ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Think you'll be better off posting that in a trackir thread, rather than Oculus which, but its very nature, has 1:1 head movement! :p

If the DK2 can do distance from the monitor/camera, then having the extra DOF would mean than any issues with reading small text on a relatively low res screen would be gone - you could simply lean in a bit and get "closer" to the readouts.

It would effectively be a panacea for Frontier without them having to "optimise" the HUD/cockpit for the OR (not that they have said they would do such a thing, but...)

Unfortunately you can't move your head much in ED. At least not with regular head tracking. Maybe 5 inches in each axis.

War Thunder has an optional zoom on Z which is useful in a WW2 fighter lol. Kind of funny that you get a telephoto zoom for that era game but not in the 3000's in which elite is set.

Had a quick 45 minutes last night and on the cruise back to the station from the combat zone I was heading straight for the star so there was a lot of brightness in the OR. I rotated the ship to block the light with the canopy 'A' pillar and as I got nearer the angle changed and it flared in much the same way as it would in a car. I instinctively closed one eye and it took a few seconds before I realised that there was no flare in the other eye. It was actually quite amazing as I didn't expect that level of attention to detail, tried it a few times to make sure it wasn't a fluke. Great stuff FD!

I also have one on order, and I'm really looking forward to trying it out with the Premium Beta. :)

I expect that Frontier also have some on order so they can play and test with it.

(If not, give me a prod: I'm based just around the corner and could be persuaded to lend it to you — at least for brief periods!)

I think it's pretty likely that FD already have a DK2 - Oculus sent some out to key developers.

I just crashed my eagle into the new station with 1000credits in the bank.......

Anyway, I am so beside myself to get a clear look at this game in VR via DK2!
DK1 is good enough that I'm only playing in rift mode but man I am tired if not being able to read the menu text without moving my head around and squinting and shooting at a ship 2000m away that looks like something from the Abyss that I can't quite make out.

Re: the head movement, I think this game has it right. Remember that we're strapped into a flight seat (well I don't see straps but..) and craning over to see down the side of the ship would require an unsafe amount of play in the harness. You'd be smashed about in a dogfight too much. So I think it's realistically limited. That said I get lots of good views in a dogfight with O.R. Giving me an edge.. Sadly it didn't help me avoid gawking into the radial arm of the station... Ah sidewinder...

I backed the Oculus Rift Kickstarter campaign on day 1 and I preordered the DK2 within the first hour of availability. I only play ED with my DK1 (well, at least I did it until beta 2 broke support) and I can't wait to get the DK2 next month. ED really shines inside the Oculus Rift!

So in the real world you are using virtual reality technology to play a simulation of a future high tech space craft. In this future you are limited to looking out of the windows you can see while strapped to a chair. I wonder what technology they could use to overcome the limitation of windows?

They already have it on the F35. It has cameras all over the body which are stitched together to give a seamless view in the pilots helmet so they can effectively see thru the fuselage.

I'd still like a spacecraft with a bubble canopy. The PNP is cool, but nothing beats a true bubble canopy like those in the F16 and F22.

I`ll be recieving my dk2 in august hopefully, funny i`d forgot about this kinda tech in old variants i never thought our gfx cards could handle it let alone anything else lost faith in its arival along time ago but after seeing the guys showing off their teck at oculus and other youtube vids i was sold, hell if dk1 was the only possibility tech wise i think i would have gone for it. This game and this game alone has convinced me to go dk2 but i think i`ll be visiting many a title for another bout in dk2 mode, excitment aint the word i`m trying to forget i`ve ordered it at all which is not working too well Damn i mean DAMN Elite dangerous & Dk2 things are looking good, with the little niggling worry how addictive will this VR be?

It feels like someone only has to fart on the glass of my Sidewinder and it starts cracking.... Dont fancy my chances in a bubble canopy

Getting my 780 Ti ACX tomorrow (conveniently timed to arrive on my birthday), and I hope to get the DK2 in July, ordered it mid march.

Expect an update from Oculus of some sort regards DK2 July deliveries either next Tuesday or before. They made a slip up saying that they'd send out a mass email and then retracted it saying they might do a Reddit thread instead.
