going for as long as it takes the game to "officially release" so if someone is on the fence imo he should stay there until it "feels" there's something good enough for him.

Most of the following will be excluded, and remainder delayed ?
That's the only true CIG style... :D

Not 1 link but more like 11 (soon 12).

Monthly Reports detail what they have been working on each month!

Here's January: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/15187-Monthly-Studio-Report

Just googlefu your way up to November for an overall idea of CIG year's work.

So that is not a list of what they RELEASED, just things CIG have said they done. Odd how so many of those contradict each other, and remember when the monthly reports were saying that Star Marine was releasing soon, ya that was years ago.

So do you have a list of what they released? Like he asked.

Edit: lol from your link

One year ago.
The Levski landing zone in Nyx is in Final Art Stage, and we are now putting the finishing touches on the Shops we’ll have there, including Cordry’s (armor), Conscientious Objects (personal weapons), Café Musain (bar), and the Medical Unit. Initial VFX and Lighting passes are under way for those environments and they are looking absolutely beautimous in their own grimy, decrepit kinda way.

Even the origin of the much used "internal dates" was from the fans. Originally the dates given by CIG were always real release dates, but CIG missed them so often the fans gave the excuse that they were just internal dates (like that is any better). CIG ran with it and took it to the next step and said they were internal goals, in an attempt to make it even less an issue (ignoring the fact that it is just as bad).

I can't believe they're still running with the "internal dates" .

Yeah, well they're not real dates - you know based on the Gregorian Calendar or anything - they're just like words and numbers man. Don't take it so literally - just chill out..

When do you think CIG will release Nyx, lol coming soon (over a year ago)

And what did you expect from professional liars ?

AI

Since AI didn’t provide a large update for December due to the holiday, we’ll focus on the general progress we made since last month.

On the character side we completed the first pass on the implementation of the functionalities required to allow enemies to use covers during their combat behaviors. Animators have provided us animations for staying in cover, shooting from cover, peeking from cover, and firing blindly at their target. The behaviors can now correctly request functionalities such as peeking or shooting from cover. The system will take care of analysing the current position in relation of the target position selecting the proper posture to use.

We also started to refactor the character perception. We’re basically creating a perception system that can be modularized directly in the game code. Components will register the different entities into the system that will allow them to perceive through different senses. Vision has been the first to be tackled, we started using the CryEngine VisionMap and we created a game component that registers an entity as an Observer or Observable. This allow us to specify what we’re interested in seeing, and how other characters can perceive us so the vision map can take care of making physical checks and caching information for queries. We will share more details about this in the upcoming weeks!

On the behavior side we have exposed a lot of functionalities through new behavior nodes and extended the current behavior we’re using. We also started using the TokenSystem we previously talked about to create the foundation for the first coordination. With the TokenSystem we’re experimenting with coordinating agents during the investigation of dangerous sounds, having one person going to investigate while the other covers him and wait for his information, etc.

Regarding the spaceships AI, we have moved all the spawning logic from LUA to C++. This will allow us to maintain the system better and it already helped us by properly supporting the asynchronous entity spawning.

In addition to all of that we have been working on a lot of stability improvements and we have worked on the creation of a development plan for 2016 and beyond!

And yet after a year, none of this is in the game, nor demonstrated in one of their tech demo's.

Again this is just from the January "monthly report", just think how much more contradictions to reality are contained in the others, it really is amazing to see how little CIG have managed to get done in a year. It also makes you wonder how much of the "monthly report" are just CIG making things up.

Or ripp off from the Enders Game so called Astro Arena?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7Jn_eGOXGA

Thats already been forgotten???

Not just forgotten but deleted as it will not be included with SM. Whenever SM releases. CIG have gone backwards in the last year, SM actually had more gameplay features and mechanics 1.6 years ago then it does now.

From your video, it says 16v16 action. So it has even lost that.

One of the main reasons why I support SC back then is that chance to participate in "open"development and to have an access to the ALL pre-alpha and alpha builds.....CIG didn´t promise me "normal" game development, closed doors and secrecy for all of us that are classified later as lower "citizen-class"....So pls. stop with this silly explanations how NORMAL game developments works as we all know it SC&CIG does not belong by any standards in that group in fact SC is still far away from anything we can call a game, and CIG is still far away to become responsible&respected company....
