So I would love an honest assessment of sq 42...cause being so close to not wanting to waste time on another demo was one of those narrative shifts that frustrate me to no end as a backer.

If you take into consideration any of the leaks that theAgent and 8Ace on SA mentioned in the lead up to CitCon (which turned out in TheAgent's case to be even MORE of a disaster than he was expecting it to be) when it came to thing regarding SQ42, then it becomes pretty clear that the reason it was seemingly pulled at the "last minute" was due to whatever slice of "gameplay" they had to offer was *so* borked, buggy, crash prone and utterly unstable that if they *did* show it, then there would be no doubt in anyone's mind that CIG were YEARS away from having anything remotely playable of SQ42.

I did write - long before TheAgent's leaks - that SQ42 was a no-show. Most didn't believe me; and the "fans" just attacked me anyway.

Hey guys little news
This Week in Star Citizen
January 9th, 2017
GREETINGS CITIZENS
First off, HAPPY NEW YEAR!
We returned to offices last week to resume the process of bringing Star Citizen and Squadron 42 to life, with stories of holiday cheer and more than a few personal adventures. With every New Year comes the inevitable resolutions, and this year the Community Team aims to continue improving the content we release to you each and every week.
What this means right off the bat is an evolution of the “Community Manager’s Log and Schedule” that went up at the beginning of the week into a front-page post, “This Week in Star Citizen.” As always, it’ll be a chance to give you some of the highlights to look out for in the week ahead, but we’ll also use it to highlight specific content you may have missed out on in the past, as well as bring a much deserved spotlight to the work our Citizens do to enhance the overall Star Citizen experience.
In addition to the change in our Monday posts, we’ll be pushing the continuing evolution in our video content as we move through 2017, including popular hits like Around the Verse, Bugsmashers and Loremaker’s Guide to the Galaxy, as well as debuting some new additions to those stalwarts. We’ll discuss one of those additions farther down below, but be certain you come back here in the coming weeks to find out more.
Each Tuesday, the Lore Team releases another installment in one of their many continuing series. These lore posts have been a tradition since Star Citizen was first announced, and if you haven’t checked out some of the older series, like Cassandra’s Tears, you can find all the previous entries here.
On Wednesdays, we alternate between the death and destruction of bugs everywhere with episodes of our edutainment series, Bugsmashers! and The Loremaker’s Guide to the Galaxy, where members of the CIG Lore Team explore the design, story and science of one of Star Citizen’s planetary systems. For this week, it’s Associate Writer Adam Wieser with a story of exploration and expansion with the Ark Starmap as his guide.
If you haven’t seen the Ark Starmap in action, you can check it out for yourself here.
Around the Verse, our flagship weekly program comes to us every Thursday, and this week we return from haitus with more behind-the-scenes goodness. If you’re looking for all the latest development news on Star Citizen, you don’t want to miss out on Around the Verse, every week on our YouTube channel.
That brings us to Friday. The end of the traditional work week, and if you’re anything like me, you like to kick back and relax a bit playing some video games, and that’s just what we’re gonna do, only we’re gonna Star Citizen with YOU. Join Community Managers Jared Huckaby and Tyler Witkin on Happy Hour Friday as they play Star Citizen with the fans LIVE on Twitch with a special guest streamer from the community, and get your chance to win a free Star Citizen game package and ship! But you have to be watching to claim your prize. Tune in at 10am PST, 6pm UTC at twitch.tv/starcitizen and don’t miss out!
With that, I hope we’ll see you on Friday!

Some quality self-ownage that only Star Citizen's are capable of displaying has been scoped out by Jobbo_Fett on the SA forums....

A comment that was made *4 years* ago!

<Edit> And then you have a far more recent comment, found on reddit by the ever-humorous "A Neurotic Corncob" at SA, in which the commenter's efforts to try and eradicate the mere possibility that SQ42 might not arrive this year from his mind... by just saying that it WILL come out this year!

Couple of interesting threads on reddit today.

https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitize...is_roberts_in_der_spiegel_sq42_will_probably/

"Probably" - of course, hedging his bets there.

Some negativity in there from the fans.... understandable at this point.

And this one: https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/comments/5n0icj/star_citizen_cheaters_face_permaban_with_no/

Will be interesting to see how that pans out.

What happened to Client/Server makes games harder to cheat that we heard so much about on the ED forums? And how SC was going to be pure C/S.... my oh my.

Oh, and someone, please help me out. Citizens keep talking about subsumption, but i've got no idea what the hell they are talking about. Is this another fidelity like word that is just being thrown about to make the game sound good?

I did a google, got this from wikipedia:

Subsumption may refer to:

A minor premise in symbolic logic (see syllogism)
The Liskov substitution principle in object-oriented programming
Subsumption architecture in robotics
A subsumption relation in category theory, semantic networks and linguistics, also known as a "hyponym-hypernym relationship" (Is-a)
Formal and real capitalist subsumption describes different processes whereby capital comes to dominate an economic process. Coined in Karl Marx's Capital, Volume I

The only thing that might fit is the last one about Marx.... something to with trading?

Oh, and someone, please help me out. Citizens keep talking about subsumption, but i've got no idea what the hell they are talking about. Is this another fidelity like word that is just being thrown about to make the game sound good?

Apparently subsumption is "Star Citizen’s objective-oriented NPC AI system" https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/comments/4p3odw/subsumption_ai/

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/15364-Monthly-Studio-Report (CTRL+f Subsumption)

I think they just like using words to make their stuff sound more special, everything has to have its own name etc

Ah, thanks. So just a fancy way of saying they are working on the AI. Why can't they just say that?

The one you should be looking at is the robotics meaning of the term, where a robot is allowed to select a number of context-dependent “actions” to try to solve a specific problem, and string together a number of such actions to reach a larger goal. It's basically Radiant AI from The Elder Scrolls.

Ah, thanks. So just a fancy way of saying they are working on the AI. Why can't they just say that?

Because that wouldn't make it sound special or unique. Same as why they don't just call it Radiant, since we all know what silliness that AI gets up to even after Bethesda having worked on it for close to 15 years. :D

Naturally, CIG's version will be much better since they have no experience and a fraction of the time spent.

Has the famous actor and developer Ben Lesnick been frozen out of CIG Towers then? Haven't seen his magnificent presence in an awful long time.

Currently there's a cap on buying UEC in the cash shop, 25,000 a day and a hard cap of 125,000 I believe. Apparently it's in place to avoid P2W.
What happens if someone buys an expensive ship, like the Polaris, and sells it in-game post launch. They've already said that the value will be increasing significantly compared to what's being paid now, with one developer saying it would cost 25 million or more (at the moment it costs 750K UEC in comparison).

Instead of getting 1000 UEC for each dollar you would be getting 33,333 UEC for each dollar...

Ah, thanks. So just a fancy way of saying they are working on the AI. Why can't they just say that?

Because then their meaning would be crystal clear and dont distract people from whats really going on. Throw in a word which hasnt any links to your true meaning (pssst....scam) and people will be busy making up their own meaning and fight among each other taking the focus away from the true problem. Its the same when talking to a scientist. You talk to this person under the assumption that he knows what hes talking about and same as doctors they will use a LOT of jargon and foreign words in order to underline his superiority in the topic (or just trying to be as exact as possible, your choice). The problem is.....in such a discussion.....would you even NOTICE that your discussion partner is mocking you and just talks unrelated stuff even if you dont understand 80% of what hes saying? Many people simply nod their head and try to look as if they are on the same page but in reality have no clue whats going on. If asked by others afterwards what you both were talking about you either try to recap in your own words which usually doesnt sound as impressive or just come up with an interpretation of your own. I m really a bit surprised that this tactic works so well. I mean is humanity really THAT gullible even when earning 5digit salaries? I remember the very first time when in one of my medical examinations I flat out told my doctor "sorry, that all meant absolutely zero to me, can you repeat that in german by chance?" I felt stupid and I felt ashamaned but really...for what....for asking? Seeing people getting parted with their money for nothing then hot air is an all-too-common occurance but watching it going on for so long and people STILL being happy about it, thats something you only see in cults. This was supposed to be a video game right?

I sometimes wonder if human stubborness isnt a thing in this. Mr.Smart appeared pretty early as the nay-sayer and promptly was declared "satan" by Chris Roberts himself giving the community a target. That Mr.Smart reliably brings out blogs and reports and forecasts while simultanously taunting the culti.....white knights probably only hardens their resolve which plays perfectly into Chris Roberts wallet (literally). Its that "I cannot let you win even if I die" mentality which prevents many SC-Fans to see the problems behind the nano-thick content-curtain of the "game". So Star Citizen HAS TO release and it HAS TO be the BDSSGE....and didnt think past that point obviously. A rational mind would ask the hard question itself "what if the project fails?" and do some research or try to be more objective when coming to a conclusion but of course theres a factor(s) here which works against such a development. Mainly money and of course the childish behaviour that whoever is not of my opinion is my enemy.

I would expect the marketing department of a company to be either educated in such things or at least keep an interested eye on how the community behaves and developes because its in their own best interest when it comes to wide-community interest and advertising. Watching SCs marketing profile over the last couple of years I can only surmise that their head poncho is completely clueless on what to do or (which is worse IMO) that all this is an elaborate plan and works as intended. Now at this point I am personally not beyond calling it all malicious intent but of course I could be as extreme as TenakaFuery is with his statement 2 pages back.

Of course if I am wrong I stand to lose zero except for an apology but if he is wrong he's going to lose a crapton of money plus the bonus of a self-reflection.

Even if feeling generous and calculating with 2012 as the starting year of development that puts us into year 5 and "most" stuff still is guesswork and even the most fundamental things are not hammered down.....just take a look at the community and make a list (Stigbob?) about how many variations of interpretations there are rotating among the playerbase for the most basic things.

I was a major backer well into the 5 digits (as in, well on the way to 6). I left in early 2015, largely disillusioned by censorship on RSI forums. I realized CIG not only didn't care about what we had to say, but they didn't care one bit about us, backers, in general. I'm now quite happy having nothing invested in this project any longer.

Is it my own understanding failing me or is that guy stating hes is at 70k PLUS invested? Or is this maybe american exaggeration (sorry folks but you DO have a thing for it :D) translating into 12K with the intent to continue? Also as usual poster of that statement is being teased and taunted and eventually harassed when not stopping to post.....SC community at its best :)

SPIEGEL online

Picture labled "Star Citizen city Area 18"

Inside Stars

Developer Chris Roberts promises the most spectacular space simulation ever: "Star Citizen". Hundred thousands of fans gave him the money for it in advance - the question is if its ever going to finish.

For years Jérôme Cantu waits on day zero when a new universe will emerge on his computer. The young berlin resident is geared for it. Together with 2 friends he already has purchased more then 140 space ships.

I usually dont read the Spiegel (a tad too much propaganda in there) but maybe I ll buy that issue later and will come back with a full transcript of that article ^^

Journey Entry: Day 3

What a day. I have called a forced halt having only played roughly an 2 hours, as due to the terrible frame rate and forced animations my health has deteriorated to a point where I held my lunch only by the barest of margins, and suffer from a headache. If conditions don't improve, tomorrow may be my last entry as I will be forced to abandon my quest.

Today I decided to enter Crusader proper, leaving Arc Corp for another day.
After another vomit inducing animation to get out of bed, I decided to test a Major Tom standby - changing into civilian clothes and attempting to clip through the airlock to see if I could indeed walk around outside without a spacesuit.

Leaving my pod, I saw the famous 'Big Bennies' machine, and decided to get a refreshment. In hindsight, it was a mistake. I walked into it, in an attempt to get a 'use' prompt, but to my horror, it turns out that it wasn't an innocent vending machine, but instead a portal to the fifth dimension from which matter itself had been turned inside out.
owyFv7N.jpg

Running forward, I attempted to make my way back to the real world and 'fell' into space, confirming that yes, you can still fly around outside without a spacesuit on without a care for either the effects of the vacuum, or the lack of any jetpack. I had around 20 or so seconds of flight, before the game crashed to the desktop.

Restart, and try again. I was unable to reproduce the portal unfortunately, so I continued on my trek instead. The game struggled to maintain 20 fps, dipping to 15 periodically. Later in a battle with an NPC, the framerate would dip below 10.

I summoned an Avenger, and rather than wear an unfashionable space suit, was quite easily able to clip through the airlock to get to my ship in my civilian clothes.
OFlohDq.jpg

The flight model hasn't been changed as far as I can tell, ships flight still looking like a toys being waved around by a toddler. There is still no inertia - ships move instantly, and stop instantly.
giphy.gif
giphy.gif

One thing odd was the instrumentation in the ships - the Avenger for example is quite minimalistic, including only speed and a couple of other things. The radar, damage, shields, and systems are at the bottom of the screen, partially obscured. Only half the radar is visible, and most of the other systems are not. When pitching up, the radar is completely off screen. Odd choice for a dedicated fighter.
yloMR2B.jpg

Other ships I tried also had improperly placed information, making it difficult to tell what was going on. I later battled an NPC in a Herald and had no information available to me other than the onscreen arrow pointing me towards him - the radar, info on my shields and health, all underneath my viewable screen.

Locks haven't been implemented - there seems to be nothing stopping you from stealing other peoples ships. I tried (purely for research purposes of course) to open the cargo bay of a Constellation sitting on the launch pad, and was able to do so - but using the knowledge I had learnt from watching Major Tom, and my own research the previous day, I flew up to the top of the ship, and simply warped into the cockpit and just flew off. Unfortunately the owner must have had some traps set, as walking over the airlock inside the ship caused me to ragdoll and die.

Speaking of ragdolling - do you recall Saint’s Row? I must confess the series is one of my favourite. One of the most fun activities was Insurance Fraud, in which you would throw your character in front of traffic in order to be ragdolled and thrown through the sky. Turns out, it is not as fun in first person.
giphy.gif

I summoned a Caterpillar, as I wished to test it - however, the repeated 'waking up' animations had taken their toll, and walking through the Caterpillars labyrinth of hallways and the animations from climbing ladders became too much for me and I was forced to quit lest I spray half digested Doritoes over my keyboard. A couple of rounds of Overwatch later and I forged owards - however this time no one in the server was able to summon any ships. I thus turned my attention to the Star Citizen natives.

There were not many locals, perhaps 7 or 8, and none were aggressive that I could see. I observed the odd ways in which they moved about, alien perhaps to my sensibilities but they appeared unhampered by it. It reminded me of early GMod animations such as 'Full Life Consequences'.
giphy.gif
Perhaps my own locomotion appeared odd to their eyes in turn.

To their credit - the space commandos are a friendly lot - with no ships able to be summoned, those that did have ships - a Starfarer and a Freelancer - returned to the port to pick up everyone who wished for it. I observed the group resolve to complete a co-op mission. The chat was also friendly - banter between some, and helpful information for newcomers. The kill or be killed days that I vaguely recall have gone - perhaps only the survivors of those violent times remain, the lessons of the past creating a more peaceful society. Or perhaps there's simply not as many people playing anymore. Either way, it's a surprisingly toxic-free environment.
5Glk35Y.jpg
Me with some friendly locals

Although I had pushed through the nausea to get as much research as I could, at this point I had to end my days trek, and record my findings. Tomorrow, should all go well, I will attempt a visit to Arc Corp and perhaps a mission in Crusader.

@Rilzi

if you ever published a book or are going to....send me a PM with the title, I would read it :)

Most of the things you report could be waved away under the explanation "alpha" but then factors like 5th year and 141million dollars come into play and suddenly people might not be as ready to look past the flaws. Thats really the main statement of this thread. Wondering why after all this time there is hardly any progress made? What happened in the meantime?

As many has stated and which in itself is a logical conclusion....building up a company simply does NOT interrupt development. Maybe development speed starts out slow and ramps up in tandem with the company expanding but Star Citizen has started at a glacial speed and didnt really improve it over the years. If what the game holds now would ve been available right after kickstarter in 2012 (according to the kickstarter trailer there was about the same amount of content /snicker) people would have boosted the overall cash reserve to 500million PLUS for sure. But time has habit to degrade things and stuff that looked awesome and promising 2 years ealier is boring and old news now so just like Chris Roberts stated himself (and which is one of the rare things when stuff he talked about turned true) "We’re already one year in - another two years puts us at 3 total which is ideal. Any more and things would begin to get stale." - 2012. And just as predicted it seems a lot of focus and effort goes into polishing visual effects to be on par (and failing) with current titles.

Yes, other titles in the past have been in development longer and cost more but the main difference is. These titles were not in alpha/pre-alpha for 5 years then SUDDENLY switched to release or beta. Other titles alpha is probably the time where most changes happen in a game until the overall goal frame is fixed down and work goes toward details and finetuning. Other titles offer a steady PROGRESS visible and without the promise of "open development" remain pretty much open. If anything Star Citizen while promising "open development never seen before" (wait....thats exactly whats happening isnt it? Open development like this has never really been seen before lol) managed to leave its community even MORE CONFUSED and CLUELESS about whats happening. After FIVE YEARS I would expect a hard documentation fixing down future features and mechanics how else would the developers know what they are working towards to? Personally I ve seen more switches in focus (we are focusing on SQ42, all hands are on PG, work stopped for the whole company to work on a demo which wont be used in the game etc etc) which really are NOT reassuring.

At the moment I remember titles in the past where companies have released content videos as signs of progress over time hyping up the community only to release their game which has no similarity with the polish nor the content shown in those videos. AT BEST Star Citizen will be one of those titles but I fear it ll be far worse.....

@Rilzi

if you ever published a book or are going to....send me a PM with the title, I would read it :)

cheers :)
I wanted my reports to be honest appraisals of the game as it stands right now. Perhaps with a little humour, but truthfully telling of the good and the bad - a neutral reporting of the state of the game. I guess a positive is that I was able to entertain myself for roughly 2 hours without really leaving the station?
To be honest, the only real difference I've seen from 2.1 is the persistence and customisability of the hangar. That's pretty much it. The frame rate is still subpar, it's glitchy and buggy, and the basic game loop - the flight model, is still bad. But what has honestly amazed me is the terrible, terrible forced animations. I wasn't joking when I said I had to stop playing today because it was making me feel sick, I feel like there's a lot of things I missed - I didn't even get to any of the missions! But I honestly couldn't bring myself to play anymore. I will try again tomorrow, but this may be a situation where the journal entries - and sanity levels - go rapidly downhill...
