The Star Citizen Thread v5

Aye...that´s my biggest concern for years now, heck I´ll be happy even if they manage 50-70 players per instance just if that can work smooth&stable.....atm from this perspective that kind looks like a dream.....

To get even close to those numbers and 60 fps they need to "dumb down" game very hard - remove their fancy ship damage states, cut hard on graphics, make physics simple as possible and make AI as dumb as possible...

I am quite sure, that at some point they will do it.

Except that the crucial piece of R&D, the netcode, is still missing. StarCitizen cannot work nearly as promised with less than 50 player per instance at least. And being a game that requires aiming to no small degree, it also needs at least 30fps. Being a competitive game with harsh punishment for death, all glitches need to be sorted out. There is lots of work to do on the R&D side.

Very true, as I don't really care too much about Star Marine and PvP, I was focussing more on the general PvE content - but you are right, netcode is just as important for co-op play as well. It will be intersting to see how that evolves over the next 12 months too.

If coop is important for you, you can add the whole subsumption stuff (NPC AI, crowd AI) to the list - so far still in promise land.

Coop is not vital for me, but it'd be nice. My preferred play style is pretty much solo, but it is nice to join up with friends to do stuff as well from time to time - this is how I tend to play ED, and that's how I like it.
In terms of SC for 3.0, being able to play solo (without lots of game crashes) and explore Stanton to the full extent promised would be enough for me as a first step, but just that, a first step of many.

Considering how 2.6 was implemented, cut in half, bugging out existing features and overall NOT what it promised to be I think they will push "something" out in 2017 thats labeled 3.0 but isnt anything similar to what the roadmap promises. To be honest I m really surprised they managed to get the Caterpillar out even tho it looked like they had to put a considerable focus on that single ship in order to make it available. It was necessary tho to keep the fans on base. As long as "something" is given to the backers the project can continue even tho it doesnt progress compared to the timeframe.

the updates were meant (at least I thought they were) to introduce new features to test and complement the game instead whats released are half-finished and thought-out "things" that I cannot see to fullfill what was promised. Take Star Marine for example. Yes its out and it even runs (as a stand-alone-mode) but its so barebone and obviously unfinished that I doubt it ll ever become any better. Not with the concurrent pressure to finetune ships, work on basic game mechanics, PG tech (is this still a thing?), design NEW ships for sales (priority) and overally trying to catch up with the technical debt. I wonder if some backers, jokingly mentioning "take your time, even if it takes another 10 years to release" are even aware how close to the mark they are?

I remember when Arena Commander first release was delayed because it wasn't on par with the quality CIG aimed at, and then few days/weeks later it was released, barebones and buggy as hell... History keeps repeating itself since. Grinding both my patience and my confidence towards this project.

Speaking of nausea inducing, I found a most amusing diversion - pressing 'x' to go prone, then double tapping 'a' or 'd' will cause the character - and the camera to roll in what can only be called vomit inducing foolishness. I can't imagine what purpose this would have other than completely disorientate the player - and imagining the effect in VR did cause me to burst out laughing. My amusement was furthered when I found the external camera - 'f4', and found that when performing the roll maneuver in third person the camera rolls with you. Truly amazing.

The events of the day have wearied me greatly. I feel that I am not prepared for the dangers of the pvp universe zone as my supply of Mountain Dew is running low. Better to rest, resupply, then tomorrow continue my mission fresh and attempt to make contact with the locals.

Crikey. Emergent gameplay as in "causing your breakfast to emerge from your stomach when playing".

It seems that CR's daft camera and single model choices are causing plenty of unwanted issues. Who would have thunk it?

Just a reminder...for the past 2 years we heared about SQ42 coming "this" year. We are now at the third "this" year. Without any real progress from 2016 beside it being heavly monetized at the CitzenCon and not being shown. TO THIS DAY....

But hey this is me being positive so lets kick the can down the road again.

There might be good reason for Squadron 42 never come out.

You know, it might be very average, buggy, bland and boring. Or more believable, there is too much tech debt, there's too many wrong choices made to make game work in best form.

As long backers aren't confronted with this possibility, they will keep pouring money in Chris pocket.

Why would he ever rush to release it?

Ah yes... it's shocking but something you see daily if you get some real expertise in an uncommon topic so much so it has a name - Dunning-Kruger effect. I've become a specialist in a couple of fields over my working life and in each of them I've ended up being told I know nothing by people who can't explain the fundamentals of what I do to another person.

It's a lot easier to see simple solutions when you don't know why they ever got complicated in the first place.

Breathtaking Irony.

The cult of support, the cult of critique - which are you?

Neither - not everyone has to fit into your neat boxes and I don't believe it's healthy for any individual or the game for people to fix themselves in such categories. Plus I'm not sure you know what irony is.

Which are you? Have you put yourself into a neat little box or is that just reserved for people in the 'other'?

Hey, guys, new batch of rumours from TheAgent:

No, I'm not kidding, but he is. Here are others from the same post, you can judge their veracity by yourself:

May have been better to leave the original post as it was, instead of moving things around. Just saying.
