ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

I know I saw somewhere that this game is supposed to work with the Rift. I've got access to the DK1 and DK2 headsets. I was just wondering if the game works with either of them currently? Any special hoops you have to jump through to get it working?

Thanks

It works with both right now (I have a DK1), although I think the positional tracking for the DK2 will only be in the next build (next Tuesday). I can't confirm that however as I won't get my DK2 until August sadly...

The only hoop you have to go though is select one of the "Oculus Rift" options in the graphics menu. There are two options as one is for when you're using headphones with the rift and the other is for fixed speaker placement.

Very cool - i just posted a criticism about the pricing for beta access in the general forum, but if this works with DK2, i might have to eat my own words and buy the beta anyhow. I'd love to see what this game looks like on a DK2.

Welcome on board Merk. David Braben had been going on about the high number of Oculus Rift owners currently testing the game.

If you're like me then you've got to wait until August for your headset. You can play Elite in SBS 3D in the meantime.

I have access to a DK2 headset, so if I'm willing to shell out the $75 for the beta, i could test with it now. Just debating if i want to spend that much on the game or not.

OK, i am debating if I should spend $400 on a DK2 because the game is worth it.

Actually it's more about spending money on supporting the development of an evergrowing game, beta testing the game, giving your input, practising it before final release, and having access to future expansions when the game is released. You're not just paying for a game.

Has anyone played E:D with Oculus Dev Kit 2?

Hey there,

I've been googling my butt off trying to find an account of someones dev kit 2 experience in Elite: Dangerous, but I'm coming up empty.

I specifically am curious to hear if reading text on menus is now possible (without squinting and tilting your head) and how much better the focus is when looking out of the cockpit.

I play with the Oculus Rift and man, it is beyond amazing. Something else I don't see on the internet is how Elite: Dangerous is hands down the best Oculus Rift experience there is. I'm of the understanding that the game was designed to play in O.R. from the beginning and man, it comes across.

2 Oculus favorites:

When ship docking, i fly up to the docking pad inverted until I can look straight up into the pad, then I roll over and descend to dock. Totally cool.

Flying around the crippled capital ship in the distress signal area and watching it burn.

Ok, well thanks in advance for any answer to this you might have to this. A link to an Oculus Dev Kit 2 review that specifically references Elite: Dangerous would be great, but best would be a first hand account by one of you.

Love you,
xoxo

FD have had a rep come for a day to give them access to a DK2 it was tweeted whatever that is.
Some 100 DK2 have been given to key dev teams but one would presume they are under an NDA.

I have a HD upgraded DK1. Side menus are perfectly readable with the higher resolution. FSD distance indicators less so.

Well fortunately the FSD locked target has a range display both to the left of the console and in the target panel, so the outside numbers are redundant.

Thanks for the reply! I have the dev kit 2 pre-ordered from day 1, so it should be here pretty soon (When?? When???) and I'll see for myself.

Feedback from people at E3 who used it confirm the menu reading is infinitely better...

I have one on order anyway so as soon as it arrives I will LET YOU KNOW,

I ordered mine on Mar 16th, which I think was the first day of presales. I'll post back here if I get mine too, to give you the heads up.

So awesome that DK2 is coming right after PB2! Yeah! Hohoo!

You should bring it along to Lavecon so that everyone can see if it's worth getting (and you can see whether the game is worth playing on it!) :D

EDIT: You're talking in US Dollars - so I'm guessing the cost of going to Lavecon is not cheap. DOH

by the time the rift is out, there is a good chance standard beta will be out too.

surely £50 is not too much to pay? (OK more than most pc games but its standard console game RRP)

if it is however, then you will have plenty of other stuff to check out on the rift, freebie demos and such, and with a bit of luck the game will go Gamma in september (£35)

Lateral head movement increase?

I'd like to know if ED will support a greater range of lateral head movement with ED than is currently available with 6dof trackIR. There is currently a tiny amount of lateral movement possible with ED compared to, say, FSX or Prepar3D (although by default in those you can move your head through the walls of the cockpit which isn't great either!).

A greater range of lateral movement would allow closer focussing on menu and HUD elements and also the ability to peer over the canopy edge to get a better field of view below the ship.

Think you'll be better off posting that in a trackir thread, rather than Oculus which, but its very nature, has 1:1 head movement! :p

The Rift has 1:1 for rotation, but is it confirmed that it has 1:1 translational mapping for head movements? How does that get calibrated for different distances between the user and the camera?

The camera should be able to detect the distance between the camera and the user.
