I know very little of the guy and may be off base, but likely you aren't giving him the credit he's earned. Just from your example, I can come up with 2 interviews:

"I just did game AI in AAA Game Title XIV and I can probably copy-paste that knowledge into your game. I've been programming for 7 years so everyone calls me a rockstar You'll need to cater to my "latest code fad" demands which will pay out 1/50 times.". Ok, sounds good, hopefully there is enough similarities between GTXIV and what we are doing that it would fit. And we always wanted to learn Google Go and do DB transactions in JavaScript.

Compared to:

"I've proven time and again that I can solve whatever problem comes my way, regardless of the underlying tech. Everyone knows that I'm tenacious and eat software bugs for breakfast. I don't know how to solve your AI problem yet but my track record says I'll figure it out quickly". Yup. Hired.

Tech moves fast, but wiley programmers always move faster. Don't count out the old guys. *ahem*. Maybe my bias is showing though.

Thing is that he literally hasn't got a game to his credit since 1996... that's 20 years.
I don't know what other experience he has or what his role is in the project, I know he's not on the payroll as a programmer but as a director.
Assuming he's been directing other non-game projects for those 20 years still makes it incredibly ambiguous why he'd be suitable for this position, beyond being someone Chris had experience working with in the past.

A wiley programmer would stay on top of modern systems to an extent, but there's a bit of a gap to cover if for instance your field of expertise (AI) has gone through some pretty big shifts that are exclusively relevant to game systems.

As a side note... your first hypothetical interview is about as far removed from the kind of guy a modern AAA studio would hire as possible. :p The big triple-A companies out there demand you adhere to their strict coding standards and utilise whatever features the language (almost exclusively C++) offers to maximise code reliability and maintainability.

The hotshot, stubborn "I do things my way" programmers better start seeing the value of smart-pointers for collaborative projects if they want to have a shot at a position in such a team. :D

That's third person. Don't have a one from a buddy yet

*sigh*

I know that people get annoyed when I ask them to read what they respond to before actually responding, but there's a reason for doing so. You wasted a fair amount of time on not really demonstrating anything of value there. Oh well, it'll be interesting to see if they finally wasted time on that pointless and potentially game-breaking detail if/when you get that buddy footage… :D

Sure. I'd start with the more obvious things though. Like fixing the bazillion physics glitches, the animations, the FM. Then, i'd start to build the game world, like one system complete, then another few. Spending ridiculous effort on some detail that it hard to notice if there is no movement and impossible to notice when stuff happens, I don't know. Of course, if there is no gameplay then you have to do something, so you might just as well starre on your mates HUD trying to guess his health or ammo. I'd prefer something else to do.

It looks alright although if they're going for facial tics then I wish there was a small amount of facial tension for single shots and teeth baring for sustained fire. It looks a bit weird otherwise.

To me that looks slightly more pointless than the bouncy radar - though a lot more ignore-able to be fair.

Are you sure you didn't shopped the Star Citizen logo above the NoMan'Sky or Elite viewers? [rolleyes]

Why?

From what I've seen Star Citizen goes normaly with ~200+ viewers around the day, allways ahead of the other "fly your ship" space-games like Elite, Kerbal or NoManSky.

It was at 3pm GMT. ED had ~180 viewers, NMS ~40, EVE 1k+; dunno about KSP. Maybe the majority of SC fans only watch the SC streamers (WTFOSaurus, Twerk17, Mitauchi, etc) from the streamteams of BadNewsGaming, TEST and Redacted?

9pm GMT, with Redacted's popular Podcast currently live (WTFOSaurus started his stream at 6pm GMT):

Mitauchi has been streaming since 4pm GMT.

Unlike a lot of people I didn't really have an issue with the basic flight model as far as dog fighting goes. It works. I have not tried it in 2.6 yet, though.

I did try a bit of Star Marine, and that was fun, but again.... bugs. I'm truly sick of the framerate being poor, although at least it was better in SM than it is in the PU part of the game where there's a lot more status packets flying around between all the clients.

My first SM game ended in a disconnection error. :/

I get that this is an alpha and all, and it's not the bugs I mind per-se...it's the OLD bugs that have been around since the beginning that are still here. It's the fact that CR ditched the SQ42 demo because it wasn't up to his exacting standards for quality, and yet I still cannot enter and exit my spaceship (in a game about spacehips) without it breaking the game. It's the constant framerate issues due to networking. It's the hard crashing of the client half the time you exit the game. It's me clipping through the walls of my ship.

These are not some minor bugs that the engineering team doesn't have time to fix yet. This is basic stuff. After literally years I expect more improvement.

Thanks for the response. I'll have to try it out for myself anyway, and I doubt 2.6.0 will go public this side of the year.

Well, I tried to logon tonight and launcher refused to allow me. So I went to "My RSI" and guess what - that too refused. I tried authentication, failed, code unaccepted, tried 3 times but same each. Tried account rescue, same thing but different values so after 4 years of 2 stps frwrd 1 stp bck and 1stp frwrd 2 stps bck I've uninstalled the whole caboodle, bllcks to Cloud Imperium I've come to the end of the road with all things SC and I'm not interested if the game is good, bad or brilliant when it comes out, I've lost the appetite to stay with this anymore, so take my money CI, stick it and good riddance.

I would have said this on their forum, but I can't get on to it, so sorry guys and girls, had to vent spleen somewhere :)
