Alien archeology and other mysteries: Thread 9 - The Canonn

That's pretty easy to explain...Frontier thought someone was going to figure out the meaning behind the ruins. Months past and no one did, so they started up an in-game way of dropping hints to move the progress along. If we can't find the sites, they'll drop more hints. If we find the sites and still can't figure it out, they'll drop more hints. Make sense?

There's a difference between "nudging something along" and the.... well... whatever you think this Ram Tah pinata hunt symbolizes. Imagine you're in math class and don't get the answer... a good teacher or even classmate would nudge you along by suggesting to look at the equation differently or that you might need to take a closer look at the fraction; whereas if the nudging would be like Frontier's approach, the teacher would tell you to look somewhere in the books on four different shelves in the library. ;)

Just got the news, congratulations to CMDR Zorbaq!!!!! Time to crack open some celebratory sparkling beverages! I can't wait till I'm free, I'll haul my Anaconda out there for an evening's science-ing :D

As for the fact that these ruins are identical, I can't say I'm overly surprised. It's the same with the alien wrecks, after all. What does disappoint me is that the data is the same.

I find it interesting that both ruins were found on worlds which have moons, and also orbit brown dwarves. I'd always wondered if the two large circles represented the relationship between a planet and its moon. Maybe the Guardians consider moons sacred?

Thats the spirit ;)

I'm hoping that my less than thrilled demeanor isn't being mistaken for anger. Sure I'm disappointed in how this is going, but searching like this for carbon copy sites surely must disappoint us all, right?

FD watched this thread, so we really should address that disappointment or they'll assume this formula is a-ok, and I'm pretty sure none of us want that.

If it's a problem I can take that sorta talk elsewhere, but I thought some dialogue on it would be welcome.

*shrug*

Since it's been shown that moons rise and set relative to the circles on the ruins site getting the relationship between the moons ground track and the ruins on the existing sites will help us identify the particular relationship.

We can then use this offset on other systems with moons to identify a search path.

Basically we can get the great circle path of the moon
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_circle

Then offset it relative to the orbital direction and identify the small circle that runs parallel to it on the side that would result in it rising at the correct circle and setting at the other circle.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circle_of_a_sphere#/search

To facilitate that I've taken the liberty to create the following google sheet to gather the necessary latitude and longitude points in a given time. Using these I can identify the great circle paths between them and their points. And then offset those to get the parallel track for the ruins.

Once we gather this data for the existing sites we can better correlate the angle of the ruins to the moons so we can derive the proper angle and track on the other landable bodies with moons for a search for new sites.

I study and teach religion - I would certainly agree with the Guardians revering the moons. Another alternative is that the moons are used to bounce a signal off.

Well.... Time to read and think cause my initial idea of brute forcing this is kinda moot. Just for giggle checked how many permutations I can get out of 15 points on a straight line: 1,607,674,368,000 of course im not a pro at math so I could be mistaken bot im not trying that.

Okay so what are the original 13 records and where can I find them? I checked the spreadsheets for the original obelisks and there is only 11 records from them. or im blind.
According to the data:
C38 is Tablet + unkown and gives nothing
G19 is Casket + unkown and gives nothing

What is the data for:
H26 Urn + Casket
H34 Urn + Relic?
since I cant find that in the spreadsheets but its recorded as correct combinations?

Is this going to work for the system without (landable) moon'ed planets Synuefe XL-J D10-119? (It has binary pairs)

I rather assumed you meant you had blocked whoever was bugging you, and hence "who's mad?"[big grin]

i would assume since the binary pairs are close enough it would work? Im on one now and if i didnt know any better id say i had a moon orbiting my planet

Firstly, congratulations to Zorbaq for the find.

Secondly, the identical sites would seem to have pointed at the moon rise/set locations as a key to where other sites may be positioned. So now I need a class in calculating this. Thanks to AdmlAdama's post above I'll begin exploring how this could be done.

That's a good thought, too. I'll have to give planet A3 in the C22-17 system another good look. My instincts still tell me there's something there.

Blocking anyone in this thread would be counter productive to the cause, thus not something I will do. I am aware, however, that I sometimes rub people the wrong way.

Can't please everyone I suppose.

Has anyone checked if activating the beacons in one of the ruins has any remote effect on the other ruins?

Beacons reset when you leave one instance to goto the other.
so cant be done.
Remember only solo isnt bugged last we herd.

The problem with the layout being identical is that it makes all attempts to decode the layout of the ruins to guide us to others entirely pointless. That was a lot of puzzle solving effort wasted.

Plus a puzzle setting element wasted - the isometric projection theory was absolutely brilliant, but I fear much like the Shell being a time-telescope way beyond what's actually been conceived.

Love this hypothesis.

Careful, though - the nay-saying un-contributing members in this thread might not be able to read your easily readable diagram. They may also ask for proof for an hypothesis.

That's unnecessary - the problem was even you couldn't explain rationally your own diagram, nor were you willing to test it. Every cmdr that tested it found that it failed and you ignored it. THAT bit is the problem.

We all have theories - all we can ask of each other is that we tend them and care for them, not ignore their failings to avoid heading too far up the swanny. Rather than letting everything get negative let's learn from it and improve our processes

religion has no place in the real universe, I would be very disappointed if mr braben brought this bull in here

I hope this game will stick to feasible physics and chemistry else im gone

At Site 2, whenever I try to place all objects at one place - especially when a relic is involved - I get a crash "Failed to blabla transaction server". Anyone else gets this?

Another thing:
I'm still wondering about the commodity-description of the objects. For every item it describes that it had/has a certain purpose or at least it could have one. As a writer myself I know that such things only are mentioned if there is an actual purpose behind it. Otherwise it would be pointless and it would bemuse the reader (he would then think: well, where is the part of the story where this purpose comes up again?)

I'm currently at site 2, no one else here. Looks identical even down to the exact same obelisks being activated.

Moon is further away though but can be seen clearly above the ruins from where I am... also does not seem to be a moon that you can land on
